This is a full leather binding from the Oesper History of Chemistry collection. This is the second volume in a two volume the set. The first volume previously came to the Preservation Lab for surrogate photography in preparation of exhibition. This 18th century binding features a dark marbled pattern on the cover and gold tooling along the spine and on the board edges. The edges of the text block are trimmed and colored red. The primary support is a beige laid paper.

Thalia, Muse of Comedy : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is a print from DAAP’s Teaching Collection, purchased at the request of faculty member, Christopher Platts. The collection is meant to be handled during classes and is housed in flat files at the DAAP Library. This is a 16th century burin-engraved print attributed to Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius and is plate number two from the series “The Nine Muses”. It is printed in black ink onto beige laid paper, featuring an image of Thalia, the Greek Muse of Comedy with printed text along the bottom edge that appears to be Latin. The verso of the print features two graphite inscriptions: one near the center that reads “V25” that is circled, and the other near the top left corner that reads “26”. The print was mounted to a wove white paper mat folder using photo corners. The window of the mat folder features a sheet of polyester attached to its inside using pressure-sensitive tape. Attached to the front of the matting system in the bottom right corner is a small, typed description of the print written in French, attached using pressure sensitive tape. Also, on the recto of the mat, in the upper right corner, is a graphite inscription of the price “600 €”. On the verso of the mat, in the upper left corner is a graphite inscription of the inventory number “No.4 Cat XXV”.https://www.jstor.org/stable/community.3502439
Daphne Embracing Her Father, the River-God Peneus : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is a print from DAAP’s Teaching Collection, purchased at the request of faculty member, Christopher Platts. The collection is meant to be handled during classes and is housed in flat files at the DAAP. This is a 16th century print made by Italian engraver and printmaker Master of the Die after Italian Renaissance painter and architect Julio Romano. This mythological engraving features Daphne embracing her father, the river god, Peneus with three other figures, two of which are holding pitchers, likely with water, while the third figure is pointing at either the seated Peneus or Daphne.https://www.jstor.org/stable/community.3593784
Res gestae divi Augusti : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This a full cloth binding with no decorations on the covers. The title is stamped in gold on the spine and there is a call number label adhered to the spine at the tail. In addition, there is adhesive residue along the spine. The text block is oversewn. The edges are cut and speckled. In addition, each edge of the text block has been stamped with a University of Cincinnati stamp in blue ink. The primary support is a machine-made wove paper, beige color. This is a half leather binding with marbled paper covering the boards. The leather spine is decorated with gold tooling. The marble paper on the boards shows a stone pattern. The text block is sewn through the fold on four recessed cords. The edges are trimmed and speckled brown. American Chemical Society. Cincinnati Section Dues. 1907 receipt book : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is a very small quarter bound receipt book from the Oesper History of Chemistry collection. The spine is covered in a textured cloth and the boards are covered in a machine-made marbled paper. The top and bottom edges of the text block are trimmed flush with the boards, while the fore edge of the text block is perforated. The fore edge of the board edges are rough from being crudely cut. The book is side sewn through three sewing stations. The primary support is a machine-made paper with a water mark and faux laid lines. Each page of the text block reads “American Chemical Society / Cincinnati Section”

This is an 18th century Alchemy German book from the Oesper collection. This book was brought to the Preservation Lab in preparation for exhibit. Surrogates from different plates throughout the text block will be created and displayed in 2025. This is the only copy of this title within the University of Cincinnati Libraries collection. The book has prior repairs that have failed over time. New gross Distillirbüch, wolgegründter künstlicher Distillation : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This item is a distillation manual for medicinal herbs, plants, and animals dating back to 1567. It is a full leather Gothic binding featuring two metal clasps. The boards and spine are undecorated. The boards are made of wood and are beveled along all edges. The text block is composed of several gatherings sewn through the fold onto four raised double cords and feature speckled brown trimmed edges. It contains text and images printed in black and color inks onto a soft beige, medium thickness, slightly textured laid paper. All paper descriptions by comparison with Print Council of America’s Paper Sample Book (Roy Perkinson and Elizabeth Lunning, 1996. The front pastedown features both brown ink and graphite inscriptions that appear to be measurement conversions, and the back pastedown and flyleaf feature graphite inscriptions that appear to be mathematical calculations. A purchase document from Jeff Weber Rare Books was included with the item, housed with it in its enclosure. This item arrived in a half-bound cloth covered clamshell enclosure, with a brown cloth and a brown leather spine piece. The spine is gold tooled, with the title stamped in golf on a red colored leather piece. OMI Archival Collection, Valentine R. Barker, Folder #2, advertising graphics : Preservation Lab Treatment Report
This is folder number two of eight of the OMI Archival Collection of Valentine R. Barker. Onlyfive folders were received by the lab at this time. This folder is comprised of 24 advertisinggraphics (one is a black and white duplicate of a color printed graphic) such as small cards andbroadsides, printed primarily in color ink onto smooth wove paper of various thicknesses. Oneof the graphics is adhered to a thin board. All but one of the graphics (the round-shapedadvertisement for Axl-Ease) are accompanied by a black and white photocopy. Included withthis collection is a printed inventory list of the items contained in this and all other folders of thecollection
