Sri Lanka: aiming for holistic management
A workshop to strengthen small-scale fishery communities in the context of the SSF Guidelines was held on 28 September 2018 at the National Science Foundation in Colombo, Sri Lanka. A workshop was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka for the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The workshop, held on 28th September, 2018 was attended by 45 participants from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development (MFARD), the Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development (DFARD), National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) and Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC), and 15 officers from Coast Conservation Department (CCD), Agriculture Department, Ministry of Tourism, Department of Wildlife, Coast Guard (Navy) and Marine Environmental Protection Agency (MEPA)
Genetics diversity of Aphanius ginaonis and Aphanius dispar in Hormozgan and Bushehr coastal zones respectively using PCRRFLP molecular marker
In this study, two populations of Aphanius ginaonis (Holly, 1929) and Aphanius dispar (Ruppell, 1828) were examined to determine genetic diversity using PCR-RFLP technique. A total of 60 individual specimens were collected from Hormozgan and Bushehr internal waters, comprising two sampling sites; from Geno hot spring (30 individuals of A. ginaonis) and Mir Ahmad hot spring (30 individuals of A. dispar). The D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA (550 bp) was amplified using PCR followed by RFLP analysis based on 5 restriction endonuclease enzymes (AluI, DpnI, Eco47I, HindIII HinfI). In order to undertake data analysis, Arlequin 3.11 was applied. Results at population levels indicated that Geno individuals have more haplotype diversity than Mir Ahmad individuals (9 and 3 haplotypes respectively). However, further investigation using genetic techniques is required to clarify the molecular history and evolution of Aphanius species in this area. Results obtained from this research would be applicable to understand conservation genetics and management of this important fish species in Iran
Study of morphology and density of Diogenes sp. (Anomura: Diogenidae) in Bahmanshir Estuary (NW Persian Gulf)
Taxonomic studies on the Anomura larvae of the Persian Gulf are relatively few. This research has been done on larval stage of Diogenes sp. (Anomura: Diogenidae) on coastal waters of Bahmanshir River. Anomura is a group of decapod crustaceans, including hermit crabsthat are cosmopolitan and could be found from coastal waters to 5000 m in depth. The larval stages differ among families of Anomura. Anomura larval samples collected by plankton net (mesh size of 300 µm) from seven stations in February 2011 to October 2012. Planktonic larval were sampled from the Bahmanshir River in north of the Persian Gulf. The larval stages illustrated and described in detail for Diogenes sp. Finally Diogenes sp. were identified and their schematic figures were made using Camera Lucida. Maximum value of the average abundance of larvae (12.3±3.4 ind.m^3) was recorded in May. Also positive relationship between salinity with frequency of Diogenes sp. were found significantly using spearman correlation coefficients (P<0.05)
Cyclone Ockhi: disaster risk management and sea safety in the Indian marine fisheries sector
Between 29 November and 3 December, 2017, Cyclone Ockhi devastated hundreds of lives and livelihoods of coastal fishing communities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, India. This study assesses the impacts of the cyclone on fishing communities and the mechanisms in place at the local, national and international levels to address disaster risks and sea safety in small-scale fisheries, using a human rights-based approach. In line with the Sendai Framework 2015-2030 and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries, the study recommends applying “relief-development continuum” and “build back better” concepts to the management of disaster risks in order to save lives and to reduce damage to fisheries assets and livelihoods
Updated statewide abundance estimates for the Florida manatee
Knowing how many manatees live in Florida is critical for conservation and management of this threatened species. Martin and others flew aerial surveys in 2011–2012 and estimated abundance in those years using advanced techniques that incorporated multiple data sources. We flew additional aerial surveys in 2015–2016 to count manatees and again applied advanced statistical techniques to estimate their abundance. We also made several methodological advances over the earlier work, including accounting for how sea state (water surface conditions) and synchronous surfacing behavior affect the availability of manatees to be detected and incorporating all parts of Florida in the area of inference. We estimate that the number of manatees in Florida in 2015–2016 was 8,810 (95% Bayesian credible interval 7,520–10,280), of which 4,810 (3,820–6,010) were on the west coast of Florida and 4,000 (3,240–4,910) were on the east coast. These estimates and associated uncertainty, in addition to being of immediate value to wildlife managers, are essential new data for incorporation into integrated population models and population viability analyses

Effects of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) anesthesia on some haematological and biochemical indices of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)
In this study, the anesthetic effects of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) on possible primary (cortisol level) and secondary (haematological indices and glucose level) stress responses were studied in silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Fish were first exposed to 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mL L^-1 2-PE, and the time of induction (deep anesthesia) and recovery were measured. At concentrations of 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mL L^-1 2-PE, all fish were anaesthetized within 3 min of exposure. For assessing possible stress effects caused by effective concentrations of 2-PE, the haematological indices, serum cortisol and glucose were determined in the deeply anaesthetized fish as stress indicators. 2-PE exposure resulted in a significant increase in red blood cell (RBC) amounts at 0.1 and 0.3 mL L^-1. A parallel increase in hemoglobin and Haematocrite amounts at 0.1 concentrations (p<0.05) was observed. The serum cortisol levels had the highest amount in 0.1 mL L^-1 of 2-PE. Moreover 2-PE exposure resulted in a significant increase in glucose amounts first at the 0.1 and later in the 0.3 mL L^-1 concentrations. This study shows that rapid induction of deep anesthesia with a relatively high concentration of 2-PE (0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mL L^-1) was associated with the lowest effects on the haematological and serum biochemical indices in silver carp and so 0.7 mL L^-1 could be suggested as a suitable dose for haematological studies in this species
Health risk assessment of selected heavy metals in some edible fishes from Gorgan Bay, Iran
The objective of this study was to assess the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr and Fe) in the muscles of five fish species (Sander lucioperca, Liza auratus, Alosa caspia, Cyprinus carpio and Liza saliens) from Gorgan Bay in the south-eastern Caspian Sea, in order to determine the value daily intake of heavy metals by consumption of fish and human health risk assessment. The concentration of metals was estimated using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. Potential health risk assessments based on estimated daily intake (EDI) values and target hazard quotient (THQ) indicated that the intakes of metals by consuming these fish species do not result in an appreciable hazard risk for the human body. The hazard index (HI) calculated was lower than 1 for all the species. However, the results indicate that the high concentrations of Pb (in the muscle of L. auratus) and Fe in all fish is alarming
