Are We Blessing Our Communities? A Study on Nazarene Churches and Community Wellbeing.
The idea of blessing one’s community is not new to the Nazarene denomination. However, to date, there has been little research conducted on Nazarene churches and community well-being. Partnering with the Church of the Nazarene, our research team is surveying approximately 680 Nazarene pastors/churches in the Central USA region and conducting interviews with a smaller subset of pastors and church leaders to assess how Nazarene churches are currently working toward the well-being of their communities. We use a web-based survey and semi-structured telephone interviews to gather data. Findings are intended to give the Church of the Nazarene a better understanding of how they are currently blessing their communities and how they can possibly improve. Lastly, we finish by identifying areas that may require more research on Nazarene churches\u27 involvement with their respective communities
Child Development Degree Program: Careers Spotlight & Panel Discussion
Join session via Microsoft Teams.
The Child Development program within the School of Education has continued to grow and strengthen its identity over the recent years. Students currently seek diverse career paths working with children and families following completion and graduation from the B.S. Child Development program. A group of undergraduate students from the spring 2024 CDEV 490 Senior Seminar will facilitate a discussion with a panel of helping professionals connected to the Child Development degree program. The panel discussion will give spotlight to the variety of career paths the degree prepares individuals for and will include both ONU Child Development alumni and professionals connected to the field
Scaling and Optimizing Agitated Tanks for the Homogenization of Complex Biological Suspensions
This study presents an investigation of the agitated tank mixing dynamics across various scales, including lab, two pilot, and full scales, focusing on human blood plasma Kistler-Nitschmann-Cohn (KNC) I+II+III suspensions. The methods employed are empirical tank mixing correlations within the KaeMix software package and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling using ANSYS Fluent. Tank and agitator geometries were generated in ANSYS Workbench and meshed in ANSYS Fluent with varied cell sizes to capture detailed dynamics near the agitators and in the bulk fluid. Kaemix analysis provided rapid computation of bulk mixing times at different scales. Beyond simulations, the project aims to establish set points for pilot-scale and small-scale mixing vessels, ensuring conditions closely resemble full-scale manufacturing
Efficient, Affordable, and Accessible (EAA) House Design
Recent trends in the housing market, along with household income disparities, underscore the need for efficient, affordable, and accessible (EAA) housing for middle to lower-middle-income families. The EAA House Design project presents an alternative solution through a detailed set of construction documents encompassing architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural, plumbing, and interior design. Revit software was used to plan, design, and manage the project. The completed project will be submitted for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Engineering Education Award
AISC Structural Steel Bridge Competition
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) hosts an annual competition in which students compete to design and fabricate a structural steel bridge. This year, four senior civil engineering majors are representing Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) to fulfill their capstone project requirement for the engineering department. The purpose of this project is to develop relationships between students and professionals while acquiring critical thinking skills. Through sponsor engagement, ONU’s team has developed a 3 ft-wide bridge that spans 20 ft and successfully holds up to 2,500 lbs of live load and 50 lbs of lateral load. The steel bridge is fabricated utilizing two Pratt truss systems, 2” x 2” x 1/8” angle and 2” x 1/8” flat plate A36 steel, X-bracing, and simple pin connections between members. The regional competition will be held April 4-6, 2024 in Chicago with 17 universities represented
From Proposal to Implementation: The Founding of the Center for Faith and Family
This panel will discuss the process involved in the formation of the Center for Faith and Family at Olivet. The concept of the Center originated in Spring of 2022 when Lilly Endowment invited Olivet to submit a grant proposal. The purpose of the grant was to establish a unique approach to providing resources that assist parents and caregivers to pass their faith to their children. In this panel discussion, the presenters will discuss the process of submitting the grant proposal, the steps taken to research and launch the Center, and the current initiatives of the Center
The Effect of Masks on Allergic Rhinitis SymptomsRelated to Ragweed and its Influence on College Students
Background This study explored the effect of masks on allergic rhinitis related to ragweed. Research shows surgical and KN95 masks reduce nasal symptoms arising from dust, pollen, and ragweed. Other studies have contradictory findings about the effect of masks on ocular symptoms. Very few studies have examined the effect of masks on early and late allergic rhinitis. Methods This qualitative study involved thirty college students aged 18 to 25 from Olivet Nazarene University with self-reported or physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis on November 15, 2022. Participants were randomly assigned to a control (no mask), surgical, or KN95 mask group and walked around Perry Farm Park for an hour to assess ragweed sensitivity. Data was collected manually using a modified survey from allergy specialists and summarized in the results as an outline for future study. Survey questions were sent via school-wide email and disseminated through flyers distributed in nursing classes and to the men and women’s soccer teams. Results The surgical mask preliminarily trended a higher correlation on decreasing nasal allergic rhinitis symptoms than the KN95 masks, majority reporting mild nasal symptoms during the experience and no nasal symptoms after the experience. Most surgical mask-wearers felt the mask helped moderately during the experience or reduced one to two symptoms. Surgical mask-wearers reported a likeliness to wear the mask in the future. Conclusion The study implies that the surgical mask may effectively reduce nasal allergic rhinitis symptoms related to ragweed. A broader study and repetition of the study in the future is necessary to examine the effects of environmental change, such as low or high ragweed counts, and how late allergic rhinitis is affected by mask-wearing
