Anclas para Sueños Silvestres. Una Conversación con Eduardo Kohn
Following the Spanish publication of the book How Forests Think. Toward an Anthropology Beyond the Human, Eduardo Kohn (Associate Professor of Anthropology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and Affiliated Researcher at FLACSO in Ecuador) reflects on the origins and the trajectory of his research in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The conversation dwells on questions of theory and method, on key concepts of this influential work (such as absence, hierarchy, and emergence ), and, finally, on the new paths that have appeared since the initial publication of this book in 2013. The narrative that takes place in the interview will be helpful for those approaching How Forests Think for the first or umpteenth time, leading us to appreciate the many kinds of stories unfolding between the lines of this fascinating work.
A propósito de la publicación en español del libro Cómo piensan los bosques. Hacia una antropología más allá de lo humano (2021), Eduardo Kohn (profesor de antropología de la Universidad de McGill en Montreal, Canadá, e investigador afiliado en la FLACSO de Ecuador) reflexiona sobre los antecedentes y la trayectoria de su investigación en la Amazonía ecuatoriana. Assessing Manganese Concentrations in Groundwater Across the Shenandoah Valley, VA
Aqueous manganese (Mn2+) in groundwater used for drinking water has adverse aesthetic effects at concentrations ≥ 50 ppb and adverse human health effects at concentrations ≥ 100 ppb. Mn2+ in groundwater may have anthropogenic (mines, pesticide, gasoline) or geogenic (rocks and minerals) sources. Private drinking water wells are vulnerable to Mn2+ contamination because their water quality is not routinely monitored. This study uses groundwater data from 1587 private wells in the Shenandoah Valley, VA to assess the spatial distribution of Mn2+ in groundwater and identify possible Mn2+ contamination mechanisms. Using geospatial and statistical analyses I found that samples collected near the valley center predominantly in shale host lithologies contained Mn2+ ≥ 50 ppb more frequently (26%) than sandstone (25%), metamorphic (13%), limestone (3%), dolostone (2%), igneous (0%), and black shale (0%) lithologies. Additionally, samples collected in closer proximity to surface water had higher Mn2+ concentrations. Groundwater samples with elevated Mn2+ (≥ 100 ppb) occurred on average 206 m from surface water as opposed to 304 m on average for low Mn2+ samples (≤ 100 ppb). Our data suggest that elevated Mn2+ in groundwater occurs near rivers at the valley center where old, anoxic groundwater upwells and reductively dissolves Mn oxides in soils and sediment. Overall, those who source drinking water from wells in the Shenandoah Valley should be cautious of consuming untreated water within shale lithologies
Pushing Back: Reading The World as Will and Representation as a Woman
Judith Norman takes up the complicated question of feminism in WWR. Political critiques of the history of philosophy frequently accuse philosophers of illegitimately universalizing a particular view of subjectivity – unwittingly normalizing a parochial conception of human nature, for instance. Although this is a critique that can undoubtedly be extended to Schopenhauer, it is striking that Nietzsche, drawing largely on metaphysical resources derived from Schopenhauer, was one of the first to really recognize and contest this illegitimate philosophical strategy. Norman looks at the extent to which Schopenhauer anticipated Nietzsche in this project of tracing a genealogy of the subject within a metaphysics of will, closely examining Schopenhauer’s fraught discussion of sexual difference in “The Metaphysics of Sexual Love.” This leads her to the question of the ontological status of sexual difference, and whether this cleft in nature registers at the level of transcendental subjectivity, and the consequences for Schopenhauer’s view of the subject, the question of women readers of the text, and women subjects of philosophy in general
Artificial Intelligence: Reshaping the Accounting Profession and the Disruption to Accounting Education
This study provides insights from accounting professionals on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and the associated risks on the accounting profession. Survey data suggests that participants have an overall positive perception of AI and believe it will enhance their job performance by reducing repetitive tasks and the risk of human error. In addition, participants believe that the growth of AI technology will change the focus of accounting curriculums to include specialized computer skills. Significantly stronger agreement is expressed by public accountants in Big 4 firms compared to non-Big 4 firms, industry, and accounting educators. More specifically, skills in data management, data cleansing, and correcting inaccurate or incomplete data are valued more by industry and public accountants than by accounting educators. It is imperative that accounting programs rise to the challenge of equipping students to be life-long learners in accounting to grow with the changes in the profession
