A study on length-weight relationships of Scatophagus argus (family: Scatophagidae) from Karachi coast, Pakistan
A study on length-weight relationships of Scatophagus argus was carried out during January 2015 to December 2015. A total of 282 specimens of different sizes were collected from the fish harbours of West Wharf and Korangi Creek, Pakistan. The b-value of regression equation shows the positive allometric growth in juveniles and adults of S. argus while, the negative allometric growth was obtained for combined fishes. The coefficient of correlation (r) was found as 0.992, 0.985 and 0.996 showing strong correlation between length and weight of juvenile, adult and combined fishes, respectively. All results were found significant at 5% significance level
Assessment of Commercially Important Small Pelagic Fishes in Davao Gulf CY 2004-2013
Davao Gulf houses diverse marine ecosystems that support the fisheries activities of the entire Region XI. A study through the National Stock Assessment Program from 2004-2013 was conducted to provide baseline information on the stock condition and the level of exploitation of the commercially important small pelagic fishes in Davao Gulf.
The results showed that commercial fishing contributes to about 88% of the annual average landed catch in the region. Ring net (in payao or free-school) and bag net are the only commercial types of fishing gears operating in Davao Gulf with average production per year of 3,069.62 MT, 199.25 MT, 122.21 MT respectively.
Moreover, RNp is the major gear catching Selar crumenopthalmus which is 32% of the total landed catch followed by Decapterus macarellus at 16%. Similarly, Mene maculata dominated the catch of RNf by 41% while most catch of BN is composed of Auxis rochei, Rastrelliger faughni and D. tabl. Species composition data indicated the bulk catch of these commercial gears is small pelagic fishes. However, the average CPUE of these gears showed a decreasing trend. The most evident decline occurred in 2013 with a drop of almost 70% in the CPUE of BN. Heavy fishing pressure is manifested since the annual harvest and the relative abundance of the small pelagic fishes generally decreased.
Likewise, L50 declined in which smaller sizes of fish are being caught as commercial gears are exploiting the juveniles. Most of the commercial fish catch has not attained maturity. The length frequency data also showed that E-values of these small pelagic fishes range from 0.51-0.86/year, an indication of exploitation above the optimum level. Consequently, the potential yield estimates already surpassed the allowable catch limit and fishing effort in both Schaefer and Fox models.
The study suggests that Davao Gulf is in the state of over exploitation due to intensified fishing operations. This calls for intervention and policy implementation to conserve and manage the fishery resources in Davao Gulf
Assessment of Small Pelagic Species Landed in ARMM, Sulu Sea
The purpose of this study is to provide a general information of fisheries in the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) covering the period from CY 2008 to 2012 which can be a basis for the formulation of fisheries management geared towards protection, preservation, utilization, and development of ARMM waters as embodied in Section 2 of the Implementing Rules of the ARMM Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act (MMAA) No. 86.
The number of boats and gears were obtained from the monitored data of NSAP. Catch and CPUE were analyzed using MS Excel. Seasonality of species was processed by extracting information on landed catch from the NSAP data and the high and low catch by month were then analyzed.
Tunas and oceanic pelagic are abundant finfishes in the Sulu Sea. The catch composition was dominated by neritic and oceanic tunas with Euthynus affinis representing 35.20% of the total catch, followed by Katsuwonus pelamis with 29.22%, and Auxis thazard with 5.44%.
Five small pelagic species such as Selar crumenophthalmus, Sardinella lemuru, Rastrelliger kanagurta, Auxis thazard, and Decapterus macrosoma were analyzed for seasonality and the results showed that these species commonly peaked in terms of catch during the 1st and 2nd quarters of every year from CY 2008 to CY 2012. Population parameter values (K and L∞) of the selected species were found to be within the values given in FishBase. The length frequency distribution of selected small pelagic species shows a situation of growth overfishing since they were caught at sizes before their length at first maturity (Lm). Estimates of fishing mortality and exploitation rates for most of the species analyzed were found to have exceeded the Eopt level

Supporting community-based resource management in Solomon Islands: the role of provincial governments
Rural communities in Solomon Islands rely heavily on coastal fisheries for food and income. However, coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass are degrading in many areas because of overharvesting, pollution and unsustainable land-use activities such as logging. The degradation of coastal fisheries has big implications for the food security and livelihoods of rural communities. The national government recognizes the importance of coastal fisheries and aims to ensure that 50 percent of coastal areas are sustainably managed by 2020. Essential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran
Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries and are distributed along the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Using a logbook on small pelagic fisheries, a GIS-based environmental modeling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of anchovy and sardine in relation to environmental variables. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was applied to provide a preliminary view of the relationships between fish presence/absence and environmental variables. Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) indicated the presence/absence of fish was related to distance from the nearest coast, depth, sea surface Chlorophyll-a, and SST. Results of the EFH showed that sardine is concentrated in specific areas of more favorable conditions, such as north of the Persian Gulf and all areas of the northwest of the Oman Sea. However, EFH of anchovy showed a more widespread distribution, occupying most of the north-west of the Oman Sea coastal waters, south of Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormoz as well as the Parsian district in the north of the Persian Gulf. In this study, it seems that the anchovy showed the probability of presence in the areas with more distance from the coastal waters. However, the EFH probability presences of sardine were predicted for near coastal water and obviously, shallower waters. Due to the development of small pelagic fisheries, it is highly recommended to investigate anchovy and sardine fishing possibility in areas with high EFH prediction probability
