    Feeding habits of pick handle barracuda (Sphyraena jello) Cuvier, 1829 along the coast of Pakistan

    A one year combined study of both sexes was conducted from March 2017 to February 2018 to investigate the feeding habit of Pick handle Barracuda (Sphyraena jello) Cuvier, 1829 locally called as Safaid kund along the coast of Pakistan, a large species found in Pakistani water caught mainly by bottom set gillnet throughout the year. Samples studied at Karachi fish harbor, in commercial catch which is the major landing center of Pakistan. During this counting method was applied with naked eye. Mostly fishes characterized by 91.66%, cephalopod 5.66% and shrimp 2.78% made the highest and lowest stomach content respectively shoes carnivorous behavior of the species

    Biometric properties of euryhaline fish the sand smelt Atherina boyeri Risso, 1810

    In this study the presence of sand smelt Atherina boyeri Risso, 1810, an invasive and translocated species has been reported in the Hirfanlı Dam Lake, Turkey. The fish samples were collected from the fishermen operating in the area in April 2016. Twenty-three morphometric characteristics of A. boyeri, were taken, including standard length (SL), fork length (FL), total length (TL), preorbital distance, eye diameter, interorbital distance, head length, head width, dorsal fin I nose point distance, dorsal fin II nose point distance, preanal distance, prepectoral distance, preventral distance, dorsal fin I base length, dorsal fin II base length, anal fin base length, pectoral fin base length, ventral fin base length, maximum body height, caudal peduncle height, body width, caudal peduncle width, body weight (W). The SL varied between 62 to 75 mm and weight 2.324 to 4.133 g in females. Whereas in males the SL varied between 56 to78 mm and weight 1.533 to 4.011 g. The sex ratio was slightly in favour of females being 54.4%

The 11th Festival Pêcheurs du Monde was held at Lorient in France under a renewed team. It kept its promise of quality audience and quality films. The festival, once again, showed that it could address questions about fishing with high-quality films, many of which had never before been screened in France. The theme of the lives of fishers and their communities highlighted remarkable films that often go unnoticed at more general festivals. The Lorient festival thus plays an important role in making French audiences discover heartfelt award-winning foreign films that depict the lives of fishers

    The voices of small-scale fishers and civil society organizations were loud and clear at the 3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress. By all accounts, the past ten years have been truly exceptional for small-scale fisheries. One of the highlights is the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) by FAO member states in 2014. As the first international instrument specifically designed for small-scale fisheries, the SSF Guidelines give the much-needed visibility to this important sector, calling all parties to promote small-scale fisheries sustainability through a human-rights based approach. The SSF Guidelines set off waves of excitement and optimism about the new era for small-scale fisheries

    A World Bank-funded loan project has been developed in the Indian state of Jharkhand to enhance and diversify household incomes for targeted beneficiaries through fish culture. Jharkhand is one of India’s poorest states. Its poverty rate is the highest in the country after Chhattisgarh’s, with 37 per cent of the population below the poverty line. The average rate of decline in poverty in Jharkhand up to 2012 was 0.9 per cent per year—much slower than in the rest of India’s rate of 4.8 per cent per year. A female literacy rate of 55 per cent is much lower than the rest of India’s rate of 65 per cent. Malnourishment is a serious problem; 47 per cent of the children under five years are stunted, about 42 per cent are underweight and 16 per cent are wasted. More than 70 per cent of women and about 67 per cent of adolescent girls in the state are anaemic. Most households lack basic access to water and sanitation

    Oral administration of garlic powder (Allium sativum) on growth performance and survival rate of Carassius auratus fingerlings

    This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different levels of garlic (Allium sativum) on growth survival and nutritional characteristics of goldfish (Carassius auratus). For this purpose, 180 goldfish with an average initial weight of 1.18± 0.08 g were introduced randomly into 12 aquaria (50×30×40 cm) in 4 groups, with 15 fish in each group. Treatments were fed on a basal diet for one week, followed by experimental diets for eight weeks. Garlic powder was added at levels of 0 (Control), 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg kg^-1 to commercial diet. At the end of the experiment, growth and survival rates and feed performance were evaluated. There was no significant difference in growth rate and feed efficiency between treatments, although they were better in the 0.5% level. The highest survival rate was achieved in the 0.5% treatment that showed a significant difference compared to the control diet (p<0.05). The best growth performance and feed efficiency were obtained in fish fed the 0.5% garlic powder diet

    Effects of Net Depth Reduction to Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus) Catch

    Analysis on the catch of Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) from purse seine and ring nets of various net depths was conducted to assess the effect of reducing net depth as a compatible measure the Philippines has implemented and reducing the catch of Bigeye in its internal waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The study was based on observer reports from ring net and purse seine fishing vessels operating in internal waters and EEZ as well as from group seine operations in the high seas pocket 1. Nets were classed by depth to determine and compare variations on the catch of Bigeye, catch rates and relative proportion, species composition, and fishing grounds. Results indicated that the catch of Bigeye is correlated with the depth of net, with a significantly higher catch of Bigeye in deeper nets. The result of the study is consistent with other studies elsewhere, and in consonance with the implementation of Fisheries Administrative Order 236 limiting the depth to 115 fathoms for ring net and purse seine operating in Philippine internal waters and the EEZ as a compatible measure to reduce the catch of Bigeye

    Community structure and seasonal distribution of intertidal macrofauna from two rocky shores of Karachi coast

    Rocky shores are considered heterogeneous environments due to their composition and structure. Therefore, they support numerous habitats for flora and fauna. Organisms found on rocky shores are facing intense physicochemical conditions during tidal changes from upper to lower intertidal zones. Total (N=1888) specimens were collected on seasonal basis from intertidal zone during low tide from two rocky sites of Karachi coast, Buleji and Sunehri during January 2017 to December 2017. The highest number of individuals (N=1041), were recorded from Buleji than Sunehri (N= 847). The seasonal abundance in Mollusca were measured as (36.84%), (63.67%), (25.08) and (40.38%) from Buleji while from Sunehri (45.16 %), (46.01%), (48.65) and (42.79 %) during pre-monsoon, south-west monsoon, post monsoon and north-east monsoon season respectively. Group Arthropoda, Mollusca and Echinodermata were shows the highest abundance of the species at both sites as compare to other groups. The highest diversity index from Sunehri (H'=0.64) was measured in north-east monsoon season meanwhile, (H'=0.61) was measured in post monsoon season from Buleji coast. Evenness index (J'=0.25) in pre-monsoon season from Buleji and (J'=0.28) in south-west monsoon season from Sunehri coast. Season shows the great abundance of species as compare to other seasons. No significant correlation was observed in between seasons, water temperature and salinity with macrofauna groups at both sites
