Ins & Outs: The St. Tammany Judicial System
April Curran tells her story of growing up in Mandeville, Louisiana and how she and her late sister, Joanna Curran, navigated the juvenile justice system. Curran describes her teenage years and how she and her circle of friends began selling and using opioids. Both Curran and her sister were arrested and pressed with drug charges at a young age, leading to harrowing and sometimes abusive interactions with the criminal justice system. Curran explains the circumstances of her sister’s overdose and how her family coped with this tragic loss. Drawing from these experiences, Curran analyzes the sociopolitical factors contributing to the opioid crisis and the dysfunction of the criminal justice system in Saint Tammany Parish
Ecocentric Watering System
Only three percent of all of the Earth’s water is naturally freshwater and the demand for freshwater is only increasing each year. The International Food Policy and Research Institute estimates that by the year 2025, farmers will actually struggle to meet the world’s growing food demands given that the ongoing freshwater depletion continues. This project addresses the issue of wasting water in irrigation by using moisture sensing technology along with a continuous weather data feed to optimize the output of water in gardening and farming. This ecocentric watering system will minimize the amount of water that is wasted in irrigation as opposed to watering systems that simply use timers or are manually operated. The main components in the design of the system are moisture sensors that are placed in soil, solenoid valves that control the flow of water to the soil, a flow meter that determines the amount of water the system uses, and a microcontroller with internet capability that is programmed to operate the system. At this time, the construction of the prototype of the system is underway and will soon be able to demonstrate preliminary operation
Daily Life at Crystal City Internment Camp 1942-1945
Throughout World War II, the belligerent countries took enemy civilians, as well as soldiers, prisoner. The majority of the camps created to hold these prisoners were located in the European and Asian theaters of battle, but the United States operated prisoner of war camps and civilian internment camps as well. American internment camps, administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), imprisoned persons from the Axis countries of Japan, Italy, and Germany, deemed a threat to national security and categorized as a group as “enemy aliens.” Generally, these individuals were not threats, and a sizable number were legal U.S. citizens.
Crystal City Internment Camp, located in Crystal City, Texas, interned individuals from all three enemy national backgrounds and allowed entire families to reside with the arrested family member. This research will attempt to highlight the daily experience of the internees in the Crystal City Internment Camp through internees’ oral histories and official camp reports, with a focus specifically on the German prisoners. Although scholars have examined these internment camps, little attention has been given to daily life in these camps
Simulation and Performance Evaluation of Algorithms for Unmanned Aircraft Conflict Detection and Resolution
The problem of aircraft conflict detection and resolution (CDR) in uncertainty is addressed in this thesis. The main goal in CDR is to provide safety for the aircraft while minimizing their fuel consumption and flight delays. In reality, a high degree of uncertainty can exist in certain aircraft-aircraft encounters especially in cases where aircraft do not have the capabilities to communicate with each other. Through the use of a probabilistic approach and a multiple model (MM) trajectory information processing framework, this uncertainty can be effectively handled. For conflict detection, a randomized Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm is used to accurately detect conflicts, and, if a conflict is detected, a conflict resolution algorithm is run that utilizes a sequential list Viterbi algorithm. This thesis presents the MM CDR method and a comprehensive MC simulation and performance evaluation study that demonstrates its capabilities and efficiency
“The Grand Old Man of Cotton”: Colonel Henry G. Hester, Economic Innovation, and the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, 1871-1932
After the American Civil War, and the collapse of the market in slave-produced cotton in the South, cotton merchants in New Orleans faced challenges in re-establishing the city as a central port for Southern cotton. As commodities exchanges emerged as centralized spaces for business in the 1870s, a new class of experts emerged, upon whose reports traders bought and sold newly developed securities derivatives. Henry G. Hester (1846- 1934), Secretary of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, was an integral player in the development of the methods that governed sophisticated commodities trading around the world. His career at the New Orleans Cotton Exchange tells the story of the arrival of these methods and subsequent downfall of Euro-American centrality in the global cotton empire and contradicts previous histories that deemphasize Southern businesspersons’ contributions to modernization

Working Memory Impairments in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: The Roles of Anxiety and Stress Physiology
Stress and anxiety negatively impact the working memory system by competing for executive resources. Broad memory deficits have been reported in individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS). We investigated anxiety and physiological stress reactivity in relation to visuospatial working memory impairments in 20 children with 22q11.2DS and 32 typically developing children (M = 11.10 years, SD = 2.95). Results indicate reduced post-stress RSA recovery and overall increased levels of cortisol in children with 22q11.2DS. Additionally, anxiety mediated the relationship between 22q11.2DS and visuospatial working memory impairment. However, there was no indication that stress response physiology mediated this association. Results suggest that anxiety exacerbates impaired working memory in children with 22q11.2DS. Thus, treatment and intervention methods for children with 22q11.2DS should address anxiety related symptomology
