    Recent Empirical Evidence on the Perceived Impact of COVID 19 on Faculty and Students From 391 Faculty From 37 CCCU and CIC Institutions June-September 2021

    The presentation provides very recent data on the impact of COVID 19 from 391 Professors from 37 CCCU or CIC institutions. The data was gathered from June to September 2021- right at the height of COVID impacts. (This add-on set of scales was attached to the dissertation written by Dr. John Langenderfer, DBA, J.D. “The Role of an Academic Institution’s Organizational Culture in Retaining Employees during an Industry Downturn.”) Because of the time of the data gathering from June through September 2021, Dr. Daake saw this as a unique opportunity to study the impact of a BLACK–SWAN event in real-time. Dr. Daake and Dr. Langenderfer created 14 original scale items to measure this impact. The results of this part of the dissertation are presented, and potential implications are discussed. From the faculty\u27s perspectives, it is clear that this has been a very trying time for their institutions, and they believe it has impacted the quality and effectiveness of the educational process. It also implies significant damage to morale and the culture that needs to be repaired. Based on these results, Dr. Daake advances several exploratory hypotheses that need to be explored in future research. The analysis includes basic statistics, correlations, t-tests, ANOVA, and basic factor analysis. Other related issues are explored that are relevant to those seeking to do peer-reviewed or dissertation work

    Participation in STEM Activities and the Test Scores of Elementary ELL Students

    English language learners (ELLs) have been the fastest-growing student population in the country over the last decade, growing 60% compared with the 7% growth of the general student population. Swift growth has also been demonstrated in careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) during this period. The purpose of the current quantitative study was to investigate if there was a correlation between the participation of second, third, and fourth grade ELL students from a rural, low-income elementary school in the Midwest in STEM activities and their scores on nationally normed tests. A mixed-factorial ANOVA predicting overall NWEA Reading and Math RIT Scores from time point (Spring vs. Fall), STEM condition (STEM vs. no-STEM), and the interaction between time point and STEM condition. The research findings will help school districts, companies, and agencies promote the integration of ELL students into their STEM curriculum and assist in developing an ELL STEM curriculum

    Restoration of Β-Hexosaminidase A Deficiency through the use of Protein Chaperones

    Tay-Sachs disease (TSD, also known as GM2-gangliosidosis) is an incurable autosomal-recessive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by a mutation in the HEX A gene that codes for the lysosomal enzyme β-hexosaminidase A (Hex A). For patients with TSD, GM2-gangliosides cannot be properly broken down, and, as a result, accumulate in their neurons, causing severe neurological complications. Although all past treatment options have been ineffective, this study set out to reduce the number of GM2-gangliosides in cells by increasing Hex A activity using novel pharmacological chaperone therapy. Four factors, DMSO, glutamic acid, Pyrimethamine, and a decrease in temperature, were assessed for their ability to ameliorate Hex A activity in TSD cells and decrease the GM2-ganglioside buildup in a TSD derived cell line, GM00502. The human kidney fibroblast cell line contains two of the most common mutations that cause TSD (1278ins4 and 1421+1G→C). The effects of the chaperones outlined in this project have yet to be tested on a cell line with both of these major mutations. I hypothesized that temperature reduction, DMSO, glutamic acid, and pyrimethamine would rescue Hex A activity in the TSD derived human kidney fibroblast cell line GM00502. A study in cytotoxicity was conducted to find the optimum concentration of DMSO, glutamic acid, and Pyrimethamine to treat both GM00502 and HEK293 (control) human kidney fibroblasts. After confirming proposed treatment concentrations were not cytotoxic, a gradient of three concentrations of each factor was then used in the subsequent testing phase. Differences in GM2-ganglioside levels were quantified through the use of LysoTracker DND-26 staining and fluorescence microscopy. GM00502 TSD derived cells were shown to contain an increased accumulation of GM2-gangliosides when compared to the unafflicted HEK293 control cells. After treating GM00502 cells with DMSO, glutamic acid, Pyrimethamine, and a temperature reduction it was found that all treatments were able to reduce the overall GM2-ganglioside level. Likewise, each treatment was also able to further reduce the GM2-ganglioside levels in HEK293 cells. Of the four factors tested, glutamic acid appeared the most effective in decreasing lysosomal accumulation in both cell types (p\u3c0.05). Pyrimethamine also appeared to be effective at decreasing lysosomal accumulation in GM00502 cells (p\u3c0.005)

    A Self-Study of FRN Olivet: A Student-Led Food Recovery Model on a University Campus

