Potencialidades de las macroalgas marinas argentinas
Get PDFEn la extensa costa argentina se encuentran numerosas especies de macroalgas de importancia a nivel mundial. En el presente trabajo se debaten los estudios más relevantes publicados hasta la fecha sobre los usos de las algas marinas y se mencionan las investigaciones argentinas con el objetivo de evaluar el estado de conocimiento del recurso. La revisión muestra que en nuestro país se publicaron numerosos trabajos que evidencian el valor de las algas en la alimentación humana y animal, en la producción de compuestos químicos beneficiosos para la salud y en aplicaciones ambientales. Sin embargo, ciertas áreas tales como el desarrollo de biocombustibles y el uso en el campo de la agricultura revelan la necesidad de profundizar en la investigación. Se concluye que las algas marinas argentinas, además de tener numerosas aplicaciones, son un recurso con gran potencial de explotación comercial para beneficio de las poblaciones costeras
Determination of mercury (Hg) in two sea cucumber species Ohshimella ehrenbergii (Selenka, 1868) and Stolus buccalis (Stimpson, 1855) from the Karachi coast
Get PDFIn this study the amounts of mercury (Hg) were determined in tentacles and muscle tissues of O. ehrenbergii and S. buccalis from two coastal sites of Karachi; Buleji and Sunehri during Southwest monsoon (August and September) and Northeast monsoon (December and January) seasons of the year 2018. The mean amounts of Hg in edible tissues of sea cucumbers were as follows: O. ehrenbergii (0.0176 mg/kg dry wt.) and S. buccalis (0.0155 mg/kg dry wt.). Hg amounts in muscles of both species are much lower than the maximum permissible limits (0.5 mg/kg wet wt.). Estimated Daily Intakes for adults consuming O. ehrenbergii and S. buccalis are lower than published RfD values. Total Target Hazard Quotient (TTHQ) values (0.00787) are also lower than 1, it may be concluded that the consumption of these sea cucumbers from Karachi, do not pose any health hazards to human as Hg amounts were concerned

Get PDFA Fisheries Forum in Cuba brought together stakeholders from coastal communities to examine opportunities and challenges to make fisheries more sustainable. Fishermen from across Cuba gathered for the first time in September 2018 at the Fisheries Forum called Encuentro Pesquero. For three days, 55 stakeholders, including 21 fishermen from 10 coastal communities, joined heads to diagnose the status of fish populations and priorities for their management across Cuba’s four fishing zones. They examined opportunities and challenges for sustainable fisheries and developed a shared vision for the future

No full textReflections on the ‘Towards an Inclusive Blue Economy’ conference organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development in London in February 2019.Behind the trendy environmental terms ‘Blue Economy’ and ‘Blue Growth’ lies a view that the Earth’s oceans promise great untapped economic potential. The unutilized value of the oceans is estimated at US$24 trillion, including sectors like energy generation, maritime transport, tourism, capture fisheries and aquaculture. Such a Blue Economy is supposed to also cater to aspects of social and ecological sustainability. However, a Blue Economy will not become inclusive nor equitable by default. This was the starting point for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) conference in London titled ‘Towards an Inclusive Blue Economy’, held on February 25-26, 2019

No full textThe hellish expansion of salmon farming in Chile’s Patagonia could threaten a hundred years of Chile-Norway relations. It is said that if there is such a thing as a salmon farming heaven, it is in Norway; whilst if there is a hell, it is in Chile. The South American country displays the worst labour standards globally for this industry. Between July 2013 and January 2019, it killed 31 of its workers. Its sanitary and environmental records are abysmal, with an abusive use of antibiotic and anti-parasite treatments, a mega-crisis of infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus, successive noxious and toxic algal blooms, massive dumping of dead fish into the sea and antifouling paints into lakes and rivers, along with the sinking of salmon well-boats, to name but a few of its problems

Fish assemblages and habitat ecology of River Pinder in central Himalaya, India
Get PDFSnow-fed River Pinder -a tributary of River Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of four sites specified strong relationship with species richness. The distribution of fish species showed interesting patterns, 33% species were common to all four sampling sites while 14.80% were restricted to single site and the remaining species were randomly distributed among two or three sampling sites. Habitat variability in the river significantly influenced the species assemblage structure. About 7.40% species were found common to all habitats while 3.70% species were restricted to only single habitat type. The remaining 88.90% of species were dwelling between two to three habitat types. Deep pools recorded maximum species richness followed by shallow pools, while least species richness was recorded in cascade habitats. The conservation status of fish fauna of the river was ascertained by CAMP (Conservation Assessment and Management Plan). Out of 27 species, the status of 8 species was not assessed due to data being deficient, 7 species were categorised as lower risk near threatened, 6 as vulnerable, 5 as endangered while 1 species was exotic
Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) an emerging disease caused by Nodaviridae in aquatic hosts: Diagnosis, control and prevention: A review
Get PDFBetanodavirus is one of the two genera making up the family Nodaviridae and is the etiological agent of viral nervous necrosis (VNN, also known as viral encephalopathy and retinopathy or VER). The virus infects a large range of host species in more than 50 species of marine and freshwater fish worldwide from different geographical areas and the known host range continues to expand as new species of fish are used for aquaculture. The disease is characterized by vacuolating necrosis of neural cells of the brain, retina and spinal cord and causes up to 100% mortality in larval and juvenile fish, and can cause significant losses in older fish. The lack of knowledge about control and prevention of the disease makes the problem serious and impedes development of management approaches. Therefore this review focuses on current knowledge and future perspectives of viral nervous necrosis in the aquaculture industry with special focus on the type of diagnosis, control and prevention of the disease
Quality enhancement in refrigerated tiger tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets using chitosan coating containing green tea extract
Get PDFThe effects of chitosan (2%) coating combined with green tea extract (GTE) (1%) on the quality of tiger-tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets including chemical, microbiological, texture, color and sensory properties during 16 days of refrigerated storage was investigated. The color changes were significantly retared, and the texture parameteres and sensory scores were significantly improved in tiger- tooth croaker coated by chitosan, GTE and chitosan combined with GTE, compared with the control. The coincidental lowered rate of increase total volatile base (TVB) content, thiobarbitoric acid (TBA), peroxide value (POV) and free fatty acids (FFA) were obtained in tiger-tooth croaker coated chitosan+GTE. Chitosan in combination with GTE had higher inhibition on microbial growth and yielded the tigertooth croaker with higher likeness, compared with the other treatments. Therefore, fish coated with chitosan+GTE had the lowest losses in quality during refrigerated storage
