Hesed: Discovering Redeeming Brokenness in a Retelling of the Biblical Story of Ruth
Get PDFThrough the powerful interaction between the visual arts and music, an ancient story of brokenness and redemption is told. This thesis seeks to give greater insight into this multimedia retelling of the biblical book of Ruth. Scholarly sources were reviewed to deepen understanding, and works from professional visual artists and musicians were examined for this project to come together. The end product is this thesis paper as well as a body of art and a five-movement piece of music. This combination of visual art and music allows the relevance of the biblical book of Ruth to be seen in the transforming journey of a grieving woman and her daughter
Quality of Life Disparities For The Rural Economically Disadvantaged
Get PDFFamilies who reside in rural communities and live in poverty often experience a lack of quality of life supports, which impacts their mental health and exasperates any special needs they may have. Research in regards to these concerns, has historically focused on southern states and or the impacts of poverty in urban settings. This phenomenological qualitative research study reveals quality of life supports that impoverished families living in rural communities in central Illinois often do without. This study further examines the families’ perceived barriers to those supports. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What quality-of-life supports (employment, food assistance, mental health services, special education) do impoverished families living in rural central Illinois believe they lack? (2) What do rural families identify as perceived barriers to receiving quality-of-life supports? (3) How are rural families impacted by lack of access to quality-of-life supports? (4) How are the children in rural families impacted by lack of access to quality-of-life supports? Data analysis of interviews and questionnaire responses from eight families living in rural communities in central Illinois explained a need for mental and physical health supports, food assistance, quality special education services, and local employment opportunities. In turn, the research yielded the following barriers to these supports: lack of transportation services, community resources (including food banks and service agencies), stigma, specialized educational programming/training, and acceptance of state funded insurance. Recommendations for further research include, longer, longitudinal study, larger interview pool, and children specific interviews

In the years between these two men, the world between Luther and Wesley, Europe experienced cascading, bloody, and tumultuous religious transformations as Christendom split into rival expressions of belief.
This podcast explores the nuances, cultures, beliefs, structures, and conflicts of this central period in the history of Christianity and European society. It features and is produced by the faculty and students at Olivet Nazarene University. More remarkable, few organizations last so long as Olivet. Since the 1950s, nearly 9 of 10 Fortune 500 companies are … gone! But this month, we welcome students for a 114th consecutive year. Not even the most severe challenges have interrupted our service to students over the years — not near bankruptcy in our beginnings, fire, tornado, nor COVID.
So tonight, nestle in. Remember God’s faithfulness to Olivet, and our fidelity to her great cause. The world still needs Olivet — and you!
