In this brief workshop, we discussed our own SDG-related initiatives and helped participants brainstorm how they can champion the SDGs at RIT and the University of Rochester.</p

    This is a data visualization project based on URMC data submitted for the 2023-24 Data Bloom contest at River Campus Libraries.Author's statement: the following visualization depicts the flow patterns of blood within an aortic arch that underwent surgical procedures for the congenital heart defect, Coarctation of the aorta. The simulation employs different colors to illustrate the various velocities as particles of blood move through the arch. Under an IRB (Internal Review Board) approved study, clinical data was supplied by the University of Rochester Medical Center. This data included aortic arch anatomy, heart rates and flow data from cardiac MRI scans, as well as blood pressures from outpatient visits. With this data, we were able to calculate the flow ratios through all the head vessels and descending aorta. Additionally, all simulations were conducted using normal blood parameters for density and viscosity. Flow simulations through the aortic arch was executed using ANSYS Fluent, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFO) commercial software package. Additionally, the patient-specific geometry was extracted from MRI scans using the program, Slicer.</p

    Introduction: "One may easily find music in the poetry of Kenneth Patchen, for the poet crafted works that lend themselves to performance. If the lyricism of the words -- the prosody of a simple line, spread across a painted page -- fail to remind the reader of song, an evening with recordings of Patchen himself reciting to live Jazz accompaniment will convince the nonbeliever of the inherent, irrepressible musicality of the poet's language.Many musicians, contemporaries and latter-day voices alike, have extracted their own song from works by Patchen.     Paper submitted to fulfill HIS 252 course, Cultural History of the United States, 1876-Present taught by Professor Joan Rubin, Fall 2011Introduction: "Before there were comic books, there were dime novels. Printed on cheap paper, dime novels brought outrageous genre stories - tales of cowboys, detectives, pirates, soldiers, and damsels in distress - to the American public for little cost. Dime novels steadily grew in popularity throughout the 1800s, but suffered from a gradual decline in quality and popularity in the last quarter of the century. Many of these books were produced in fiction factories - writers and editors collaboratively producing texts, which finally were published under pseudonyms - but a number of individual writers rose to prominence. One such author, Ned Buntline, was particularly well known, and his most famous work, The Black Avenger of the Spanish Main, became the iconic pirate yarn of his age. From a thematic standpoint, Black Avenger is notable for depicting piracy as a temporary release from normal codes of behavior. The dataset reflects natural language usage from a diverse group of speakers, capturing various phrasings, inflections, and contexts.     Honing Information Literacy Skills with GenAI: Building a Modular Lesson

    Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) tools such as ChatGPT have proliferated throughout the educational landscape faster than many educators can adapt. These emerging trends have made it essential for library users to hone their information literacy skills. In response, the presenters have developed a set of dynamic lessons focused on the intersection between GenAI and information literacy as a means to develop user skills. This session was designed in a ‘plug and play’ format to account for multiple instructional settings, relevant frameworks, and pedagogical methods. The resulting lesson includes three active learning activities, tied to outcomes from ACRL’s information literacy framework. The module was shared via a staff intranet to allow other library staff members to utilize and adapt these activities without needing extensive GenAI expertise.