    An alarming amount of unserved food, which emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, is thrown away daily on university campuses. In those same college communities, there is likely a large food insecure population that is going to bed hungry every night. The Food Recovery Network (FRN) is a network of colleges and universities across the United States that seeks to bridge this gap. The FRN chapter at Olivet Nazarene University, established in October 2017, encountered challenges in its first couple years of operation because there were not yet many resources that laid out best practices for a food recovery program on a college campus. In order to strengthen the FRN Olivet chapter and aid other universities in the implementation and operation of their own FRN chapter, a comprehensive model was created that lays out the processes used, the challenges faced, and the resources created by the FRN Olivet chapter. The model contains the following sections: an author’s note, the importance of starting an FRN chapter, implementing an FRN chapter, volunteers (composition, recruitment, and retention), recoveries, deliveries, training and development, social media, finance and fundraising, an all-school food drive called Move Out for Hunger, additional events such as awareness days and educational opportunities, and a succession plan. The FRN Olivet Model was reviewed by seven individuals and revised according to their suggestions. The goal is that by reading a single section, a representative from another university would have enough information to gain an understanding of how the system could be replicated successfully

    Sport Specialization and Injury Risk in NAIA Athletes

    Sport specialization is defined as intense year-round training in a single sport while excluding other sports. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between increased levels of sport specialization and injury risk, though other studies have contradicted this hypothesis. Previous literature has also suggested that sport specialization levels increase dramatically throughout high school, though this has not been investigated in post-high school athletes. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between sport specialization and injury risk, as well as how sport specialization levels change throughout college by distributing a questionnaire online to 251 undergraduate NAIA athletes. Participants were assessed according to their levels of specialization using a 3-point scale. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and correlational tests, showing a significant increase in specialization, though there were not enough unspecialized athletes to investigate a relationship between sport specialization and injury risk. While it is difficult to draw conclusions regarding a relationship between sport specialization and injury risk, the increase in specialization shows the need for further research into both sport specialization and injury risk, as well as research into NAIA athletes specifically

    Advocating for the Middle Man: An Explication of Chair Perceptions on Overcoming Emotion at Work

    The researcher’s study aimed to understand the perceptions of private university department chairs when engaging with emotional intelligence (EQ) at work. The qualitative approach provided the boundaries for the voice and the experience of the participants as the researcher collected interviews, department meeting minutes, and department program reviews from a sample of five department chairs across three, private universities. The following departments served as the study’s population: mathematics, family and consumer science, business, education, and modern languages. Findings revealed participants perceived job satisfaction through the mediator of emotion. Participants identified the emotional challenges of department chair and perceived emotion within the context of department chair as something to be worked through rather than overcome. Participants worked through the emotional challenges through communication and balance of priorities. Participants disclosed the significance of emotional regulation through the lens of identity, and the researcher found support of the department chair’s multi-faceted identities surfaced as important within the boundaries of the researcher’s study. Findings revealed contextualization of the department chair’s experience with emotional regulation to be subjective to the confines of the individual department, although, the need for emotional regulation while serving one’s institution transcends context. The researcher concluded department chairs do not receive formal, institutional emotional support and perceive support through organic, informal structures. Participants’ emotional regulation depended on organizational membership behavior based on individual capacities. The researcher’s contribution to the field of higher education explicated the blurred lines between participants’ internal, organizational identities and external identities and the perception of emotional support

    Tracking Simulated Somatosensory Deficiencies that Affect Postural Stability through Detrended Fluctuation Analysis

    Falls are a prevalent problem within elderly populations. Falls also increase the cost of healthcare, since they cause severe injuries frequently and negatively affect quality of life. Lack of postural stability is the consequence of falls, and postural stability is defined as the correct biomechanical execution based on sensory feedback. The types of sensory feedback are vision, vestibular (ear), proprioceptive (body awareness), and somatosensory (sensation of the environment). This study focuses on the lack of postural stability in quiet standing due to somatosensory and vision deficiencies. To track these deficiencies, 51 subjects stood for 60 seconds on two force plates, and their center of pressure (COP) time series were extracted. All subjects completed 3 trials with either eyes closed or open while standing on 5 foam thicknesses (0”, 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2”, and 1”). The different levels of foam simulated various levels of somatosensory deficiencies at the feet, which is a common symptom in people with high risk of falling (e.g., diabetic populations). To quantify these somatosensory deficiencies, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) is to be performed on all COP time series. DFA is one nonlinear measure used in human biomechanics that describes the quality of human motion rather than the quantity of human motion. It is hypothesized that DFA on COP time series can track deficiencies in the somatosensory and vision feedbacks. While this study does not cover real somatosensory deficiencies, it could offer a validated measure to future studies comprised of participants who suffer from peripheral neuropathy (e.g., diabetic populations)
