The International Conference HPGC 2008 concerned about two important news from HPC world: the evolution from Grids to Cluod Services and the new challenges to create Exascale computing environments.

    No full text
The High performance Computing team together with the E-learning Management and Assistance team are realising on-line lessons about programming and efficiently using the high performance computing platforms. The introduction to Fortran programming lessons are a reality already and several students have already joined them. New in-depth modules are going to be offered soon, so that participants will have the opportunity of learning the most modern and efficient Fortran programming techniques.

Almanacco SBN. News sui servizi CILEA per i Poli SBN: luglio-settembre 2008

In the quarter just ended, a lot of activities were carried out by CILEA team providing support to SBN poles. In particular, for the Polo USM, that is moving to Sebina OL, CILEA has made the first and important activity essential to the success of the process. Other important activities were carried out for the pole Unix client / server (two UNIMARC imports, both completed successfully) and the pole LO2 (customization of the OPAC for the Library of the Regional Council of Lombardia).Nel trimestre appena trascorso, diverse attività sono state svolte dai team CILEA che forniscono servizi ai poli SBN.

    No full text
We oppose numerical physics, i.e. numerical calculations serving the needs of traditional theoretical physics, to Computer Simulation (with focus on Condensed Matter). The latter is based on the idea that we can solve, by brute computing power, models of matter subjected to the exact laws of physics. In the case of Condensed Matter that amounts to solve the Schroedinger equation or, possibly, justified approximations to it and apply to the mechanical solution so obtained the rules of Statistical Mechanics. By this token Computer Simulation has established itself as the key tool of Theoretical Physics to which it has become constitutive. Let us refer to that as to the modern Theoretical Physics. It is not an exaggeration to say that this process - still now not completely understood by the traditional theoreticians - has been much more a revolution than a simple evolution of the discipline. So much so that today the predictive power of Physics has gone largely beyond its historical boundaries invading (and being in part reshaped by) not only Chemistry and its related disciplines but also Biology, Materials Science etc: from simple fluids to human immune response! The paper presents briefly the fundamental tools of this approach (Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics, Ab initio, Path Integrals, etc) and discusses the ingredients of its present success. Special merits go to algorithms and the specific techniques developed in the domain of High Performance Computing. Special credits are due to the computing centres, like CASPUR, which have understood the importance of the field and invested in it

Interaction of metal atoms with organic thin film is a fundamental issue to optimize performancesof novel devices. The computational investigations, based on density functionaltheory, reveal that a realistic description of the reactive processes is obtained whenthe organic thin film is modelled by its crystallographic structure. In this case, the metal atoms can react with multiple organic molecules present inthe solid forming complexes where they are bound both to O atoms and to aromatic Catoms of the molecules.Calculated band gap states, induced by chemical reaction upon deposition, reproducequite well the measured density of states as a function of the metal concentration inthe solid.Simulated core level shift spectra for N(1s), O(1s), Al (2p), in doped systems, are ingood agreement with experimental spectra and the electronic structure analysis providesa microscopic description of reaction processes.Interestingly, K atoms in PTCDA solid are ionically bound to anhydride O atoms andare able to form quasi mono-dimensional chain along the stack direction of the organicmaterial

    Ecografia 3-D in tempo reale

Many academic and industrial research teams are working towards the improvementof ultrasound techniques for medical diagnostic applications, in order to have volumetricechographic images in real time. The unique way to approach this problem isto use a matrix array transducer and to develop an echographic system able to handlethousands of electronic channels. A volumetric echographic system is a hard task !During the past decades huge advances have been made in the field of ultrasound imagingfor medical diagnostic applications. Conventional echographic probes are based,by now, on the mature piezoelectric technology. Recently, alternative technologiesbased on different operating principles have been proposed. In particular, the siliconmicromachined capacitive ultrasonic transducer technology (cMUT) has shown to besuitable for the replacement of the current technology. The main benefits of cMUT technologycan be found in the silicon micromachining process, commonly used in microelectronics. In order to have real time volumetric images a two dimensional matrixtransducer must be used; the afore mentioned cMUT technology is well suited for thistype of new transducers. Roma Tre has a program to develop this kind of transducersbut, because their geometrical characteristics are strongly dependent on the structureof the echographic system used, a preliminary exploration must be made in order todefine its principal features. This activity entails a huge amount of end-to-end simulationsof the whole process, from signal acquisition to the final image, to assess the impactof design choices on diagnostic capabilities

CASPUR teamed up with two roman Universities, Sapienza and Roma Tre, later joinedby Tor Vergata and Foro Italico, to implement an integrated job placement system. Basingon expertises accumulated in past experiments, SOUL merges conventional approaches, like job placement offices, with a Web portal that realizes a virtual jobmarket-place. The system is designed from the outset to be extensible, as demonstratedby the additional module to manage students’ internships. As 15% of Italian graduatescome from the Universities involved in the project, this is a unique opportunity for experimentationand development of best practices to apply more spreadly. SOUL is alsoa platform for advanced technological experimentation, like automated scoring of curriculawith respect to job offerings, based on neural networks techniques
