    New observations from the intestinal fauna of Kerodon rupestris (Wied, 1820) (Rodentia, Cavidae), Brazil: a checklist spanning 30,000 years of parasitism

    Este levantamento de parasitos intestinais de Kerodon rupestris, um roedor endêmico da região semiárida brasileira, revelou registros de 25 táxons de enteroparasitos compreendendo Cestoda (Anoplocephalidae), Trematoda, Acanthocephala e Nematoda (Ancylostomidae, Ascarididae, Heterakidae, Oxyuridae, Pharyngodonidae, Trichuridae, Capillariidae, Trichostrongylidae, and Strongyloididae), e dois táxons de coccídios. Os estudos paleoparasitológicos e parasitológicos publicados até 2019 foram avaliados no presente trabalho e as informações de localização, local da infecção, datação da amostra e dados do hospedeiro, foram resumidas a partir de cada referência. Análises de fezes recentes e coprólitos revelaram a maior riqueza de espécies no estado do Piauí. Os dados cronológicos corroboram que Trichuris spp. e oxiurídeos fazem parte da fauna parasitária de K. rupestris. Essa é a primeira lista de verificação de parasitos intestinais de K. rupestris.This checklist of parasites of Kerodon rupestris, an endemic rodent from the Brazilian semiarid region, revealed records of 25 enteroparasite taxa comprising Cestoda (Anoplocephalidae), Trematoda, Acanthocephala and Nematoda (Ancylostomidae, Ascarididae, Heterakidae, Oxyuridae, Pharyngodonidae, Trichuridae, Capillariidae, Trichostrongylidae, and Strongyloididae), and two taxa of coccidian. Paleoparasitological and parasitological studies published until 2019 were assessed in the present study and locality information, site of infection, sample dating, and host data were summarized from each reference. Analyses of recent feces and coprolites revealed the highest species richness in the Piauí State. The chronological data corroborated that Trichuris spp. and oxyurids are part of the parasitic fauna of K. rupestris. This represents the first checklist of intestinal parasites from K. rupestris

Belo Horizonte, MG, Brasil.The progression of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in Africa has so far been heterogeneous, and the full impact is not yet well understood. In this study, we describe the genomic epidemiology using a dataset of 8746 genomes from 33 African countries and two overseas territories. We show that the epidemics in most countries were initiated by importations predominantly from Europe, which diminished after the early introduction of international travel restrictions. As the pandemic progressed, ongoing transmission in many countries and increasing mobility led to the emergence and spread within the continent of many variants of concern and interest, such as B.1.351, B.1.525, A.23.1, and C.1.1. Although distorted by low sampling numbers and blind spots, the findings highlight that Africa must not be left behind in the global pandemic response, otherwise it could become a source for new variants

    Differential expression profiles of miRNAs and their putative targets in Schistosoma mansoni during its life cycle

    Background: Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by Schistosoma. Due to its complex life cycle, evolutionary position and sexual dimorphism, schistosomes have several mechanisms of gene regulation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short endogenous RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by targeting mRNA transcripts. Objectives: Here, we tested 12 miRNAs and identified their putative targets using a computational approach. Methods: We performed the expression profiles of a set of miRNAs and their putative targets during the parasite's life cycle by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Findings: Our results showed differential expression patterns of the mature miRNAs sma-miR-250; sma-miR-92a; sma-miR-new_4-3p; sma-miR-new_4-5p; sma-miR-new_5-5p; sma-miR-new_12-5p; sma-miR-new_13-3p and sma-miR-new_13-5p. Interestingly, many of the putative target genes are linked to oxidative phosphorylation and are up-regulated in adult-worms, which led us to suggest that miRNAs might play important roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of genes related to energetic metabolism inversion during parasite development. It is noteworthy that the expression of sma-miR-new_13-3p exhibited a negative correlation on SmNADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase complex I.     Corpus callosum dysgenesis causes novel patterns of structural and functional brain connectivity

    Developmental malformations (dysgenesis) of the corpus callosum lead to neurological conditions with a broad range of clinical presentations. Investigating the altered brain connectivity patterns is crucial to understanding both adaptive and maladaptive neu roplasticity in corpus callosum dysgenesis patients. Here, we acquired structural diffusion-weighted and resting-state functional MRI data from a cohort of 11 corpus callosum dysgenesis patients (five with agenesis and six with hypoplasia) and compared their structural and functional connectivity patterns to healthy subjects selected from the Human Connectome Project. We found that these patients have fewer structural inter- and intra-hemispheric brain connections relative to healthy controls. Interestingly, the patients with callosal agenesis have a scant number of inter-hemispheric connections but manage to maintain the full integrity of functional connectivity between the same cortical regions as the healthy subjects. On the other hand, the hypoplasic group pre sented abnormal structural and functional connectivity patterns relative to healthy controls while maintaining the same total amount of functional connections. These results demonstrate that acallosal patients can compensate for having fewer structural brain connections and present functional adaptation. However, hypoplasics present atypical structural connections to different brain regions, leading to entirely new and abnormal functional brain connectivity patterns.202
