Overview of Open Source Codes to Assess Environmental Effects on Ocean Wave Farms

    Get PDF
The development of SNL-SWAN by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) allows users to investigate the interaction between a WEC or WEC array and the wave environment. SNL-SWAN when coupled with a hydrodynamic and sediment transport model such as Delft3D, developed by Deltares Inc, allows for the direct investigation of WEC array effects on the physical environment (e.g. waves, currents, seabed) and the associated site ecology. Ongoing development of these tools has shown how the coupling of SNL-SWAN with Delft3D-Flow can quantify the interaction between device(s) and the hydrodynamic environment at a real-world site

Session 1 Presentation - Use of Offshore Energy Facilities as Deepwater Ocean Observing Platforms

    Get PDF
Wave measurement is one of the major components for any ocean observation program, however, it is also the most challenging one due to its complexity. For Oil & Gas community, wave data is often used for platform stability calculation, operational decision making, structure fatigue analysis, and engineering design criteria

Session 2 Presentation - A New Generation of Spectral Wave Models

    Get PDF
Over the last decade, considerable effort has been spent on the evaluation of operational wave models such as the WAM, WAVEWATCH III, and SWAN thirdgeneration (3G) model. Most recent effort has focused on a “wholistic” approach to model evaluation, rather than on related comparisons directly to physics-based processes. In such an approach, model coefficients are tuned to maximize the global fit to integrated wave parameters such as wave height, mean/peak period, mean direction and directional spreading [1]. However, these coefficients do not ensure a universal “best-fit” to observation. Also, comparisons to spectra are omitted from the model evaluations since they tend to be generally poor [2]. Since overall spectral shape and its directional distribution are very important to modeling nearshore wave conditions, this can be critical to many coastal operations. In this paper, we will show a new approach to solutions which enables a fourth-generation (4G) model to run approximately an order of magnitude faster than thirdgeneration models and which provides improved estimates of swell arrival time and spectral shape for coastal area

Wing shape variation in the mimetic butterfly Papilio dardanus (Papilionidae) and its unpalatable nymphalid models

    Get PDF
Papilio dardanus displays female-limited polymorphic mimicry of multiple model species. Butterfly wing shape is species-specific and can influence mimetic signaling, but has not been characterized in this species. We used elliptical fourier analysis to investigate whether mimetic P. dardanus female forms have converged on the wing shape of their respective models. Although both models and mimics varied in forewing and hind wing shape, we found no evidence of forewing shape convergence between them. Overall, forewings did not differ in shape between sexes in P. dardanus, nor in four non-mimetic Papilio used for comparison. Similarly, there were no hind wing differences between the sexes in the four non-mimetic Papilio. However, P. dardanus hind wings varied significantly between mimetic females and non-mimetic individuals suggesting that, in addition to wing color pattern, the evolution of mimicry has led to changes in hind wing shape in P. dardanus

Parameter Estimation Technique for Models in PSS/E using Real-Time Data and Automation

    Get PDF
The purpose of this thesis is to use automation to create appropriate models in PSS/E with the data from Hardware-in-Loop real-time simulations. With the increase in technology of power electronics, the use of High Voltage Direct Current Technology and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System devices in the electrical power system have increased tremendously. Static Var Compensators are widely used and it is important to have accurate and reliable models for studies relating to power systems planning and interaction. An automation method is proposed to find the parameters of an SVC model in PSS/E with the data from the Hardware-in- loop real-time simulation of the SVC physical controller using Hypersim. The effect of the SVC on the system under steady state and fault conditions are analyzed with HIL simulation of an SVC physical controller in Hypersim and its corresponding model in PSS/E in the IEEE 14 bus system. The parameters of the SVC model in PSS/E can be effectively varied to bring its response closer to that of the response from HIL simulations in Hypersim. An error function is used as a measure to understand the extent of difference between the model and the physical controller

Mardi Gras Morning: A Family Affair

    No full text
Niya Zulu and her family are key figures in the New Orleans marching and parading culture. Niya’s father, Shaka Zulu, is Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas Tribe. He and Ziya’s mother Na’imah Zulu run the Golden Feather Mardi Gras Indian gallery and restaurant. At a young age Niya began touring with her family’s performing arts groups, learning the stilt dancing tradition, and photographing Mardi Gras Indian parades. Niya’s grandfather, Zohar Israel, is the second Chief of Northside Bone Gang, and she interviewed him to learn more about his masking experiences. Israel discusses Mardi Gras Indian traditions and songs, the origins of the Northside Skull and Bone Gang, the politics of urban space in Tremé, and the preservation of parading culture
