No full textOpen source applications become more and more widespread against proprietary systems in every field. It is important to avoid mistakes that can compromise services and increase costs. This short contribution points to some elements that need attention when a cost-benefit analysis is undertaken before the choice of open source applications for libraries or e-publishing services.Sempre maggiore interesse destano in tutti i settori, anche in Italia, le possibili applicazioni informatiche open source, in alternativa ai software proprietari. È importante, dunque, far chiarezza per evitare errori che possono seriamente compromettere le funzionalità del servizio e generare spese impreviste. Questo breve articolo si pone l'unico obiettivo di individuare alcuni elementi ai quali prestare attenzione nel momento in cui si voglia intraprendere un'analisi costi-benefici riguardo all'adozione di uno o più applicativi open source per le biblioteche e i servizi di editoria elettronica

No full textBOA is the Milano-Bicocca University repository carried out in the context of the SURplus project in June 2008 in order to place in archives the whole scientific production of the University. With BOA the University aims at creating a complete and inter-workable database of all its scientific publications, a database from which it is possible to feed the remaining SURplus modules, to get consultation and bibliographic citations statistics, to extract information to insert into other databases.BOA (Bicocca Open Archive) è il repository dell'Università di Milano-Bicocca per l'archiviazione della produzione scientifica di Ateneo, creato nell'ambito del progetto SURplus nel giugno 2008. Con BOA l'Università si propone di creare una banca dati omnicomprensiva e interoperabile di tutte le pubblicazioni dell'Università di Milano-Bicocca, dalla quale sia possibile alimentare gli altri moduli di SURplus, ricavare statistiche di consultazione e citazioni bibliografiche ed estrarre informazioni da caricare su altre banche dati

No full textDoctoral theses often represent the upper edge of academic research activities. As such, they deserve the highest visibility and dissemination opportunities, for the benefit of their authors and the supporting institutions. Their impact would also contribute to prevent the marginalization of Italian research in the European and world-wide context. Changes in norms and rules are also driving universities towards automation of processes and adoption of digital formats. In this situation universities look for software solutions that can be integrated in their information environment, contribute to the automation of the archiving process and provide theses with high visibility on the net. CILEA fulfills these needs with the OA module of the SURplus suite, customized for the specific treatment of dissertations.Le tesi di dottorato rappresentano spesso la frontiera delle attività di ricerca di un ateneo e, in quanto tali, meritano la massima visibilità e diffusione, a beneficio degli autori e delle istituzioni che li sostengono, anche per evitare la marginalizzazione della ricerca italiana nel contesto europeo e mondiale. L'evoluzione della situazione normativa spinge inoltre nella direzione dell'automazione delle procedure e della disponibilità dei formati digitali. E’ in quest'ottica che sta maturando una crescente richiesta da parte degli atenei italiani di soluzioni software che possano integrarsi nel tessuto informativo istituzionale, contribuiscano all'automazione del processo di deposito delle tesi di dottorato e forniscano nel contempo alle stesse una maggiore visibilità in rete. A tale esigenze il CILEA risponde estendendo il modulo OA della suite SURplus alla gestione delle problematiche specifiche delle tesi

No full textIn this article we present the application of computational fluid dynamics analysis to the case of sail wind engi¬neering. In particular the context, the method and the perspectives of such approach are discussed referring to the largest CFD case ever performed on a Americas Cup size yacht. This work is the main output of an ongoing scientific collaboration among CILEA and academics and industrial partners concerning the applicability of CFD analysis to wind engineering design.In questo articolo viene presentato l’applicazione della fluidodinamica computazionale al caso della progettazione ingegneristica delle imbarcazioni a vela. In particolare il contesto, il metodo e le prospettive di questo metodo di indagine vengono discussi in relazione al più oneroso calcolo CFD mai affrontato nell’ambito delle imbarcazioni da regata di Coppa America
Il servizio di emeroteca virtuale al CASPUR ed il suo nuovo motore di ricerca
No full textCASPUR has been offering since 1999 a web based Digital Library service called “Emeroteca Virtuale” (EV), which guarantees full-text permanent access to scholarly scientific publications of five commercial publishers, the biggest ones in a worldwide context. Nowadays EV is a service accessed by more than 350.000 users, mostly researchers belonging to nearly 30 middle and south Italy universities and research bodies. Users can browse and search on this platform up to 8 million full text articles from 5.000 e-journals, mainly in Scientific-Technology-Medicine (STM) area. Since 1999 EV service is based on a commercial software called Science Direct, whose main functionalities are articles browsing and articles searching. This software is going to show its limits with such huge amount of searchable articles, especially when search times are concerned. This is why starting from the second half of 2008 CASPUR staff which is managing this digital library has planned a migration from Science Direct search engine, to a new one, chosen in the context of open source software: Lucene from Apache Software Foundation. Nowadays Lucene is used in many web based applications around the world, especially in the field of scientific digital libraries. Concerning EV service, Lucene integration with Science Server environments is going to end in the next few months. Exhaustive tests have been performed using the whole contents, giving really promising results, with a mean search time 10 to 100 shorter than Science Direct search response. This definitively states the choice of Lucene as a good search engine and represent a valid starting point for “Emeroteca Virtuale” whole service renovation
