Preservica Metadata Application Profile
This profile was created to help the University of Rochester Libraries maintain consistent metadata standards throughout the digital collections contained within Preservica. Qualified Dublin Core was selected as the metadata schema because of its ease of use, adaptability, and interoperability.This document is meant to be a reference guide for catalogers/metadata specialists and to showcase the available descriptive options for library staff interested in housing a digital collection in Preservica. Omeka S Digital Projects Service Level Agreement
This document outlines the roles and responsibilities for all those stakeholders involved with utilizing the Projects instance of Omeka S. Omeka S is a web content management system (CMS) that allows users to create digital exhibits or projects. The Digital Projects instance will be used for already existing research projects that require unique metadata and which use materials that are part of the University of Rochester Libraries’ unique collections. This instance may also be used for future faculty research projects where the metadata or descriptions are an integral part of the research output beyond a typical exhibit/curatorial approach. Within the scope of this instance will also be digital projects that require the development of/augmentation of plug-ins beyond the generally available options in Omeka S. Stakeholders include digital exhibit creators (curators, students, and library staff), Digital Initiatives and Digital Scholarship who maintain the servers hosting Omeka S as well as maintain the application and its modules.</p

Investigating the Relationship of LINE-1 Expression and SIRT6 Rescue Across Rodent Species
Aging-associated inflammation, or ‘inflammaging” is a driver of multiple age-associated diseases. Cyclic GMP-AMP Synthase (cGAS) is a cytosolic DNA sensor that functions to activate interferon response upon detecting viral DNA in the cytoplasm. cGAS contributes to inflammaging by responding to endogenous signals such as damaged DNA or LINE1 (L1) cDNA which forms in aged cells. While cGAS knockout mice are viable their aging has not been examined. Unexpectedly, we found that cGAS knockout mice exhibit accelerated aging phenotype associated with induction of inflammation. Transcription of L1 elements was increased in both cGAS knockout mice and in cGAS siRNA knockdown cells associated with high levels of cytoplasmic L1 DNA and expression of ORF1 protein. Cells from cGAS knockout mice showed increased chromatin accessibility and decreased DNA methylation on L1 transposons. Stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED) showed that cGAS forms nuclear condensates that co-localize with H3K9me3 heterochromatin marks, and H3K9me3 pattern is disrupted in cGAS knockout cells. Taken together these results suggest a previously undescribed role for cGAS in maintaining heterochromatin on transposable elements. We propose that loss of cGAS leads to loss of chromatin organization, de-repression of transposable elements and induction of inflammation resulting in accelerated aging.</p

Rules to Infinity: The Normative Role of Mathematics in Scientific Explanation
One of the central aims of science is to provide explanations of natural phenomena. What role does mathematics play in achieving this aim? How does mathematics contribute to the explanatory power of science? Rules to Infinity defends the thesis that mathematics contributes to the explanatory power of science by expressing conceptual rules that allow for the transformation of empirical descriptions. It claims that mathematics should not be thought of as describing, in any substantive sense, an abstract realm of eternal mathematical objects, as traditional Platonists have thought. This view, which Mark Povich calls "mathematical normativism," is updated with contemporary philosophical tools, which are used to form the argument that normativism is compatible with mainstream semantic theory. This allows the normativist to accept that there are mathematical truths, while resisting the Platonistic idea that there exist abstract mathematical objects that explain such truths. There is a distinction between scientific explanations that are in some sense distinctively mathematical--those that explain natural phenomena in some uniquely mathematical way--and those that are only standardly mathematical, and Povich defends a particular account of this distinction. Rules to Infinity compares normativism to other prominent views in the philosophy of mathematics, such as neo-Fregeanism, fictionalism, conventionalism, and structuralism, and offers an entry point into debates at the forefront of philosophy of science and mathematics as it defends its novel positions.Oxford University PressISBN: 9780197679012</p
Turkish Mothers Reasoning and Judgment around Autonomy
We surveyed 256 mostly well-educated mothers (M = 36.61 years, SD = 4.66) of 4- to 8-year-olds in Turkey about hypothetical and real-life personal, prudential, and conventional issues. In both contexts, Turkish mothers generally reported granting their children autonomy over personal issues while maintaining authority over prudential and conventional matters, based primarily on concerns about potential harm to the child or others. Higher SES mothers reported providing more autonomy, less control, and having less conflict with their child than lower SES mothers. Mothers reported little use of punitive strategies to resolve conflicts, but negotiation and persuasion were used predominantly by higher SES mothers. Boys were granted more decision-making autonomy than girls, and preschool girls were viewed as more attention-seeking than boys, a pattern that reversed at school age. Turkish mothers balanced granting autonomy and maintaining authority, with higher SES mothers more supportive of autonomy and negotiation in conflicts than lower SES mothers.</p
Walt Whitman Onwards and Outwards
Students in two of Professor Robert Westbrook's courses in American intellectual history, "The American Mind, 1600-1865" (History 267) and "The American Mind, 1865-1990" (History 268), use manuscript materials as part of a research assignment. This assignment, called "Other People's Mail," requires that students transcribe a document and write an introduction to it, placing the document in its context and suggesting the ways in which it bears on significant themes in the course. The student essay along with transcriptions of the documents and images of the originals letters, have been digitized and included. Individual scanned page images are supplied, along with them compiled into a PDF together for convenience.Please Note: All rights regarding the papers rest with the authors.
