Segmentation of the Wassuk Range Normal Fault System, Nevada (USA): Implications for Earthquake Rupture and Walker Lane Dynamics
Normal faults are commonly segmented along strike, with segments that localize strain and influence propagation of slip during earthquakes. Although geometry of segments can be constrained by fault mapping, it is challenging to determine seismically relevant segments along a fault zone. Because slip histories, geometries, and strength of linkages between normal fault segments fundamentally control the propagation of rupture during earthquakes, and differences in segment slip rates result in differential uplift of adjacent footwalls, we use along‐ strike changes in footwall morphology to detect fault segments and the relative strength of the mechanical links between them.
We apply a new geomorphic analysis protocol to the Wassuk Range fault, Nevada, within the actively deforming Walker Lane. The protocol examines characteristics of footwall morphology, including range‐crest continuity, bedrock‐channel long profiles, catchment area variability, and footwall relief, to detect changes in strike‐parallel footwall characteristics. Results reveal six domains with significant differences in morphology that we use to identify seismically‐relevant fault segments and segment boundaries. We integrate our results with previous studies to determine relative strength of links between the six segments, informing seismic hazard assessment. When combined with recent geodetic studies, our results have implications for the future evolution of the Walker Lane, suggesting changes in the accommodation of strain across the region. Our analysis demonstrates the power of this method to efficiently detect along‐strike changes in footwall morphology related to fault behavior, permitting future researchers to perform reconnaissance assessment of normal fault segmentation worldwide
To Live to Tell (2022)
Although many fiction films exist about the role of memory in the Vietnam War, few documentaries have taken up this subject in an educational and innovative way. This absence is concerning because testimonies offer stunning revelations regarding the aftermath of conflict, such as repressed memories of survivors and post-war erasures. Contextually, the Communist victory that ended the Vietnam War in April 1975 resulted in a two-decade-long refugee crisis. Following the Fall of Saigon, Southern Vietnamese people sought refuge via overcrowded ships and were dubbed boat people. Yet there is more to the story. The burden of this unsettled history has divided the Vietnamese diaspora communities across the United States, yet it remains an underexplored topic almost half a century after.
In To Live To Tell (2020), survivors and overseas Vietnamese share stories about their individual journeys to form a collective collage of experiences. In Vietnam, there was one history. In the United States, there was another. Yet, neither were complete. Therefore, the idea of transnationalizing Vietnam and tracing the ties that connect diasporic Vietnamese to each other and to their homeland is crucial in understanding the complete narrative. Individuals from various backgrounds consisting of blue collar workers, white collar workers, musicians, scholars and local dignitaries share their stories on how they constructed their bicultural identities in a foreign land. Each story offers refreshing perspectives on what it is to be Vietnamese. At the center of the film is a message to the Vietnamese youth of tomorrow and how music is used for self-expression, community building, and cultural preservation. Contractional Fold Amplification Through Bed-Parallel Gypsum Vein (“Beef”) Formation
Field observations and structural analysis of a 50-m-wavelength gentle anticline document bed-parallel fibrous gypsum veins (“beef”) and calcite veins associated with contractional folding in the Boquillas Formation, east of Langtry, west Texas. Gypsum beef veins with bed-perpendicular fibers accommodated vertical extension of 13% in the anticline, diminishing to 0% in adjacent synclines. Bed-parallel calcite veins accommodated 0–4% vertical extension across the structure, with no clear correspondence of vein distribution to structural position. Homogenization temperatures from two-phase fluid inclusions in calcite veins indicate trapping depths of 2.0–2.7 km. Source rock analysis from unoxidized organic-rich mudrock at the site shows that the rocks never reached hydrocarbon maturation conditions, therefore vein formation cannot be explained by in situ hydrocarbon expulsion. Bed-parallel veins with vertical or bed-perpendicular fibers document a thrust faulting stress regime during contractional folding near the frontal limit of Laramide deformation. Gypsum vein formation may be related to meteoric water interacting with pyrite or H2S to form sulfuric acid, dissolution of carbonate, and deposition of gypsum as an auxiliary mineral. Switching between calcite and gypsum mineralization suggests opening and closing of fault and fracture controlled fluid pathways during deformation
Sun Tracking Solar Panel (STSP1) Final Project Report
The purpose of this report is to present the final version of our design, which is a proof-of-concept regarding whether it is viable and beneficial to create a system that allows solar panels to track the sun in order to increase efficiency. The final design went through some changes compared to the version proposed in the Preliminary Design report, which are a reduction in a motor and a direction of rotation. This was due to the fact that it would have been difficult to safely mount our initial design to a rooftop. Our final design is much safer to put on a rooftop and can fit more panels per rooftop.
