The Impact of Food Prices on College Students\u27 Food Choices
Get PDFLearning Outcome: Recognize the need for nutrition education among college students as it relates to health-conscious food purchases and the effect that price of nutrient-dense foods has on college students’ food purchases.
Introduction: Mulik & Haynes-Maslow (2019), noted purchasing healthy foods is often more expensive than unhealthy counterparts. The inability to afford nutrient-dense foods may lead to future health complications. Research results support the need for nutrition education for college students.
Methods: A quantitative online survey was administered to 2,658 college students, n=133. The survey combined Croker’s (2016) General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire to evaluate students’ understanding of nutrition and Mathew’s (2018) Food Choice Priorities Survey to determine factors of greatest importance regarding food choices.
Results: Participants who completed a nutrition class prior to the study reported a higher mean score (M = 12.8, SD = 3.63) for general nutrition knowledge than those who did not (M = 11.6, SD = 3.81). Statistically significant correlations were found between products participants would prefer to eat and products purchased based on price (p = rs =.51; p \u3c .001) and freshness quality of food (rs= .250; p \u3c .004) and participants’ importance of food price and convenience of obtaining food (rs =.418; p \u3c .001).
Discussion/Conclusion: Students’ food choice ranking indicate price of food and physical health important factors when making choices. The higher mean score of college students who received nutrition education compared to those who had not indicate value of nutrition education supporting students making nutritionally sound choices based on health and economic needs.

Short Bar Removal
Get PDFDuring production, Nucor occasionally gets short steel bars that do not meet the length specifications of their customers. Currently, removing these bars is a manual process that requires 1-2 workers to remove the bars from the line manually, which is both time consuming and costly. Part of the challenge of this process is that bars come off a cooling bed and then they form a group of bars (so they can stack and bundle them for transport). This is the point where the short bars must be removed. It is the goal of the project to investigate and identify a safe and effective method for removing these short bars from their production line
Centralized Wastewater System
Get PDFThe Village of Sanford, alongside the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and volunteer committees of developers, are considering options to build back housing stock that was lost during the flooding. There are multiple potential lots in the Village that are being explored, with about 15-20 being potential sites to be investigated. Habitat for Humanity will facilitate the rebuilding of single family homes, but will need engineering expertise where it concerns the sanitation systems for multi-family homes, condos, townhomes, or potentially a senior center. There is no centralized wastewater system for the Village, so, engineering options would need to look towards small or decentralized systems including combined septic and leach field systems, land application systems, pond treatment systems, or batch reactors. This may include fieldwork to examine local soil conditions, environmental resources present, available land, and applicable costs. It is unlikely that the alternatives assessment would include a centralized wastewater treatment system

After Writing 730 Newspaper Columns Over 13 Years –Important Lessons Learned and Advice to Others
No full textDr. Don Daake, Ph.D. (Florida State 1995), Business Professor Emeritus, and Dr. Edward Piatt, Ed.D. (ONU 2011), MBA Adjunct, share their secrets about writing and actually getting published. They are particularly interested in faculty and students who would like to join them as co-authors or anyone who enjoys writing and wants to get published. To paraphrase an old adage, If a tree falls in the forest with no ears to hear, does it make a sound. It matters not for the tree has fallen. Our version “If you write something and practically no one reads it, have you really written it?”
We have had a conservative “cumulative” readership of over 7-9 million readers over 13 years, including international readers. Ed and Don share the challenges, joys, opportunities, and positive influence writing can have on thousands of readers. If published in book form, these columns would be equivalent to over ten average length books.
Tips included: working with your publisher, using co-authors, coming up with original ideas, integrating cutting edge research, and getting selected by other media outlets (such as the AP, CBS online, and others.) Earlier versions of this presentation were given at two national conferences in Orlando and Arkansas. It is being submitted for an October 2022 CBFA conference in Oklahoma City. Dr. Daake also shares his extensive experience with peer-reviewed publications and the similarities and differences between these types of publications
Adults Perspectives on Past Youth Program Experiences
Get PDFThe study of youth development is a massive field that encompasses admirable literature and notable research. However, investigating past youth experiences through a work setting that promoted advancement in education, experience, and character through elevated youth roles and responsibilities provided a unique lens that could enlarge the field of youth development. This study, which focused on 12 former staff experiences in Thornton Township youth programs, addressed a literature gap. Although the literature on youth development, youth employment, mentoring, community, and positive youth development (PYD) was reviewed, the combined concepts of work and matriculation through adulthood could not be identified. A thorough analysis of qualitative data revealed three themes related to learning, training, and development; leadership; and culture. The conclusions drawn from participants’ experiences related back to the literature. The strongest conclusion involved the impact of participants’ experiences with meeting higher standards as adults in the programs. The novelty of this specific research led to several recommendations for further study

Get PDFA recent development in the realm of computer technology is the deepfake. Deepfakes, which train a computer model to digitally superimpose one person’s face onto another body in a separate video, has its uses for good and for ill, with the unfortunate tendency to the latter. The vast majority of deepfakes are used for pornography, most commonly depicting female celebrities as the subjects. At the less notable level, it is often used for revenge pornography. These aspects of deepfake technology are rarely discussed in mainstream media, which tends to focus on the less harmful uses, such as those for comedic celebrity impersonations or for beneficial uses in film. Based on the background research, this project is intended to create a short film addressing these issues within a fictional, but compelling story with the intentions of raising awareness among the public
