Living in Two Worlds: The Phenomena of the Language Immersion Experience
As Vygotsky (1986) concludes in his seminal work Thought and Language, “A word relates to consciousness as a living cell relates to a whole organism, as an atom relates to the universe. A word is a microcosm of human consciousness” (p. 246). Even without an in-depth understanding of science and only the most popular appreciation of the police procedural be it Sherlock Holmes or CSI, it is easy to see how a single cell can relate to the whole organism. But how can a word be a microcosm of human consciousness? The purpose of this study was to explore exactly that: premise, whether words reflect the lived experience of not only a person, but of a group of people, by documenting the lived experience of children in the phenomena of foreign language immersion in school (FLIIS). Using corpus linguistic techniques to analyze the nature of these children’s lexical development as well as the relationship of the perceptions of their fluency on their second language (L2) production, this study found that in order to understand the essence of what it means for a child to express him/herself fluently in his/her L2, one must understand how language functions as a transparent medium for these children and shift one’s thinking from an additive idea of language (L1, L2, L3) to the idea of interlingual consciousness
“More Human Than Human”: Lacan’s Mirror Stage Theory and Posthumanism in Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
In my thesis, Philip K. Dick\u27s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is examined using French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan\u27s mirror stage theory. In the novel, humans have built androids that are almost indistinguishable from humans except that they lack a sense of empathy, or so the humans believe. The Voigt-Kampff Machine is a polygraph-like device used to determine if a subject shows signs of empathy in order to confirm if one is an android or a human. Yet, should empathy be the defining quality of determining humanity?
In his article The mirror stage as formative of the function of the ‘I’ as revealed in psychoanalytic experience, Lacan refers to a particular critical milestone in an infant\u27s psychological development. When the baby looks in a mirror, they come to the realization that the image they are seeing is not just any ordinary image; it is actually themselves in the mirror. This a-ha moment of self-realization is what Lacan\u27s Mirror Stage Theory is based on. According to Lacan\u27s theory, the image that the child sees in a mirror becomes an Other through which they will always scrutinize and pass judgment on, for it is not how they have pictured themselves to be in their mind’s eye.
I hypothesize that the androids are humans\u27 artificial and technological Other. It is my thought that Dick uses the conflict of determining the biological from the artificial, the effort to differentiate humans from androids and biological animals from artificial ones, to illustrate Lacan\u27s psychoanalysis of the mirror stage and its importance in our continual search for determining what humanity is and who we really are
Using Digital Mapping Techniques to Rapidly Document Vulnerable Historical Landscapes in Coastal Louisiana: Holt Cemetery Case Study
This thesis outlines a technique for rapid documentation of historic sites in volatile cultural landscapes. Using Holt Cemetery as an exemplary case study, a workflow was developed incorporating RTK terrain survey, UAS aerial imagery, photogrammetry, GIS, and smartphone data collection in order to create a multifaceted database of the material and spatial conditions, as well as the patterns of use, that exist at the cemetery.
The purpose of this research is to create a framework for improving the speed of data creation and increasing the accessibility of information regarding threatened cultural resources. It is intended that these processes can be scaled and adapted for use at any site, and that the products generated can be utilized by researchers, resource management professionals, and preservationists. In utilizing expedited methods, this thesis specifically advocates for documentation of sites that exist in coastal environments and are facing imminent destruction due to environmental degradation
Post-Katrina Retention of Law Enforcement Officers: A Case Study of the New Orleans Police Department
This dissertation is a case study of the New Orleans Police Department and identified factors that affected the retention of law enforcement officers post-Hurricane Katrina. The NOPD was chosen because the agency was an extreme case and experienced the unprecedented separation of over 300 officers during and post- Hurricane Katrina. The variables examined included tenure, age, salary, education, and job satisfaction, as well as, race, sex, marital status, and New Orleans residency.
This research is significant because in a time of decreasing budgets and increased cost to replace employees, where skills are scarce and knowledge is important, recruitment is costly, and it takes time to fill vacancies, turnover can be problematic (Loquercio, 2006). Hurricane Katrina was an unprecedented catastrophic disaster unlike any event experienced by a local police department. The impact accelerated the attrition of New Orleans Police Department officers at a time when the agency and community needed them the most. In addition to normal retention challenges experienced by law enforcement, post-Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Police Department experienced separation of almost a fourth of its agency post-Hurricane Katrina. This was very problematic and forced the department to operate severely short-staffed at a time when the department was trying to provide essential services to the community and recover from the storm’s affect at the same time. This dissertation explored some of the causes of attrition, examined the attrition of the NOPD pre-and post-Hurricane Katrina, and reasons most officers stayed. It was important to identify lessons learned from an agency and officers who experienced a disaster and unprecedented attrition of officers first hand. The consequences of such significant attrition will take years to overcome, especially in light of the New Orleans Police Department’s pre-and post-Hurricane Katrina recruitment and retention challenges
March 22, 2018 Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Election Survey
A survey of 617 randomly selected Jefferson Parish registered voters was conducted March 18-20, 2018 by the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center on the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s race scheduled for March 24, 2018. Survey respondents were asked in an interactive voice response telephone survey (IVR)1 who they preferred in the upcoming sheriff’s race. This survey of 617 randomly selected respondents yields a margin of error of +/- 3.9% at a confidence level of 95%.
