CULTURAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS: Perceptions of Community Resident and Police Personnel
No full textThis study examined the difference in self-reported perceptions of cultural diversity awareness between two specific groups, community residents and police personnel, within a Midwestern city’s community and police department. This study also measured how their attitudes related to their likelihood to assist in enhancing the goals of community policing, which includes the prevention of crime. Literature cited demonstrates that social injustice toward African Americans and Latinos, cultural diversity ignorance, miscommunication, and lack of trust between community residents and police personnel are indicators that their relationships require positive solutions toward repairing a historically strained relationship. The Miami University Diversity Awareness Scale and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale were utilized to measure cultural diversity and intercultural sensitivity which was the focus of possible resolutions. Using an Independent t-Test analysis, there was no significant difference in the perception of cultural diversity awareness between the thirty-one community residents and forty-three police personnel. Intercultural sensitivity was positively correlated with cultural diversity awareness. Notably, using a Spearman Rho analysis, results indicated that cultural diversity awareness positively correlated with self-reported responses from the two specific groups which further provide law enforcement and community residents with material for discussion which can enhance transparency and provide a systematic way of reducing crime and disorder; adding to a collective acceptance in a multicultural society
Intersecting Social Work Practice, Education, and Spirituality: A Conceptual Model
No full textThe relationship between spirituality, social work, and social work education is complicated and often difficult to teach. Though social work has significant religious roots, it distanced itself at the turn of the 20th century in pursuit of professionalism and scientific respectability. Today the NASW and the CSWE recognize spirituality and religion as aspects of client diversity; however, few strategies exist for integrating this content into social work curriculum. This paper offers a conceptual framework for understanding the spirituality-social work relationship based on person-in-environment. Educators can use this framework as a tool for integrating spirituality content across core social work courses
The Impact of Police Officer Age on Leadership and Workplace Preferences
No full textPolice departments are experiencing low levels of police applicants and high turnover rates due to the current climate of policing and internal and external stressors. Police department management desires to be proficient in recruiting and managing police officers of different generations who may have varying desires and needs. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of generational differences on police officer leadership and workplace preferences in order to make recommendations to police department management about how to better engage, manage, recruit and retain police officers of different generations. The current study employed a quantitative design that examined 160 (n = 160) police officers’ responses about leadership, trust in management, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. A survey was created using a combination of four survey instruments and delivered via email to police officers employed in a suburban county. Data analysis included analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for race and gender. Statistical significance was found between police officer age and demand reconciliation in leadership (p = .049). Statistical significance was found between the age of police officer and trust in management, with older police officers found to be more trusting (p = .037). Statistical significance was found between intrinsic (p = .000), extrinsic (p = .000), and general job satisfaction (p = .000) and organizational commitment across all ages of police officers. Older police officers reported having greater organizational commitment than younger officers. Police departments may desire to consider that different generations of police officers may require different opportunities, motivation, and leadership in order to keep them satisfied in their jobs and create lifelong careers at the same police department
Attitudes and Practices of Social Workers Toward the LGBTQ Community
No full textSocial workers have a unique opportunity to serve people by meeting basic human needs, combating oppression and marginalization, and advocating for social justice. The purpose of this correlational, quantitative study was to measure the relationship between attitudes and practices among social workers toward the LGBTQ community with a specific examination of the religiosity of social workers, in order to assess if a social worker provides appropriate, inclusive services, regardless of their attitude toward this community. 2,828 social workers were asked to complete a 42 question researcher-created survey, Social Workers Attitudes and Practices Assessment, assessing their attitudes and practices toward the LGBTQ Community. The participant size was 116 (n = 116). Social workers were found to have affirming attitudes (M = 1.90) and provide inclusive practices (M = 1.93) toward the LGBTQ community. In addition, utilizing a multiple regression analysis, religiosity correlates to social workers’ attitudes and practices toward the LGBTQ community: organized religious activity (ORA) (p \u3c .001), non-organized religious activity (NORA) (p = .01) and intrinsic religiosity (IR) (p \u3c .01) are each statistically significant predictors of one’s attitude and ORA (p = .03) and IR (p = .001) are statistically significant predictors of one’s practices. Attitude is a statistically significant predictor of practice toward the LGBTQ community (p \u3c .001). The results of this study provide a point-in-time count and framework for future research to study the evolution of social workers’ religiosity, as well as their attitudes and practices toward the LGBTQ community
Basic Utilities Vehicle (BUV) Milk Transportation
Get PDFIn developing countries, a need exists for the transportation of raw foods to communities without spoilage. Traditional methods of transporting goods don’t meet the needs of the consumer, and often times food is wasted due to the harsh climate and time constraints. Food often becomes salvage under the heat, causing a hurt to the profitability of vendors and family needs for fresh produce. In particular milk transportation has become difficult, due to the lack of cold storage in standard transit. As a response to the need for affordable raw food transport, our sponsor Basic Utilities Vehicle (BUV) has tasked us with designing a vehicle bed, for their existing vehicle models, that will withstand the harsh terrain and humid tropical environment during transit. Our job is to create an affordable unit that will transport milk containers unspoiled, without sacrificing storage space for sturdier bulky goods. Our vehicle bed design will replace the pre-existing 6.5’X4’ wooded box bed with a design that will keep cool over a 4-hour transit time, with extra space for vehicle repair tools, and overhead space for other various goods. This design will allow for the transport of raw goods, without sacrificing space for other cargo

Whose Community? Market Economics and the Concept of Solidarity
Get PDFThe debate over the relationship between market processes and community values has intensified in recent years, due to the pace of economic change, as well as the respective impacts of the global financial crisis and the pandemic. This essay explores various conceptions of community, raising the question of whether or not a genuine sense of social solidarity requires that those who participate in those interactions live in physical proximity to one another. The implications of this discussion for economic policy are also examined, including the possibility that the composition of what has been historically regarded as “conservative” economics might be altered in a way that would be designed to benefit communities that are defined in local or national terms. Given the negative economic consequences of those actions that might be characterized as “building walls,” attention is devoted to potential policies that are intended to “build bridges” to the future for those who have been dislocated by new patterns of market activity. These explorations seek to advance the goal of assisting certain definitions of community without assuming that they have a higher moral standing than other conceptions of social solidarity, while also avoiding the conclusion that existing jobs and industries are more important than those which have not yet come into existence

As a result of this increased awareness of the spirit world, contro- versial trends and strategies have begun to emerge in evangelistic efforts.
