    Stories from the River

    This creative non-fiction piece draws on archival research and interviews to tell stories from the San Antonio River. Arranged in six thematic chapters, Stories from the River highlights the voices of people who have worked and lived along the river, as well as the river\u27s own voice. While the interviews include people from all over San Antonio, the chapters emphasize narratives from the city\u27s South and West Sides. These stories provoke reflection about how people form relationships with their physical environments, how injustice can be perpetuated in human and non-human ecosystems, and how love and remembrance can be the first steps towards understanding and healing a place

    Computationally Predicting Genetic Interaction Using Protein Networks

    Genetic interactions, especially negative genetic interactions, show the functional relationship between proteins. However, the detection of genetic interactions require dysfunction of genes, which makes it difficult obtain experimentally. Lots of research has been conducted on identifying negative interaction pairs using machine learning methods based on other biological datasets. However, they usually involve using genetic interaction related features, which brings circularity to the method. Therefore, we used physical interactions as our only data source and a support vector machine as classifier to predict negative genetic interactions. We achieved an AUC of 0.906 and accuracy of 0.832 without using any genetic interaction related features, and we have shown that the completion of physical interaction data and genetic interaction data over time has a positive correlation with the model’s performance

    Modeling the Effects of Hyaluronic Acid Degradation on the Regulation of Human Astrocyte Phenotype Using Multicomponent Interpenetrating Polymer Networks (mIPNs)

    Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a highly abundant component in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and a fundamental element to the architecture and the physiology of the central nervous system (CNS). Often, HA degradation occurs when an overreactive inflammatory response, derived from tissue trauma or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, causes the ECM in the CNS to be remodeled. Herein, we studied the effects of HA content as a key regulator of human astrocyte (HAf) reactivity using multicomponent interpenetrating polymer networks (mIPNs) comprised of Collagen I, HA and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. The selected platform facilities the modulation of HA levels independently of matrix rigidity. Total astrocytic processes length, number of endpoints, the expression of the quiescent markers: Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 Family Member L1 (ALDH1L1) and Glutamate Aspartate Transporter (GLAST); the reactive markers: Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and S100 Calcium-Binding Protein β (S100β); and the inflammatory markers: Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS), Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNFα), were assessed. Cumulatively, our results demonstrated that the decrease in HA concentration elicited a reduction in the total length of astrocytic processes and an increase in the expression of HAf reactive and inflammatory markers

    “My meemaw is a Cool Ass Person”: Family Members as Role Models of Resilience for Sexual and Gender Diverse People of Color

    The families of people of Color and indigenous people (POCI) are often analyzed as hostile institutions for sexual and gender diverse (SGD) adults. Using 58 interviews with SGD POCI from the Strengthening Colors of Pride 2018 Interview Study, we argue that Black and Latinx SGD adults gain resilience from family role models, mostly resilient mothers and othermothers. These resilient family members model three things: 1) how to overcome adversity and trauma, 2) being providers, and 3) emotional strength. This resilient modeling facilitates the adult resilience of SGD POCI who are navigating the complexity of intersections of race, sexuality, gender, poverty, and childhood trauma

    Interdisciplinary Faculty-Led Summer Study Abroad Linking Liberal Arts and Professional Programs

    This paper describes a faculty-led summer program in Madrid, Spain. We argue that it represents a case study in the implementation of best practices in study abroad, particularly as it relates to experiential programs that include an internship component. Adding to a growing consensus on best practices for these types of educational opportunities, we claim that study abroad experiential learning should include purposeful interdisciplinarity, in particular as it relates to the interconnection between a liberal arts education and useful business acumen. We believe that this integrative approach can serve as model for the liberal arts in the twenty-first century. In the article, we present detailed data on 15 years of the program, allowing the reader to contemplate and analyze the intricacies of implementation. We conclude that the benefits to students participating in experiential study abroad programs will be maximized in the post-pandemic world of this century
