Growth laws for sub-delta crevasses in the Mississippi River Delta: observations and modeling

    Get PDF
In this study we assessed growth laws of sub-delta crevasses in the Mississippi River delta plain, experimental laboratory deltas, and compared them to previously studied river dominated large deltas worldwide. Metrics for channel and delta geometry for each system were obtained using a combination of geospatial tools, bathymetric datasets, sediment size, and hydrodynamic observations. Most crevasses and experimental deltas appear to obey delta growth laws suggesting that they exhibit planform metrics similar to larger deltas. However, some channels within each system, exhibit outlier behavior (e.g. asymmetric growth) where channel length is much larger than channel width. Hydrodynamic observations and morphodynamic modeling results, support the role of confinement in governing this response, through direct lateral confinement of the receiving basin width and depth thus guiding channels, and indirect confinement caused by sediment cohesion, whereby natural levees guide the systems asymmetric channel growth

Playing His Own Game: Ernest \u27Dutch\u27 Morial\u27s 1977 Mayoral Campaign for Citizen Participation in New Orleans

    Get PDF
Ernest “Dutch” Morial’s 1977 grassroots mayoral campaign disrupted the political status quo in New Orleans with his message of citizen participation. Morial’s citizen-driven campaign reached over the constituencies of established Black Political Organizations, capturing an eager audience with his message of political, social, and economic equality. With the help of volunteers and other community organizations, Morial created a grassroots campaign that focused on making city government more inclusive. Unattached to the traditional patronage structure, Mayor Morial empowered the black community, reducing the constraints of their political access. Although his legacy is difficult to discern in New Orleans current political realities, Morial’s first campaign and administrations represent a departure from the political status-quo and the powerful patronage structures critical to their status

On The Ramberg-Osgood Stress-Strain Model And Large Deformations of Cantilever Beams

    Get PDF
In this thesis the Ramberg-Osgood nonlinear model for describing the behavior of many different materials is investigated. A brief overview of the model as it is currently used in the literature is undertaken and several misunderstandings and possible pitfalls in its application is pointed out, especially as it pertains to more recent approaches to finding solutions involving the model. There is an investigation of the displacement of a cantilever beam under a combined loading consisting of a distributed load across the entire length of the beam and a point load at its end and new solutions to this problem are provided with a mixture of numerical techniques, which suggest strong mathematical consistency within the model for all theoretical assumptions made. A physical experiment was undertaken and the results prove to be inaccurate when using parameters derived from tensile tests, but when back calculating parameters from the beam test the model has a 14.40% error at its extreme against the experimental data suggesting the necessity for further testing

Automatic Forensic Analysis of PCCC Network Traffic Log

Most SCADA devices have a few built-in self-defence mechanisms and tend to implicitly trust communications received over the network. Therefore, monitoring and forensic analysis of network traffic is a critical prerequisite for building an effective defense around SCADA units. In this thesis work, We provide a comprehensive forensic analysis of network traffic generated by the PCCC(Programmable Controller Communication Commands) protocol and present a prototype tool capable of extracting both updates to programmable logic and crucial configuration information. The results of our analysis shows that more than 30 files are transferred to/from the PLC when downloading/uplloading a ladder logic program using RSLogix programming software including configuration and data files. Interestingly, when RSLogix compiles a ladder-logic program, it does not create any lo-level representation of a ladder-logic file. However the low-level ladder logic is present and can be extracted from the network traffic log using our prototype tool. the tool extracts SMTP configuration from the network log and parses it to obtain email addresses, username and password. The network log contains password in plain text

Navigating the Moral Pitfalls of the Service Industry The Book of Snake

    Get PDF
This thesis paper examines how I turned real life experiences and observations into a fictionalized screenplay that explores the potential for vice inherent in tip-based service industry jobs. After that, I move on to the preproduction process and touch on casting, location scouting, visualization, production design, budgeting and crewing. Next I discuss how the preproduction and on-set efforts of individuals were all critical to our production. Then I chronicle the ups and downs of postproduction. Finally, I conclude with an admittedly subjective analysis of the effectiveness of the movie itself

Separation of Vocal and Non-Vocal Components from Audio Clip Using Correlated Repeated Mask (CRM)

    Get PDF
Extraction of singing voice from music is one of the ongoing research topics in the field of speech recognition and audio analysis. In particular, this topic finds many applications in the music field, such as in determining music structure, lyrics recognition, and singer recognition. Although many studies have been conducted for the separation of voice from the background, there has been less study on singing voice in particular. In this study, efforts were made to design a new methodology to improve the separation of vocal and non-vocal components in audio clips using REPET [14]. In the newly designed method, we tried to rectify the issues encountered in the REPET method, while designing an improved repeating mask which is used to extract the non-vocal component in audio. The main reason why the REPET method was preferred over previous methods for this study is its independent nature. More specifically, the majority of existing methods for the separation of singing voice from music were constructed explicitly based on one or more assumptions

    Zig Zag Wanderer

Narratives recollected from popular sources such as podcast and websites often inspire my animations, paintings, and drawings. My work serves as a pictorial manifestation of everything from visualized passages in literature to eavesdropping. I zigzag from one source to another, combining found images that are loosely associated with one another. I combine them in a simulated collage in order to form an interesting composition. My purpose is to create a magical moment that pulls us away from the monotony of life. Storytelling not only allows one to see oneself and how one relates to others, but it also can provide a way for a person to cope with the unpredictable nature of existence. I am hoping that my art will provide opportunities for the viewer to expand his/her own unique personal narrative