The findings from the current poll are compared with the results from a poll conducted on March 4-5, 2018 of 767 randomly selected Jefferson Parish registered voters that inquired into who respondents supported in the sheriff’s election. The sample size from the early March study yields a margin of error of +/- 3.5% at a 95% confidence rate.
We also simulate what the poll results would look like if we employed the turnout patterns from the October 2015 election in Jefferson Parish. While that election is not exact copy of the current one, they are similar enough in nature to make a reasonable comparison. Although the October 2015 ballot contained statewide contests, it is comparable to the current election in that it featured a parish-wide election for sheriff. In addition, there were 13,393 early voters in the October 2015 election while the March 2018 election saw 13,496 parish residents cast an early ballot
2018 Statewide Survey on President Donald Trump versus Oprah Winfrey
The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center conducted an interactive voice response (IVR) telephone survey on January 11, 2018 on the topic of candidate choice in a hypothetical match-up between President Donald Trump and Oprah Winfrey. Survey respondents were randomly selected from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s registered voter file. The sample of 722 respondents yields a margin of error of 3.7% with 95% confidence
Leveraging Relocations in ELF-binaries for Linux Kernel Version Identification
In this paper, we present a working research prototype codeid-elf for ELF binaries based on its Windows counterpart codeid, which can identify kernels through relocation entries extracted from the binaries. We show that relocation-based signatures are unique and distinct and thus, can be used to accurately determine Linux kernel versions and derandomize the base address of the kernel in memory (when kernel Address Space Layout Randomization is enabled). We evaluate the effectiveness of codeid-elf on a subset of Linux kernels and find that the relocations in kernel code have nearly 100\% code coverage and low similarity (uniqueness) across various kernels. Finally, we show that codeid-elf, which leverages relocations in kernel code, can detect all kernel versions in the test set with almost 100% page hit rate and nearly zero false negatives
Performance Optimization of the Differential Protection Schemes
Current differential protection principle is superior in terms of sensitivity and speed of operation in comparison with other protection principle used in power systems. From the last five decades, various current differential protection schemes are widely used to protect busbars, transformers, and short-transmission lines. The deployment of high capacity microwave and optical fiber technologies redefined
the line protection systems by facilitating the use of current differential protection schemes for long transmission lines. The common application issue of these schemes is mis-operation due to current transformer (CT) saturation during close-in external faults. Moreover, transformer differential protection schemes face mis-trip due to inrush current during energization. The techniques presented in the literature to address those issues, de-sensitize protection function and increase the time of operation. A comprehensive fault discrimination algorithm and an inrush current detection algorithm are highly demanded for current differential protection schemes. The purpose of this dissertation is to optimize the performance of differential schemes applied to protect busbar, transformer and line. This research derives the mathematical model of saturated secondary current of CT and introduces the concept of Partial Operating Current (POC). Based on these mathematical developments, the characteristics of POC are identified for all three types of differential zones like busbar, transformer and line protection. A new inrush current blocking algorithm is developed for transformer differential protection. A new time-domain CT saturation detection algorithm is also proposed. Based on these new developments, three separate differential schemes are designed for busbar, transformer, and line protection, respectively. The proposed schemes provide complete immunity against the mis-operations due to CT saturation during close-in external faults and transformer inrush current without sacrificing the sensitivity for internal faults. The speed of operation is also improved. The model for each scheme is built in Matlab platform and the performance is validated using the test system simulated in Electro-Magnetic Transient Program (EMTP) for all possible fault scenarios. Mathematical Literacy and the Secondary Student
Public education is a continually evolving field, with new research, policies, and practices explored by professionals who are driven to provide America’s youth with high-quality education. Research literature since 2000 has highlighted the importance of disciplinary literacy and its unfortunate neglect in a majority of secondary classrooms (Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Students who are literate in a particular discipline, such as math, view themselves as fluent in the language of mathematics, comfortable with reading, discussing, and practicing complex mathematical concepts while using appropriate vocabulary (Buehl, 2017). As seasoned professionals and novice educators consider the role of disciplinary literacy in their own classrooms, it is necessary to ponder the practices that are implemented within classrooms. Do they align with current research on the matter? What role do motivation and culture play in the process of becoming mathematically literate? How do these ideas influence classroom literacy practices? These are the central questions that have guided the construction of this research study, which will seek to examine the phenomena that occur within a classroom as teachers implement practices which promote and teach mathematical literacy. The exploratory nature of this study dictates that no judgement on the effectiveness of observed and discussed instructional strategies is considered, rather, a comparison of the latter with those strategies recommended by current educational researchers and literature. Interviews and classroom observations will work in tandem with a review of the current publications that address the areas of motivation, mathematical literacy, and culture
