Assessment Of Walls with Phase Change Materials Through Synergistic and Performance Measures Using Experimental and Simulated Test Houses

Current research on living and working spaces continues to strive to identify the most energy-efficient methods for heating and cooling, and many novel technologies have emerged from the research. One of the most promising, and the topic of this quantitative analysis, is the retrofitting of phase change materials (PCMs) into the walls of structures. Research has shown positive results, such as a reduced transfer of heat through walls, when PCMs are retrofitted into wall construction. The present research takes previously gathered data from test houses, built with typical North American framing, and simulates an additional fourteen test houses from the gathered data. The simulated houses consisted of a unique combination of walls retrofitted with and without PCM in them. The fourteen unique simulations allowed for seven metrics, such as max heat flux, time delays (start, peak, and end), total heat, heat flux average, and standard deviation, to be measured. Most of the measure indicated a positive correlation with the addition of PCM being retrofitted into a wall. From the results, the east, west and south walls emerged to be the most influential when it came to the seven measures, and it is recommended that at least one of these three walls be included when retrofitting buildings

Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding their Interactions with the Disabled in Kankakee County

Background Previous research shows the rate of crime against people with disabilities is significantly higher than the general population. Despite this, gaps in the training and resources for officers to assist those with disabilities may exist. Eadens et al. (2008) explored this issue by evaluating officer attitudes towards intellectual disabilities. Kankakee County has a significant disabled population, and Illinois is ranked very low in the improvement of related policies, making this a valuable area of interest. Methods This study utilized the modified version of the Social Distance Questionnaire (SDQ) used by Eadens et al. (2008), which is both qualitative and quantitative. The survey was sent out to the five police departments in Kankakee County, and it received 37 responses. Data was coded in Microsoft Excel, and statistical tests were run through R Studio. Results Though distributions varied, the resulting mean scores trended toward the higher end of the SDQ scale, indicating more positive attitudes toward people with disabilities. Additionally, the evaluation of training and average survey scores as grouped by department suggested a positive correlation. However, due to the sample size these and other results did not meet the threshold of statistical significance. Conclusions Kankakee County’s participating officers appeared mostly to have positive attitudes towards intellectual disabilities. A positive correlation may exist between the officers’ scores and the amount of disability training they have received. To determine this, a study with a larger sample must be conducted

Therapeutic Use of Music for Geriatric Dementia Patients

    No full text
Dementia impacts millions of individuals and their families worldwide, yet many caregivers remain untrained, unpaid, and unable to maintain their own health while caring for their patients. Despite the need for support, limited resources exist to aid these caregivers in combatting this progressive, debilitating disease. One possibility lies in practices rooted in music therapy, which have been shown to restore memory retention, personhood, and quality of life in dementia patients. However, individuals outside of music therapists, especially those with limited musical backgrounds, may not consider implementing music therapy within their care plan. To make this approach more accessible, a website was created that educates caregivers of geriatric dementia patients on how to implement the therapeutic use of music in their own caregiving situations regardless of their musical ability. Six reviewers, five caregivers and one music therapist, evaluated the website in a survey that assessed the website navigation, comprehensibility of the content, educational value, accessibility, and practicality for caregivers of dementia patients. The results of the survey indicated that the website content was easy to navigate, accessible, practical for a variety of caregiving settings, comprehensible to the general public, and educational for individuals of diverse musical backgrounds. Open-ended feedback from the survey was reviewed and used to revise the website content for re-publishing. The intent of this website is to reach as many caregivers as possible to help better not only the lives of their dementia patients but their own lives as well

Lockheed Martin Ethics in Engineering Case Competition

    No full text
Two Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) senior engineering students competed in the 7thAnnual Ethics in Engineering Case Competition at the Lockheed Martin Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) in Bethesda, Maryland February 26-28, 2024. Over 70 colleges and universities from around the world competed. In this competition, academic institutions, each represented by a two-student undergraduate team and accompanying faculty mentor, present their solutions to a fictional case involving ethical, business, and engineering dilemmas. This year’s problem involves artificial intelligence and detection of asteroids. The annual event challenges students to think about the importance of ethics in the workplace and the various dilemmas that can arise, especially in the fast-paced world of technology. The ethics case presents a dilemma that requires two stakeholder groups to resolve. Two schools compete head-to-head, each representing one of the stakeholder groups. The goal for the successful team is to take the lead in coming up with a win-win solution. Each team has 5 minutes to present their assigned company’s recommendations to the other team and to the judges. The two teams then engage in a 15-minute discussion to work toward a common approach. After the discussion, there is a 5-minute question and answer period during which judges may ask teams to explain, clarify, or defend specific aspects of their arguments. This ONU Scholars Week presentation will discuss how the Lockheed Martin Ethics Engineering Case Study has been used to measure achievement of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) ethics outcome at ONU. The students attending the national competition will share their experience and what they learned from it

Culturally Responsive Teaching As a Missional Framework

    No full text
Illinois adopted the Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards in March 2021, for implementation in teacher preparation programs. Cultural responsiveness improves student outcomes across a range of indicators from math and reading scores to attendance, to postsecondary enrollment. The standards encourage self-reflection, knowledge of student\u27s communities, connection to culturally relevant curriculum, and encouragement of student leadership. These components of the culturally responsive teaching framework are in direct alignment with how Jesus connected to the communities He served. This presentation will highlight how Christian educators can effectively engage in culturally responsive teaching in an increasingly diverse education system by modeling themselves after the Master Teacher

Life Stories: Exploring Personal Identity Through Illustrations

Through graphite illustrations laden with deep symbolism and nostalgic imagery, the artist shares their identity in stories from their life. This thesis seeks to utilize the tools of narrative and self-identity to express the identity of the author and artist behind it. Scholarly sources were reviewed to understand narrative identity, works from professional visual artists were examined, and historical sources were consulted to deepen symbolism. The end product is this thesis, as well as a body of art. The identity understanding and symbolic elements allow the artist to reflect on their identity and share it through visuals of intricate and intimate drawings

Police Reforms and Illinois Police Officers\u27 Perceptions: A Multiple Regression Analysis

    No full text
The study determined to what extent a statistically significant relationship exists between Illinois police officers’ perceptions of three specific aspects implemented in the Safe-T Act (discretionary decertification, modified use of force requirements, and officer duty to intervene), with their job satisfaction and job motivation. Researchers are just beginning to understand how job satisfaction is affected by police officers’ perceptions of the factors concerning their law enforcement duties. The purpose of the study was to advance literature in the criminal justice field by examining various internal and external environmental characteristics and exploring variables that have not been tested as predictors of job satisfaction and job motivation for Illinois police officers using the Affective and General Attitude Word Pairs. The quantitative study utilized a non-experimental research approach with a correlation design. The methodology for the study was survey research by combining three survey instruments into one survey to answer the research questions. The population included all full-time municipal, county, or state police officers working in the State of Illinois. Using a G*Power calculator, the sample size needed for the study was 77 participants (N = 77). A total of 846 surveys were collected from survey participants, with 361 used for the research. Multiple regression determined that there was a significant relationship between Illinois police officers’ affective and general attitude and their job satisfaction and job motivation. The study combined organizational support theory with organizational justice theory as the foundation of the study since police officers’ perception of organizational support is associated with their organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and work motivation
