Time is honey
Time is honey While working conditions have improved over the centuries, with more autonomy and flexibility, workload and burnout have paradoxically increased. In this abbreviated version of my inaugural lecture, I propose that the pursuit of meaning, and freedom can lead to self-exploitation, exhaustion, and a weakened sense of community. I argue that neoliberal ideals, emphasizing individual freedom over social connections, are central to current workplace issues. Specifically, society’s focus on freedom has driven individuals to structure their lives around economic efficiency, effectively becoming “entrepreneurs of the self”. This shift forces people to prioritize productivity over social bonds, which may lead to burnout. I advocate for a rethinking of autonomy, which balances individual and social needs. In my future work, I aim to develop a new concept of autonomy that acknowledges both social and individual aspects of human nature. I also challenge the current view of leisure as merely serving work and call for a broader understanding of work and productivity. My vision for a post-work society views individuals as holistic beings, with lives outside of their paid jobs that are equally valuable and deserving of attention. This shift would promote sustainable work practices and a more balanced, fulfilling life for everyone.</p
p-adic adelic metrics and quadratic Chabauty I
We give a new construction of p-adic heights on varieties over number fields using p-adic Arakelov theory. In analogy with Zhang’s construction of real-valued heights in terms of adelic metrics, these heights are given in terms of p-adic adelic metrics on line bundles. In particular, we describe a construction of canonical p-adic heights on abelian varieties and we show that we recover the canonical Mazur–Tate height and, for Jacobians, the height constructed by Coleman and Gross. Our main application is a new and simplified approach to the quadratic Chabauty method for the computation of rational points on certain curves over the rationals, by pulling back the canonical height on the Jacobian with respect to a carefully chosen line bundle. We show that our construction allows us to reprove, without using p-adic Hodge theory or arithmetic fundamental groups, several results due to Balakrishnan and Dogra. Our method also extends to primes p of bad reduction. One consequence of our work is that, for any canonical height (p-adic or ℝ-valued) on an abelian variety (and hence on pullbacks to other varieties), the local contribution at a finite prime q can be constructed using q-analytic methods.</p
Assessing the internal consistency reliability of ecological momentary assessment measures:Insights from the WARN-D study
Intensive longitudinal research has become increasingly popular in the social and clinical sciences in recent years. However, this popularity has brought about many challenges for both methodological and empirical researchers, including challenges regarding measurement. In this preregistered study, we are particularly interested in the assessment of the reliability when multiple items are used to measure the same construct in intensive longitudinal data. This is important because reliability estimates are necessary (albeit not sufficient) to evaluate the quality of measures. Here, we evaluate the internal consistency reliability of scales used during Stage 2 of the WARN-D study, a 3-month period of daily and weekly measurements. The WARN-D study is a prospective 2-year study of approximately 1,750 students conducted in the Netherlands, aiming at building an early warning system for depression. Stage 2 includes 3 months of data on positive and negative affect measured four times a day and depression and anxiety measured once a week. To assess the reliability of each scale, we use six different statistical approaches including three simpler approaches that estimate the reliability at the between-person and within-person levels and three idiographic approaches that estimate person-specific reliability coefficients. This article also serves as a tutorial guide for substantive researchers, providing annotated code to facilitate estimating and reporting the reliability of ecological momentary assessment measures. We encourage all researchers to report the reliability of their data when applying the introduced statistical approaches, contributing to a collaborative effort toward developing more reliable measures in psychological and behavioral science. Coronary lipid burden indices predict non-culprit major adverse cardiac events independently of novel LDL estimates:Insights from the LRP study
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary Lipid Burden measured by NIRS-IVUS (maxLCBI4mm > 400) predicts non-culprit major adverse cardiac events (MACE) but has shown weak correlation with traditional low-density lipoprotein (LDL) measures. We derived novel LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and LDL-triglyceride (eLDL-TG) estimates and evaluated their relationship with maxLCBI4mm.METHOD: In the Lipid-Rich Plaque study (2014-2016), participants, LDL-C, and eLDL-TG were estimated with National Institutes of Health equations, and coronary segment maxLCBI4mm was quantified by an independent Core lab. Linear regression models adjusted for possible confounders were used to assess the relationship between the LDL estimates and maxLCBI4mm. Kaplan-Meier curves evaluated non-culprit MACE rates by maxLCBI4mm ≤ 400 vs. >400, stratified by LDL-C (≥/<70 mg/dL) and eLDL-TG (≥/<60th percentile). Cox proportional hazards model assessed the risk of non-culprit MACE by maxLCBI4mm and the effect of LDL estimate groups.RESULTS: In the 626 evaluable patients (410 with maxLCBI4mm ≤ 400 and 216 > 400), there was no association between baseline LDL estimates and maxLCBI4mm (p > 0.05). Patients with maxLCBI4mm > 400 had a significantly increased risk of non-culprit MACE over 2 years with a hazard ratio of 1.67 (1·02-2.74, p = 0.043), with no interaction with LDL estimate groups. The prognostic value of maxLCBI4mm > 400 also persisted independently of LDL-C trajectory.CONCLUSION: Novel LDL estimates have a role in cardiovascular risk assessment but no association with lipid-rich plaque burden indices. Regardless of LDL-C or eLDL-TG, maxLCBI4mm predicts non-culprit events, capturing a broader spectrum of residual risk than LDL measures alone.</p
Preserving Privacy in Cloud-Based Data-Driven Stabilization
In recent years, we have observed three significant trends in control systems: a renewed interest in data-driven control design, the abundance of Cloud computational services, and the importance of preserving privacy for the system under control. Motivated by these factors, this work investigates privacy-preserving outsourcing for the design of a stabilizing controller for unknown linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. The main objective of this research is to preserve the privacy of the system dynamics by designing an outsourcing mechanism. To achieve this goal, we propose a scheme that combines transformation-based techniques and robust data-driven control design methods. The scheme preserves the privacy of both the open-loop and closed-loop system matrices while stabilizing the system under control. The scheme applies to both data with and without disturbance and is lightweight in terms of computational overhead compared to cryptography-based methods. Numerical investigations for a case study demonstrate the impacts of our mechanism and its role in hindering malicious adversaries from achieving their goals.</p

Modulation of triarylhydrazone photoswitching efficiency through heteroaryl variations
Triarylhydrazones (TAHZs) complement the mosaic of the recently discovered P-type diarylhydrazone photoswitches. They typically exhibit higher molar absorptivities and operate under light of longer wavelengths while preserving the attractive features of diarylhydrazones such as the excellent addressability and extraordinary thermal stability of both of its isomers. However, TAHZs often suffer from low quantum yields of Z-to-E photoisomerization due to the relatively strong excited-state intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) in the Z isomer. Although the presence of IHB ensures the large separation of the absorption maxima, it simultaneously leads to competing processes that reduce the efficiency of Z-to-E photoisomerization. Here, we present a strategy for reducing the IHB strength through varying the heteroaryls, which significantly increases the efficiency of Z-to-E photoisomerization, preserving sufficient addressability owing to the reduced intensity of the S0-S1 transition accompanied by the emergence of bright higher excited states of the E isomer.</p
