Una Biblioteca Digitale Semantica per il Comune di Milano
No full textIn the second half of 2007 the Municipality of Milan decided to co-finance a one year project, proposed by CILEA, called “Biblioteca Aperta di Milano” (Milan Open Library) or BAMI, aimed at creating an integrated system to make available on the Web a set of digitized documents from the cultural institutions of Milan. The project led to the creation of one of the first Semantic Digital Library in Italy. To meet the goals of the project, indeed, we adopted Semantic Web standards and technologies to build the knowledge base and used a faceted browser for the user interface. To store and provide the visualisation of digital documents we used two different applications: CodeX[ml] and AriannaWeb. Regarding the selection of content, we decided to focus mainly on the documents that belong to a specific branch of the city's cultural heritage: those from 19th century, giving special attention to musical documents. In this paper we present the methodology and the workflow that led us to build an ontology with the aid of a Scientific committee of librarians and 19th century music's experts. We also illustrate the building of a dedicated web-based editor that we used to populate the ontology. One of the most important objectives of the project was to overcome the limitations of the search engines traditionally used in the librarian domain by providing the users with new tools for browsing and analysing cultural knowledge. Thus the paper also focuses on the BAMI User Interface, which was built by extending and enhancing Longwell, a faceted RDF browser developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Nella seconda metà del 2007 il Comune di Milano ha deciso di cofinanziare un progetto della durata di un anno, proposto dal CILEA, denominato “Biblioteca Aperta di Milano” (BAMI) che ha portato nel corso del 2009 alla creazione di una delle prime Semantic Digital Library in ambito italiano. Il progetto mirava a creare un sistema integrato che rendesse disponibili via web documenti digitali appartenenti alle istituzioni culturali milanesi. Per raggiungere l’obiettivo si è deciso di adottare gli standard e le tecnologie del Semantic Web per modellare la “base di conoscenza” ed è stato utilizzato un faceted browser per costruire l’interfaccia che ne permettesse la navigazione e l’interrogazione. Per conservare, gestire e garantire la fruizione degli oggetti digitali sono stati utilizzati due diversi sistemi: CodeX[ml] per le risorse bibliografiche e AriannaWeb per le risorse archivistiche. Per quanto concerne la selezione dei documenti si è deciso di concentrarsi principalmente su quelli riconducibili all’800 milanese, con particolare riguardo alle testimonianze legate al mondo della musica. Il presente contributo mira ad illustrare la metodologia e le diverse fasi del lavoro che hanno portato alla creazione di un’ontologia dell’800 musicale milanese, con il contributo di un comitato scientifico composto da bibliotecari ed esperti della musica del XIX secolo. Verranno illustrate inoltre la creazione e la costruzione di un editor web based utilizzato per popolare l’ontologia. Uno dei principali obiettivi del progetto era quello di superare le limitazioni dei motori di ricerca tradizionali utilizzati in ambito bibliotecario, fornendo all’utente strumenti innovativi per navigare e analizzare l’informazione culturale. Ci si soffermerà anche sull’interfaccia del portale BAMI, sviluppata estendendo le funzionalità di Longwell, il faceted browser, creato dal Massachusetts Institute of Technology per la navigazione di dataset in formato RDF
SURplus Open Archive (OA): il repository istituzionale a servizio della ricerca
No full textOA (Open Archive) is an integrated module of the SURplus service for the creation of an institutional repository for the research output. The module, based on the open-source software ‘DSpace’, was implemented by the AePIC Team developers at CILEA to ensure compliancy with international standards and visibility requirements for publications, authors and their institutions on one hand, and the necessary flexibility to support processes at different universities or research centres on the other hand. Within the SURplus suite, the OA module provides data and metadata for further elaboration: reports, statistical analysis, research evaluation and assessment according to a variety of metrics.OA (Open Archive) è il modulo integrato del servizio SURplus che permette di creare un repository istituzionale per i prodotti della ricerca. Il modulo è stato realizzato dal team AePIC del CILEA basandosi su una personalizzazione ed evoluzione del software open source DSpace e consente da un lato la piena conformità agli standard internazionali che garantiscono ampia visibilità alle pubblicazioni, ai loro autori e alle istituzioni che li supportano, dall'altro la flessibilità necessaria all'adattamento ai processi di ciascun ateneo o ente di ricerca. Nell'ambito della suite SURplus il modulo OA fornisce tutti i dati e metadati utili alla reportistica, all'analisi statistica e alla valutazione dei prodotti della ricerca secondo varie metriche
