Sharing Your Research Data: URRR and Other Repositories
This webinar focuses on how to share data and scholarship via web-based repositories including subject-specific providers and the University of Rochester Research Repository (URRR). It also relays information on how to prepare one's data for submission with tips on creating file naming conventions, data cleaning, and copyright considerations. Finally a brief instructional overview of submitting to URRR is presented. Connecting Metadata and Digital Assets: ArchivesSpace and Preservica
Session Description: Bringing together a metadata management system like ArchivesSpace and a digital asset management system like Preservica so that they can communicate with each other can be a complicated process. This presentation will discuss how the University of Rochester developed their workflow to create digital objects within ArchivesSpace efficiently at scale, as well as provide access to the digital surrogates or born digital assets that researchers want to have access to. This process utilizes the catalog sync option that Preservica developed, and specifically discusses how to create SIPs suitable for ingest into Preservica, after which they are synced with ArchivesSpace. These SIPs are difficult to create manually but can be generated more easily with programmatic intervention like Python scripting. This workflow was ultimately unlocked by using the Digitization Work Order Plugin developed by New York University Libraries to pull out the necessary data from ArchivesSpace to satisfy all the needs of the Preservica catalog sync. Ultimately this allows for the import of digital assets into Preservica in such a way that the metadata held in ArchivesSpace could be pulled over to Preservica (and then kept in sync over time) as well as populate ArchivesSpace with digital objects associated with each relevant archival object. These Python scripts were then also turned into a small graphical utility, opening the possibility of leveraging these workflows without having to work in the command line, and instead just being able to press a few buttons to generate SIPs that satisfy both platform’s needs.Presented virtually at the ArchivesSpace Virtual Member Forum on March 27, 2024 from 2:05 to 2:35 PM Eastern Time.PowerPoint presentation is of a very large file size due to embedded video providing demo for software described in session.</p
Data and R Code for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination study in the Dominican Republic manuscript.
The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in approximately 7 million deaths and a historic vaccination effort, with over 13.6 billion doses administered. Despite this, understanding of immune responses in vulnerable populations, such as transplant recipients (TR) and hemodialysis patients (HD), remains limited, especially outside the US and Europe. To address this gap, we analyzed blood samples and deidentified data from the Instituto Nacional de Coordinación de Trasplante (INCORT) in The Dominican Republic, measuring antibody levels to SARS-CoV-2 post-infection and vaccination -BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) and Sinovac-CoronaVac (Sinovac)- in TR, HD, and healthy controls (CO). Using a fluorescent multiplex assay (mPlex-CoV) and mixed-effects modeling, we assessed variations in anti-S, anti-RBD, and anti-N IgG antibodies. Results indicate that the CO group experienced an early peak in anti-S and anti-RBD antibodies, followed by stabilization. In contrast, the TR and HD groups showed a slower, gradual increase in antibodies. Despite fluctuations in the HD group, both TR and HD maintained high anti-S and anti-RBD IgG levels, indicating a back-boosting effect from vaccination. However, elevated anti-N IgG levels in TR and HD suggest potential reinfections. Additionally, prior SARS-CoV-2 infection led to higher anti-S IgG levels, with BNT162b2 associated with higher anti-S IgG and CoronaVac with higher anti-N IgG levels. These findings highlight the variability in antibody responses and the need for targeted public health strategies to diverse immunological profiles.</p

This presentation material supports a workshop presented at the 2024 RIT & UR Staff Conference.The University of Rochester River Campus Libraries (RCL) DEIA in Collections team will host a panel discussion on the numerous strategies, challenges, and lessons encountered while attempting to develop an inclusive collection. This panel will put an emphasis on audience collaboration and brainstorming. Lindsey will examine the ways in which academic libraries and public libraries coincide and diverge in diversity of collecting and how we can strengthen that work within academic libraries, from the perspective of a former public librarian.</p
A Compendium of Ethical Issues in Generative AI
The Collingridge Dilemma posits that the impact of a given technology will not be understood until long after it has become too difficult to change. If generative AI (GenAI) has not already reached this inflection point, it will soon. Tracking the ethical implications of GenAI is challenging to library stakeholders because of its rapid technological advancement and proliferation. This presentation will attempt to support librarians by providing a broad scan of ethical issues inherent in AI generated content, rather than focusing on one or two major issues. Topics discussed will include data and algorithmic bias, plagiarism, misinformation, censorship, environmental impact, equity, and more exotic issues like cyber-religion. Each ethical issue will include a description as well as documented examples. By exploring with this environmental scan, we can more accurately strategize and frame the library profession's stance towards GenAI. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on how to mitigate ethical concerns with GenAI, whether or not it has already passed the Collingridge inflection point. This is a data visualization project based on nutrient profile data submitted for the 2023-24 Data Bloom contest at River Campus Libraries.Author's statement: My visualization shows an expanded nutrient profile data for almost 8,000 food items, from microwave dinners to fresh fruits and veggies. This visualization was designed to convey at-a-glance the nutrient makeup of food by weight to help users make healthier choices.
