    Discovery of the youngest sex chromosomes reveals first case of convergent co-option of ancestral autosomes in turtles.

    <p>Most turtle species possess temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), but genotypic sex determination (GSD) has evolved multiple times independently from the TSD ancestral condition. GSD in animals typically involves sex chromosomes, yet the sex chromosome system of only 9 out of 18 known GSD turtles has been characterized. Here, we combine comparative genome hybridization (CGH) and BAC clone fluorescent in situ hybridization (BAC FISH) to identify a macro-chromosome XX/XY system in the GSD wood turtle Glyptemys insculpta (GIN), the youngest known sex chromosomes in chelonians (8–20 My old). Comparative analyses show that GIN-X/Y is homologous to chromosome 4 of Chrysemys picta (CPI) painted turtles, chromosome 5 of Gallus gallus chicken, and thus to the X/Y sex chromosomes of Siebenrockiella crassicollis black marsh turtles. We tentatively assign the gene content of the mapped BACs from CPI chromosome 4 (CPI-4) to GIN-X/Y. Chromosomal rearrangements were detected in G. insculpta sex chromosome pair that co-localize with the male-specific region of GIN-Y and encompass a gene involved in sexual development (Wt1—a putative master gene in TSD turtles). Such inversions may have mediated the divergence of G. insculpta sex chromosome pair and facilitated GSD evolution in this turtle. Our results illuminate the structure, origin, and evolution of sex chromosomes in G. insculpta and reveal the first case of convergent co-option of an autosomal pair as sex chromosomes within chelonians. </p&gt

    Since the time of Sir Arthur Evans, scholars have recognized the important role played by women in Bronze Age Cretan society. Most scholars, however, minimize this role, as did Evans, and still conclude that the thro­ne at Knossos was meant for a priest‒king. Using the methodology of Archaeomythology, a discipline foun­ded by Archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, this paper will look at the role of women in all aspects of Bronze Age Cretan society, and demonstrate that —based on archaeological artefacts— history, and mythology, a plausi­ble and highly probable case can be made for a woman‒centered Bronze Age Crete

    My research proposal investigates a little known work by the American bibliophile and Johnson scholar, Alfred Edward Newton (1864-1940), entitled Dr Johnson: A Play (1923). The play has no modern reprints and had a modest circulation at the time of its publication. My hypothesis is that Dr Johnson: A Play is a very interesting product, though sadly overlooked by critical discourse. It can be approached from the vantage point of adaptation and afterlives studies, particularly as regards the influence and biographical rewritings of Samuel Johnson. However, to me the play is also clearly relevant within the intricate context of post-First World War nostalgia, which has been of special concern to such authors as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen so far. There is no systematic study of Dr Johnson: A Play and my inquiry would be of interest not only to the Johnson community and eighteenth-century scholars at large, but also to colleagues involved in the fields of adaptation studies and cultural transits

    Conoidean gastropods of the outer continental shelf and slope off Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula)

    More than 800 shells and specimens of 38 species belonging to several conoidean families have been found in the samples collected during several campaigns on the continental shelf and slope off Galicia (NW Spain). The most frequent species in the samples were Spirotropis confusa, Sorgenfreispira brachystoma, Micropleurotoma travailleuri and Oenopota graphica. Some of the species have only been found in samples from the continental shelf above 260 m depth (Comarmondia gracilis, Bela menkhorsti, Bela nuperrima, Mangelia costata, M. costulata, M. tenuicosta, Sorgenfreispira brachystoma and Cyrillia aequalis). Eight species have been found below 1500 m depth (Aforia sp., Spirotropis confusa, Oenopota cf. tenuicostata, Gymnobela subaraneosa, Neopleurotomoides callembryon, Pleurotomella cf. benedicti, and two species described as new, belonging to the genera Spirotropis and Neopleurotomoides). Furthermore, fossil shells, fragments or shells in poor condition of another eight species have been also found in the samples

    Three Iberian populations of Oxychilus discovered over the past decade are described, all of which are similar to O. navarricus (syn. O. helveticus (Blum, 1881)) in shell characters. Populations from a single locality in Estremadura (western central Portugal) and from Prov. Huelva (SW. Spain) were found to differ from O. navarricus in lacking the black edge to the mantle and lacking the characteristic smell of raw garlic emitted when the animals are handled. Study of the genital anatomy revealed that these populations differ from each other and from O. navarricus in structures on the inner wall of the proximal part of the penis. Hence, they are named as O. alpedrizensis n. sp. and O. aracenensis n. sp. respectively. A third population from the base of a sink-hole in limestone hills near Ranero in Prov. Vizcaya (Basque Country, north-west Spain) resembled O. navarricus in emitting the smell of garlic and in some shell characters but differed in its shells having much lower spires and a keeled periphery to the inner whorls, lacking the whitish base to the shell, and having paler mantle coloration. Nevertheless, they did not differ from O. navarricus in genital anatomy, characteristic specimens of that species were present nearby above the sinkhole, and one specimen from the sink-hole had a high shell spire but pale mantle colour. Consequently, the sink-hole population is regarded as representing a striking localised form conspecific with O. navarricus
