    Increased Healthspan from Exercise

    Get PDF
In this talk we discuss important factors for increased healthspan. Much of the discussion will focus on strength training and cardiovascular training. In particular we outline optimal ways to increase strength and VO2 max, which are the largest contributors to increased healthspan. We will also explain what makes a strength training program “optimal” mathematically

The Effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences on the Self-Esteem of College Students

    Get PDF
Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to predict negative health and mental health effects later in life. One in two Americans has experienced at least one ACE. This issue is prevalent across class, race, and ethnicity. However, little is known about ACEs and the young adult population. Methods A survey was conducted to measure ACEs and self-esteem in fifty college students. The hypothesis was a negative correlation between ACE and self-esteem scores. Results A small negative correlation was found between ACEs and self-esteem in college students. The average ACE score was 3.9 and the average self-esteem score was 16.78. A one-tailed Pearson correlation coefficient test was run. A significant correlation was not found between ACE score and self-esteem, r(48) = -0.23, p = 0.06. Therefore, the hypothesis is not supported because not enough evidence was found to do so. Conclusions A trend in the data showed a small negative correlation between ACEs and self-esteem in college students. Although the findings in this study were not statistically significant, this does not mean that ACEs do not have an impact on self-esteem. This study lacked the power to detect it

Comparing Pollinator Communities: ONU’s Swanberg Sanctuary v. Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

    Get PDF
Pollinators play a key role in both ecosystem diversity and agricultural productivity [1]. Declines for pollinators have been seen across the globe and have been linked to agriculture and urbanization [2]. Several species in Illinois have declined so severely, they are now endangered or of significant conservation concern [1]. Past ONU students have collected data on the bees in Northeast IL. However, there is no data for what species are at the Sanctuary. This study will provide baseline data for future studies and by comparing with Midewin, a mature restoration, we can gain an understanding of distinctiveness

Shang Yang and Skirmishes: Warfare and Philosophy in Warring States China

    Get PDF
Ancient history is often complex. The 21st century is so far removed from the epoch that not only is understanding the sources a problem, but so is the quantity and quality of the sources themselves. However, what we have along with the archaeology is enough to determine at least some historicity of the epoch. Other questions are raised, however, when one starts to examine ancient history. For instance, what caused the philosophical upheaval during the political and social upheaval called the Warring States period in China? During this period in ancient China, when the states were in a struggle to determine which would come out on top, Chinese philosophy experienced a sudden boom. This link between warfare and philosophy in Warring States China was politics

The Relationship Between Food Prices, Disposable Income, Perceived Impact of Inflation, and Nutrition Education in Guiding University Students’ Food Choices

    No full text
This is a Masters thesis defense presentation. Learning Outcome: Recognize the need for nutrition education to include nutritional density as it relates to increasing food prices, disposable income, and the perceived impact of inflation on student food choices. Nutrition education allows for the efficient use of resources while purchasing nutrient-dense foods during current economic conditions. Introduction: Food prices jumped 11.4% in 2022 and an additional 3.6% in 2023. Nutritional knowledge and relationships between food prices and perceived impact of inflation on food choices/purchases determines the need for nutrition education relating to food choice and affordability. Methods: Researcher recruited 16,500 students from two Midwestern universities reflecting diverse economic backgrounds for this online quantitative design. Kliemann’s General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire and Mathew’s Food Choice Priorities Survey, both validated for university students were used with four questions addressing inflationary factors. Permission for adaptation was granted. Data Analysis: Correlation matrices and independent samples t-tests were used from 350 usable questionnaires. Results: Basic nutrition class completion reported a higher mean score (M = 13.7/20, SD = 2.51) for general nutrition knowledge than those who did not (M = 12.8/20, SD = 2.84). The median disposable income at the public university was higher (Mdn = 2,000)thanattheprivateuniversity(Mdn=2,000) than at the private university (Mdn = 650). Statistically significant correlations were found between products purchased based on price (p = rs = -.127, p = .025). Likert scale answers indicated inflation impacts food choices/purchases (M = 3.70, Mdn = 4.00), for affordable foods over desired foods (M = 3.48, Mdn = 4.00). Discussion/Conclusion: Food price is important when making choices. The higher mean score of students who completed a nutrition course indicate the value of applicable knowledge. Nutrition education should specialize in supporting nutritionally sound choices and budgeting based on disposable income and the inflationary effects of food prices. Funding Disclosure: Non

The Protective Effects of Anthocyanins on Neurons

    No full text
Background Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are debilitating neurodegenerative diseases that are largely thought to be exacerbated, and perhaps even caused by oxidative stress in and around neurons. Green tea is known to contain various nutrients that reduce oxidative stress. Anthocyanins are group of nutrients that are found in plants that have red, purple, or black fruit. They have been shown to directly reduce oxidative stress and may also affect the activity of enzymes such as catalase that reduce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can be simulated by LPS and D-galactose (DG), sugars that are commonly found on pathogens. SH-SY5Y cells are neuronal stem cells that are widely used in in vitro neuronal models. Methods SH-SY5Y cells were differentiated using all trans retinoic acid over a span of 8 days. Differentiated SH-SY5Y cells were pretreated with green tea extract (GTE), tart cherry extract (WTC), elderberry extract (ELE), or coffee berry extract (CBE) or with GTE and WTC, ELE, or CBE. Each plate contained positive, negative, and GTE controls. After 24 hours of pretreatment, half of the cells were treated with either LPS or D-galactose (DG). LPS treatment lasted for 12 hours, while DG treatment lasted for 72 hours. After treatment, cells were lysed using a hypotonic lysis buffer3. Lysate were then used in spectroscopy assays measuring catalase activity and protein concentration. Results DG-treated cells that were pretreated with only GTE or WTC had significantly higher catalase activity than those that were stressed with DG without any extract pretreatment. DG-treated cells that were pretreated with both CBE and GTE had significantly lower catalase activity than those that were pretreated with GTE alone. Unstressed cells that were pretreated with elderberry had significantly lower catalase activity levels than those that were not pretreated. WTC, ELE, and CBE do not appear to have synergistic neuroprotective effects with GTE through the upregulation of catalase
