The lumbar curve in man and the apes : with an account of the topographical anatomy of the chimpanzee, orang-utan, and gibbon : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is a quarter binding from the Winkler Center that features plates comparing the lumbar curve of men and apes. The binding consists of black cloth along the spine and dark beige paper covering the boards. Both the upper and lower covers have printing in black printer’s ink. The textblock consists of gatherings sewn through the fold, on two recessed cords. The lower portion of the textblock consists of a series of plates hinged to the textblock. While most of the hinges are sewn on the two recessed cords, the last section of plates appear to be oversewn. There are several foldout plates hinged together with white cloth. Only the top edge of the textblock is trimmed. The primary support of the textblock is a light beige wove paper and the text is printed in black ink. The primary support of the plates is a thick light beige wove paper. Virgin Mary with visual metaphors : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This item is a new acquisition of the DAAP Library teaching collection. The items in this collection are meant to be used for teaching purposes and exhibition. This is a single paper folio from a Book of Hours that appears to have been torn from the book itself. The folio shows a representation of the Virgin Mary with visual metaphors on the recto, and text and small miniatures on the verso. The primary support is a light beige laid paper, and the text is printed in black and red ink. This is a full leather tightback binding. This volume belongs to the Archives and Rare Books Library. This volume has minimal gold tooling on the spine. This book was brought to the Preservation Lab, along with a number of others, to receive surrogates for upcoming exhibition. Of interest in this particular volume is the flyleaf which features T.H. Ancient Scottish Weapons/ a series of drawings by James Drummond; with introduction & descriptive notes by Joseph Anderson is an 1881 George Waterson & Sons imprint bound in a laced-case quarter leather binding. The plates are chromolithographs, with black and red printer's ink as text. The frontispiece notes that five hundred copies were printed for sale, noting this book is number 61. The book measures approximately 41.8 cm high, 32.9 cm wide, and 5.1 cm deep. Views of Cincinnati : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This item is a small accordion style book featuring printed images of iconic Cincinnati buildings as well as an index of all the Adolph Wittemann’s Souvenir Albums. It is bound in red cloth binding with the title stamped in black on the font cover, and floral decoration stamped in black on both the front and back covers. The pastedowns show paper a geometric shape printed in black ink. The text block is composed of two sections. The first section is the accordion section, which the images of Cincinnati buildings with text captions printed in black ink onto a beige, moderately thick, very smooth wove paper, with yellowish boarders around the images. The second section is the index of all the author’s souvenir albums similar to this one, which features text printed in black ink onto three sheets of beige, medium thickness, smooth wove paper that have been tipped together along the spine edge
Anthologia Graeca cum versione Latina Hugonis Grotii [Volume 2] : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is volume two of a five volume set from the Classics Library. Four of the five volumes came to the Lab for treatment and housing. The first volume, the only volume that did not come to the Lab, was previously rebound in a commercial, Buckram library binding. The four volumes with the original bindings all have half leather bindings with marbled paper covering the boards. The marbled paper is a stone pattern on all four volumes, though not identical. Of these four volumes, this volume is the only volume that has its original leather spine, though it is fully detached. The text block is trimmed and the edges are sprinkled. The text is sewn on recessed cords. The primary support is a light beige wove paper and the media is a black printer’s ink. This book was brought to the Preservation Lab, along with a number of others, to receive surrogates for upcoming exhibition. The text block consists of gatherings sewn through the fold on five raised cords. The edges of the text block are trimmed and marbled with a stoned pattern. There are sewn-on colored endbands.
