Enhancing the analysis of medical data with graph neural networks

    No full text
Medical datasets often pose unique challenges, including high dimensionality with low sample sizes (HDLSS), heterogeneous features, and frequent missing values. In such settings, conventional machine learning models tend to overfit and struggle with generalization. We propose and end-to-end graph-based architecture specifically designed to address these issues. By applying structured message passing across feature-sample and sample-sample interactions, our model captures relational inductive biases potentially overlooked by standard approaches. Experiments across five medical datasets show how the proposed model outperforms existing alternatives, particularly when data is scarce. L’anàlisi incorpora criteris econòmics, ambientals i estratègics. This master’s thesis aims to comparatively analyse two strategic investment alternatives to address the structural electricity generation deficit faced by Catalonia. This deficit, exacerbated by the low penetration of renewable energy and the strong dependence on external sources, puts the region’s energy sovereignty at risk and hinders the achievement of climate commitments established by the 2030 Agenda and Catalonia’s energy roadmap, PROENCAT 2050. The two alternatives analysed follow different approaches: on the one hand, the construction of a Very High Voltage (VHV) transmission line, promoted by the company Forestalia, which would connect renewable energy generation facilities located in Aragón with the Begues substation in Catalonia; on the other hand, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the rooftops of industrial buildings in the province of Barcelona, promoted by the Provincial Council, advocating for a distributed generation model. The analysis incorporates economic, environmental, and strategic criteria. From an economic perspective, both deterministic and stochastic models (Monte Carlo simulation) have been applied, allowing for the integration of uncertainty associated with variables such as electricity prices, inflation, and maintenance costs. The environmental analysis considers land use, biodiversity, and landscape impact. Strategically, each option is evaluated in terms of its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Catalonia’s energy model. The results show that, although the VHV line may reduce the deficit in the short term, distributed generation offers a more favourable overall assessment: it generates energy locally, reduces external dependency, minimizes environmental impacts, and enjoys strong social acceptance. For all these reasons, it is considered the most coherent option with the energy future that Catalonia seeks to build.

First order explicit time integration scheme with large time steps for parabolic problems using irregular grids

    No full text
We present a fast first order explicit time integration scheme for solving parabolic problems in mechanics via standard numerical methods in space using irregular grids, such as unstructured finite element meshes, or grids containing elements or cells of very different sizes. The new scheme extends one of the explicit FIC-Time (EFT) integration methods derived by the authors in [23] that allow considerable larger time steps than the forward-Euler (FE) scheme. The new EFT scheme overcomes the limitations in the time step size of explicit time integration schemes for irregular grids containing large and small elements. A variable time step is used for eliminating the oscillations near Dirichlet boundaries when large time steps are used. The advantages of the new EFT scheme versus the FE scheme are shown in one-, two- and three-dimensional transient heat conduction problems using irregular finite element grids. The authors thank Rainald Löhner for many useful discussions.

    No full text
This article presents the design process and structural analysis for Halls 3, 4, and 6 commissioned by Fira de la Gran Vía in Barcelona. Its objective is to document the complete development of a real structure—from the initial briefing to final execution—highlighting key decisions related to cost, quality, construction speed, and standardization. Rather than simply describing the finished building, the article compares alternative solutions considered at each stage and explains the rationale behind the choices made. Close collaboration between the architectural and structural teams has resulted in a cost-effective solution that has remained relevant twenty-five years after completion. Each structural component is examined in detail, considering its behavior, preliminary sizing, fabrication, transportation, and rapid on-site assembly, all essential under the client’s demanding schedule. It also describes how specific structural details were resolved under project constraints, including instances that required unconventional approaches. Finally, it discusses the role of prestressed longitudinal frames as a strategy for reducing steel consumption. This article underscores the value of integrated architectural and structural thinking in shaping the building from the ground up.Peer Reviewed9 - Indústria, Innovació i Infraestructura12 - Producció i Consum Responsables13 - Acció per al ClimaPostprint (published version

The assessment of litter quality in broiler chickens: validity, inter-assessor reliability, and intra-assessor repeatability of three visual scoring systems

    No full text
This study evaluated the validity, inter-assessor reliability and intra-assessor repeatability of three visual scoring systems for litter quality, one known as the Welfare Quality Assessment Protocol© and two complementary systems for friability and humidity developed by the ClassyFarm initiative.2. In 6 rooms of an experimental barn, 2450 medium-growing broiler chickens were reared on coarse sawdust litter until they reached a body weight of 2.2 kg at 43 days of age, with a stocking density of 33 kg/m2.3. Sixty-six litter samples were analysed for litter moisture at two different time points during the broiler chickens' production cycle, and were visually scored using the three systems, two consecutive times, by 7 assessors to analyse their validity, inter-reliability and intra-repeatability according to the litter moisture level.4. The three resulting scores were correlated with the litter moisture (p < 0.001) and correlations were stronger when the litter moisture was above 35%. Similarly, inter-assessor reliability and intra-assessor repeatability were better for all three scoring systems when litter moisture was above 35% than when it was below 35%.5. The ClassyFarm Friability system was the most reliable regardless of litter moisture level. The ClassyFarm Humidity system was the least reliable and repeatable when the litter moisture was below 35%. The Welfare Quality scoring system lay between the two ClassyFarm systems considering inter-assessor reliability, but was as repeatable as the ClassyFarm Friability system.Postprint (published version

SPH-based modeling of a direct-drive WEC in extreme waves and currents

    No full text
In this work, we present a fully Lagrangian framework specifically tailored to host point absorber WECs under violent wave–current excitations. Within the open-source DualSPHysics framework, based on the Weakly Compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method, a multipurpose wave tank is modeled to simulate extreme wave trains developing over uniform currents, by adopting the focusing strategy and high-order solutions. Moreover, a novel power take-off (PTO) model is implemented within the loop to unlock a swift characterization of different energetic proxy models. An Uppsala University WEC model is firstly validated under extreme sea states, and such framework is eventually tasked with the simulation of combined wave–current extreme events. The outcome we document suggests that complex buoy dynamics can develop in wave–current fields, with high sensitivity to the sea state representation: focused waves propagating over equally headed currents tend to maximize the line stretching and to develop extremely nonlinear kinematics. Floater displacement and anchoring tension patterns show no direct correlation with the wave–current layout and PTO configurations. Contrary to established knowledge, strong PTO damping does not always guarantee lower system stress. An all-around numerical strategy, leveraging high-fidelity modeling is presented, owning the necessary flexibility to anticipate both operational and ultimate limit state load combinations, accommodating increasing degrees of nonlinearity.S.
