Un sistema RFID in banda UHF per l'autoprestito in Biblioteca
Department of Physics and CASPUR have been starting, in the past 2 years, a collaborationin order to develop a new RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) system for automaticlibrary loan procedures. These systems (generally known as self-checkequipments) uses radio signals in the UHF frequency range to interact with antennas(passive tags) used to identify books. Users identification is made through special cardswith an embedded tag. The entire loan process is completely managed by users throughprograms which run on a PC (terminal) directly attached to the reader. In our project weused an approach different from current commercial solutions, that works with RFIDreader in the range of HF. We think in fact, that this new “technology” could be verypromising in the future for the enhancements it could bring vs the “old” one (e.g. formassive inventory of library items in a “single shot”, not permitted then using HF RFIDtechnology). In this report we not only demonstrate that UHF RFID readers can be usedinside libraries as effectively as HF RFID readers (despite the latter is a more mature andstable technology), but also illustrate a solution that makes use of UHF RFID componentswhich are relative simple to maintain and to upgrade, open for systems integration, web manageable and with an Ethernet port for direct local network connection. Usersinteractions with library loan system is performed through a simple Web interface on anetwork attached terminal. A software library fully compatible with SIP2, the protocolused by library management systems for automatic loan procedures is also available forInternet community. Currently a prototype of our solution is going to be installed in twolibraries of Università “La Sapienza” of Rome for testing procedures in real environments

Un microscopio computazionale per lo studio di materiali innovativi per il fotovoltaico del futuro
The importance of using photovoltaics (PVs) to obtain clean and reliable energy hasbeen widely recognized. The scientific research on new PV materials is crucial to identifynew approaches to the concept of solar energy conversion and to increase the photonversionefficiency. Among the different approaches for PV, the quantum dot (QD) solarcell is one of the most promising. A single layer QD consists of a distribution ofnanocrystals embedded into an amorphous dielectric matrix. It is in principle possibleto affect the optoelectronic properties of QD layers by controlling the morphology ofthe nanograins. The complex atomic scale structure of such materials makes it quitedifficult to predict theoretically their optoelectronic properties. The theoretical challengeis two-fold; on the one hand, it is necessary to generate large scale atomistic models;on the other hand, the corresponding electronic properties must be computed over alarge number of atoms. While the first issue can be coped with large-scale moleculardynamics (MD) simulations, the second issue is a major computational bottleneck andit requires a class of advanced algorithms for the electronic structure calculations inwhich the computational workload scales linearly with the number of atoms. Within acollaboration among CASPUR and the SLACS (Sardinian Laboratory for Computationalmaterials science) we have implemented a new numerical method to investigate theoptoelectronic properties of silicon based QD layers. By using such a theoretical frameworkit is possible to assist the design of new efficient materials for PV
Il Conferencing Service Center del CASPUR: un integratore di servizi per la comunicazione avanzata
In the past years, several relevant projects in education and communication environmenthave contributed to develop and deploy modern videoconference infrastructures. In this framework CASPUR is playing a significant role, promoting and diffusing videoconferencetechnologies among its scientific partners and public administration. ConferencingService Center (CSC) is an innovative solution for integrating communicationand collaboration services, which promotes audio media as the main communicationchannel. A CSC user gets benefits from audio and data communications using a virtualroom for his meetings, eliminating or lowering barriers of distance and cost of travel. In this way, CSC helps public and private organizations to improve efficiency of internalcommunication and to reduce costs. The CSC web portal service is accessible at http://csc.caspur.it, seven days a weekand 24 hours a day; through this portal, conferencing services can be planned, managedand controlled. It encompasses the following features:• Accounts management in organizational hierarchy• Services booking and scheduling• On line service management• Activity analysis and reportsAs far services are concerned, CSC comprises the following ones:• Audioconferencing: accessing a virtual room using a telephone for voice and a pcor mobile device for data• VideoConferencing: IP/ISDN based virtual rooms for audio and video conference• Webconferencing: a java application built to share data in combination with oneof the two services above• Webstreaming: a customizable live or on demand video broadcastFurther any technological consideration, teleconferencing and related travels reductioncontributes to lower CO2 production.Ing. Il modello di tasking in OpenMP
The widespread adoption of multicore processors in all kind of computing devices is springing interest for parallel computing, which is the only approach to achieve the promised performance boosts. Parallel computing is not easy, and the resulting complexity, which is usually tolerated in the computational science field, must be strictly controlled in commercial software life cycles. OpenMP is a widely supported industrial standard for parallel computing on multiprocessors systems. Its basic principles, simplicity and incremental approach, make it an extremely productive paradigm. Up to version 2.5, OpenMP didn’t directly support parallelization of algorithms in which more work is generated dynamically and with irregular patterns as data are processed. These algorithms are of growing relevance in the scientific realm, and are widespread in most commercial software. OpenMP 3.0 introduced a new tasking model, that allows work to be dynamically generated and assigned to idle processors. CASPUR was a very active contributor to the new model development
