    During the summers of 2022 through 2025, high school students from across the country have come together at the University of Rochester’s Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X to explore and experiment with XR technologies. This two-week program welcomes participants of all experience levels, guiding them in creating their own VR experiences. Students begin by learning XR fundamentals and brainstorming project ideas, then progress to hands-on practice with tools like Blender and Unity. To support continued learning, we’ve included free, linked resources designed to empower students to build their skills independently.This record includes the following program slide decks:Intro To XR: learn about XR key terms, the history behind the technology, Studio X, and what this project will focus on.Design Thinking: practice the design thinking process to build your experience.Intro to Blender: practice the basics of blender with a challenge and non-player character creation.Intro to Meshes and Materials: make your non-player character models come to life with this step-by-step instruction on materials.Intro to Unity: learn about and how to use Unity and build your environment.Intro to Unity and VR: bring Unity and VR hardware together and add interactions to your experience.Critical Discussion of XR and Digital Literacy: learn about how users interact with XR vis-a-vis empathy and embodiment.Also included are handouts for the workshop's Design Thinking section and the required Unity project.     This visualization is a dashboard (2 pages), but the focus is on page 1, where there are 3 visuals, a word cloud, bubble chart and a bar chart, that are completely interactive (like every single visual can be interacted with to change the entire dashboard), along with selectable filters, you can use these to see real time, correlations between ingredients and cuisines, and visualize what cuisine leans towards what kind of ingredients, and even variants of specific ingredients. The second page contains, filters that show you more numerical data, where you can see side by side comparisons, of ingredients within two separate cuisines, or even the extent to which, two cuisines can use the same ingredient.This viz was submitted as part of the Data Bloom 2024 Viz competition.This viz was created using PowerBI and is based on the following data source: Kaggle - https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/kaggle/recipe-ingredients-dataset/dataPowerBI or a free viewer is required to render and view the full dynamic visualization within the PBIX file.</p

    Peak Power Characterization of Ultrashort Optical Pulses

    Ultrashort optical pulses have extremely high peak powers, making them useful for research in nonlinear optics, biomedical imaging, and micromachining. However, directly measuring peak power is challenging due to its short pulse duration. This research focuses on evaluating and comparing three nonlinear optical methods for estimating the peak power of femtosecond laser pulses: second harmonic generation (SHG), two-photon absorption (TPA), and nonlinear spectral broadening. SHG was measured using a BBO crystal, while TPA was measured via photocurrent in a silicon photodiode. Spectral broadening was analyzed using a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) model in MATLAB and compared to experimental measurements through a 13-meter metrocor fiber. Initial results qualitatively confirm the correlation between peak power and each nonlinear effect, with future work focused on extracting quantitative peak power values and comparing the accuracy of each method.</p