The final design was evaluated using several tests to ensure it meets all the requirements and constraints proposed. The results from the tests indicated that the final design was able to meet six of the requirements and came close to fulfilling the seventh. The final design satisfied three main requirements, including the weight limit requirements for Texas residential roof, the motion mechanism can rotate freely at 180-degree, and the tracking subsystem was able to track the sun accurately within 10-degrees. The final design also satisfies three out of four additional requirements, which are needed if the design is applied in the practical scenarios. Specifically, the product was able to handle 60mph wind, resist water and dust ingress following code IP54, and pay off within 10 years if two or more panels are used according to the result of margin cost-benefit analysis. Because multiple solar panels can be rotated based on measurements from a single tracking system, by adding more panels to the rooftop our design can pay off the increased costs. The fourth additional requirement is the ability to function within a range of temperatures experienced by Texas rooftops. Our design failed to meet the temperature requirement of operation in temperatures between -23 to 160°F because of the servo motor’s ambient temperature specifications (5-158°F). We found out that this is unavoidable in this price range for the servo motors. And purchasing a more expensive servo motor to meet this constraint will fail the requirement of paying off within 10 years which the team deemed as a more important requirement, and it is rare for a Texas roof to reach temperatures below 5°F.
Overall, the final design can be considered as successful since it meets the project objectives and most of the requirements
Ahead of His Time: Joseph Grinnell, Natural History, and Inclusion and Equity in STEM
Joseph Grinnell designed the Natural History of the Vertebrates (NHV) course at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California at Berkeley, over 100 years ago and the course has changed little over these years. In this essay, I connect modern pedagogical and cognitive understandings of what we know leads to success among students to the course. This analysis reveals that the course continues to be successful because it has all the elements of a student-centered, active-learning class that leads to better cognitive gains, better retention, and importantly, proportionately better gains for students from underserved populations. This study will be important for advocates of teaching natural history in biology curriculum.

Challenging Depressive Beliefs: Habitual and Recollective Components of Stability or Change
Background and objectives. Depressed people tend to hold stable negative beliefs that resist challenges. Two experiments investigated the cognitive bases of belief change or resistance to change following the provision of supportive or challenging pseudo-evidence.
Method. Students scoring high and low on a measure of depressed state read belief statements, each followed by invented experimental evidence to either verify or discount them. Two days later, they read all the belief statements again, together with new statements, this time rating belief.
Results. The students agreed that the statements described common beliefs and that the evidence was plausible. Discounted statements were believed less than new statements on the test. Also, dysphoric students believed discounted and new statements less than verified statements, but that difference was larger for the nondysphoric students. Parameter estimates of the habitual basis for belief ratings, obtained with process-dissociation procedures, were higher in the dysphoric group, and estimates of evidence recollection were lower. The latter finding was conceptually supported by deficient recognition of the gist of the discounting evidence in the dysphoric group (Experiment 2).
Limitations. Experiment 2 results replicated the rating effects in Experiment 1, but not the parameter differences, due to low power as a consequence of the university response to the pandemic.
Conclusions. We interpret these results in the context of other evidence regarding belief change and depressive cognition, such as habitual rumination and deficient cognitive control

James Sicner\u27s Eternal Vigilance : An Illustrated Narrative to The World\u27s Largest Photo-Collage Mural
In the Coates Library at Trinity University in San Antonio Texas, a remarkable work of art covers its central stairwell\u27s outer and inner walls. It is the world’s largest photo-collage mural, encompassing c.1,400 square feet, and composed of hundreds of images, many of which are themselves composed of, and integrated with, other images. It was created by the artist, James Sicner.
This is a guide to that work. It is based on primary research conducted in 1991 and an examination of primary sources, texts, and illustrations located in Sicner’s home, conducted and transcribed two subsequent interviews with James’ sister Celeste Sicner-Hurd, and transcribed an on-air Trinity University “Library Hour” program James Sicner had with Irma Dee Everts, and Katherine Pettit, on January 30, 1980.https://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/mono/1193/thumbnail.jp
