    Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam : Preservation Lab Treatment Report

    This is a book about mystic Sufi poetry, attributed to the 11th century poet anmathematician Omar Khayyam. This book was first translated in 1859 by the Englishman Edward FitzGerald and has been a source of controversy throughout the years regarding the authenticity of Khayyam’s authorship and the liberties FitzGerald took in translation. This information was provided by the previous Head of the University of Cincinnati Archives and Rare Books Library, Kevin Grace.     This is a 1929 sample book of playing cards from the Gibson Art Company, which contains actual card samples mounted to the folios. The object consists of two large loose folios, with a green limp paper cover. There are three‐hole punches along the spine where it was likely originally bound together. The sample cards remain attached throughout, and the folio supports are in fair condition.     This is a vellum half folio from a medieval manuscript entitled Breviary, according to the dealer’s catalog. It came to the Lab housed, yet unattached or supported, in a double window matting system with a decorative gold border on the recto. This matting system is hinged together with a shiny, white tape and has graphite inscriptions of the mat measurements, along with a vendor label (“Charles Edwin Puckett”) adhered to the inside of the mat. No treatment is needed at this time; however, a more supportive and protective matting system is needed for future exhibition and long-term storage of this half folio.View Catalog Record: http://uclid.uc.edu/record=b799755

    This book was previously triaged and stabilized during a minor water disaster in 2019. The book is a half leather binding with marbled paper covering the boards. The textblock consists of wove paper and black printer’s ink. The textblock is sewn on recessed cords, and the sewing remains intact.     This item is a new aquisiotion of the DAAP teaching collection. The items in this collection are meant to be handled and used for teaching and exhibition. This is an engraving by Master of the Die, who was born in the early 16th century, and was a pupil of Marc Antonio Raimondi. Master of the Die worked in Rome from 1532 to 1550. The engraving shows Apollo shooting a phython with an arrow. The engraving in on a light beige laid paper, and appears to be backed on the verso with heat set tissue.     Nouvelle Encyclopédie Pratique de Mécanique et D'électricité : Preservation Lab Treatment Report

    This is an encyclopedia of practical mechanics and electricity that features fourteen colored, interactive flap illustrations of various mechanical equipment, such as motors and locomotives. This volume is a quarter leather binding with a textured green cloth covering the boards. The upper cover cloth is embossed with Art Nouveau motifs and the title, author, and printer are stamped in gold. The lower cover is embossed with a round emblem. The leather spine is blind tooled with a similar Art Nouveau motif as the upper cover and the title and author are stamped in gold. There are two commercially made endbands stuck onto the spine of the text block. This volume has green and white made-in endsheets with a cloth hinge (the green covering cloth) that extends under the pastedowns and around the flyleaf. These endsheets feature the same emblem embossed on the loser cover. The text block consists primarily of thick board supports containing the illustrations. These boards are each attached with white cloth hinges. The recto of each board has a flap illustration, and the recto of the prior board leaf has a numbered list of the various components of the flap illustration. The half title page, title page, and contents page are printed on a beige machine-made paper. The last illustration (Plate XIV) includes a moving lever component, attached with a brass fastener, along with flap components.View Catalog Record: http://uclid.uc.edu/record=b349570
