    Poetic performance does not just refer to the public recitation of a prepared work of poetry. Poems bear witness to and construct acts of social performance and contribute to the creation of personae. Because it commonly draws attention to its audiences and speakers, lyric poetry is particularly suitable for such performances. In their respective lyric poetry, Horace and Marvell explore constructions of private lyric spaces withdrawn from their socio-historical contexts, the public sphere. While these spaces therefore seem separate from this public sphere, the two spheres are intertwined: these private spaces are shaped by, but also shape the public

    Minimalism has been very popular in the 21st century, finding its way back into art, graphic design, and even becoming a popular lifestyle. While it is a suitable aesthetic for branding certain product categories such as smartphones and skincare, it is not the solution for every design problem. This research explores the use of a maximalist design aesthetic in food packaging and branding. Food, a substance full of life, flavor, and energy reflects many principles of maximalism. This project concludes by examining successes of maximalism in food branding and applies the research to a package redesign of a local food startup in San Antonio, Texas

    Cocaine-Induced Structural and Functional Changes of Input-Specific Excitatory Synapses on Nigral Dopamine Neurons

    Drug abuse has been well documented to affect the brain, causing plasticity changes that include changes in receptor expression, number of synapses, and even receptor function and composition. Cocaine induces plasticity in various neural pathways that deal with motivation and reward-association, specifically targeting dopaminergic neurons. One of the dopaminergic systems affected by cocaine is the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has excitatory glutamatergic innervations to the SNc, and our research focuses on how cocaine affects their relationship. Prior research has shown that the ionotropic glutamate receptors: α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (AMPAR) and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) are affected by cocaine use. Specifically, the AMPA-to-NMDA receptor-mediated current ratio is decreased due to an increase in NMDAR mediated current seen after an acute cocaine injection in mice. The reason for this increase in NMDAR mediated current became the focus of our research. We utilized optogenetics to selectively excite PPN pre-synaptic neurons and with electrophysiology recorded from SNc dopaminergic post-synaptic neurons from brain slices. NBQX was used to block AMPAR function in order to focus on NMDAR function. We measured the IV relationship of NMDAR-mediated current from mice exposed to saline or cocaine. Strontium was used as a substitute to calcium in order to cause asynchronous release of neurotransmitter from PPN neurons. From our measures of the size and frequency of asynchronous release events, we may determine a change in number of NMDAR at a synapse or number of synapses, respectively. While the project is still in progress, data seems to point towards a NMDAR subunit change, seeing increased activity in cocaine-treated mice when the membrane voltage is negative. These data bring up interesting effects of cocaine, such as subunit changes, increase in synapses, and increase in receptor number

    Trinity University\u27s Summer Bridge Program: Navigating the Changing Demographics in Higher Education

    Our article is divided into five sections. First, our study explores the demographic, economic, and cultural changes influencing higher education. We also explain the tangible and intangible benefits of a college education for first-generation, underrepresented students (FGUS). Second, we provide a brief discussion of the history of Trinity University and our Summer Bridge program. Third, our study describes our Summer Bridge program. Fourth, the data we collected examines how our Summer Bridge students’ grades and retention rates compare to our other first-year students. And, fifth, our article concludes with a discussion of future directions for our Summer Bridge program and how it may apply to other higher educational institutions. In particular, we offer recommendations for other student affairs professionals who also will be experiencing an increase in first-generation, underrepresented students

    Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Does the Type of Treatment Make a Difference?

    Purpose of Review: The first aim of this review is to summarize the major evidence-based psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and the research supporting their use. The second aim is to explore the evidence for the differential effectiveness of these treatments. Recent Findings: Four types of specific psychotherapies are identified that show promising results in at least two randomized controlled trials. In addition, several adjunctive and minimal/pragmatic interventions are available that are supported by research evidence. Recent findings highlight the applicability of these treatments across settings and populations and have begun to show that modified versions of them are also beneficial. Summary: There is solid evidence that various specific therapies are superior to treatment as usual in the community for borderline personality disorder. There is no reliable evidence that any of these specific treatments is more effective than any other, however. In addition, existing treatments have many elements in common that may be responsible in part for their effects. Future research will be needed to uncover the influence of various study design factors, patient characteristics, and treatment parameters on psychotherapy outcome for BPD

    From Relativity to Paraphrenia in D.H. Lawrence\u27s “The Man Who Loved Islands”: Speculations on Einstein, Freud, Gossamer Webs, and Seagulls

    The development of D.H. Lawrence\u27s The Man Who Loved Islands through Cathcart\u27s consecutive ownership of three islands engages the consequences of Cathcart\u27s intense isolation from humanity. In the process of charting the steps in this character\u27s collapse of body, mind, and spirit, Lawrence employs metaphors that explicitly connect to Einstein\u27s notions of relativity and spacetime. In addition to this fictionalized adaptation of contemporary research in astrophysics, Lawrence cumulatively relates the palpable decline of Cathcart\u27s equilibrium, the pattern of his anxiety, and the context of his depression to precise pathologies outlined in Freud\u27s work the previous decade about obsessional neurosis, melancholia, and ultimately, paraphrenia. Lawrence\u27s awareness of the work of an innovative psychiatrist and writer, Trigant Burrow, provides additional insight into Lawrence\u27s personal preoccupations and doctrinal emphasis in the tale

    A Critical Analysis of Electrospray Techniques for the Determination of Accelerated Rates and Mechanisms of Chemical Reactions in Droplets

    Electrospray and Electrosonic Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESSI-MS) have been widely used to report evidence that many chemical reactions in micro- and nano-droplets are dramatically accelerated by factors of ∼102 to 106 relative to macroscale bulk solutions. Despite electrospray\u27s relative simplicity to both generate and detect reaction products in charged droplets using mass spectrometry, substantial complexity exists in how the electrospray process itself impacts the interpretation of the mechanism of these observed accelerated rates. ESI and ESSI are both coupled multi-phase processes, in which analytes in small charged droplets are transferred and detected as gas-phase ions with a mass spectrometer. As such, quantitative examination is needed to evaluate the impact of multiple experimental factors on the magnitude and mechanisms of reaction acceleration. These include: (1) evaporative concentration of reactants as a function of droplet size and initial concentration, (2) competition from gas-phase chemistry and reactions on experimental surfaces, (3) differences in ionization efficiency and ion transmission and (4) droplet charge. We examine (1-4) using numerical models, new ESI/ESSI-MS experimental data, and prior literature to assess the limitations of these approaches and the experimental best practices required to robustly interpret acceleration factors in micro- and nano-droplets produced by ESI and ESSI

    Blurring Boundaries: Exploring Tweets as a Legitimate Journalism Artifact

    This study explores journalists’ use of Twitter and what it means for their craft. Based on 8 weeks newsroom observation and more than a dozen in-depth interviews with reporters and editors at a big metro newspaper, the study found that journalists had contradicting views on whether or not to accept tweets, a form of snippet artifact, as a legitimate journalism artifact, leading to the blurring artifact boundary. Related, journalists faced uncertainties and ambiguities regarding the implications of such snippet artifact for the journalism craft and its core mission of informing the public