Seeing Shakespeare: Narco narratives and neocolonial appropriations of \u3cem\u3eMacbeth\u3c/em\u3e in the US–Mexico Borderlands
This essay examines the racializing logics and consequences of drawing analogies between the works of William Shakespeare and the devastatingly violent realities of the drug trade in the Americas. The particular prominence of Macbeth in the wide range of Shakespearean invocations and appropriations in contemporary US narratives about narcotrafficking cannot be attributed simply to the fact that it is a tale of bloody ambition. Rather, the repeated mapping of a play that comes to its conclusion with an English military invasion of its “barbarous” Scottish neighbors onto the US–Mexico Borderlands speaks to much deeper histories of colonial conquest and to neocolonial interventionist policies and actions of the present. The essay concludes by turning to two recent instances in which theater artists have translated and significantly revised Macbeth in order to reframe dominant narratives about narcotrafficking, racial supremacy, and the border. These productions demonstrate the disruptive and transformative potential of Shakespearean appropriations that resist neocolonial power structures and ideologies

The goal for our final project was to design and manufacture a record player capable of producing music using a 12 inch LP or 7-inch single vinyl record. When powered, the record player spins the vinyl at a specific speed, and using the needle sound vibrations are sent to an audio amplifier to output sound. A motor is used to control the desired speed and rotate the plate which the vinyl record is placed on. Figure 1 shows a simplified sketch of the needle cartridge system; the system consists of a needle and an attached magnet that is placed near a solenoid to generate an electrical signal based on the needle arm movement. The needle is placed in the grooves of the record causing the needle arm to vibrate, which produces an electrical signal in the solenoid due to the magnet
Are Auditors\u27 Reliance on Conclusions from Data Analytics Impacted By Different Data Analytic Inputs?
Global stakeholders have expressed interest in increasing the use of data analytics throughout the audit process. While data analytics offer great promise in identifying audit-relevant information, auditors may not uniformly incorporate this information into their decision making. This study examines whether conclusions from two data analytic inputs, the type of data analytical model (anomaly vs. predictive) and type of data analyzed (financial vs. nonfinancial), result in different auditors\u27 decisions. Findings suggest that conclusions from data analytical models and data analyzed jointly impact budgeted audit hours. Specifically, when financial data is analyzed auditors increase budgeted audit hours more when predictive models are used than when anomaly models are used. The opposite occurs when nonfinancial data is analyzed, auditors increase budgeted audit hours more when anomaly models are used compared to predictive models. These findings provide initial evidence that data analytics with different inputs do not uniformly impact auditors\u27 judgments

The Role of Fracture Branching in the Evolution of Fracture Networks: An Outcrop Study of the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, Southern Utah
Fractures strongly influence the permeability of geologic formations, and because most fractures in the subsurface are below the resolution of geophysical methods, predicting the spatial evolution of fracture networks is important for groundwater resources, oil and gas production, and geothermal energy. Previous researchers have established that variations in lithologic mechanical properties influence the propagation of joints and fractures in layered rocks under stable stress conditions, but few studies have addressed how instabilities in local stress fields, in conjunction with variations in rock mechanical properties, lead to fracture branching. We investigate NE-striking fractures in the footwall of the west-dipping Sevier fault in Utah, USA, where canyons expose the sub-horizontal Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. We analyzed field data, petrographic data, and unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) imagery to document the fracture network. We also used structure-from-motion (SfM) software to build a 3D virtual outcrop model, measuring 100 m high and 260 m wide, to aid our analysis of fracture network geometry, intensity, and spacing variations. Data reveal an up-section increase in fracture intensity and decrease in spacing regularity partly accommodated by upward fracture branching. We suggest that branching was initiated by a combination of changes in mechanical behavior within cross-bed sets and twist hackle propagation associated with mixed mode fracture systems. These tree-like fracture geometries may be associated with high-velocity, earthquake-related fracture propagation events. Fracture branching strongly influences permeability and should be considered by researchers investigating fracture development in subsurface systems
Four in One: Cryptic Diversity in Geoffroy’s Side-Necked Turtle \u3cem\u3ePhrynops geoffroanus\u3c/em\u3e (Schweigger 1812) (Testudines: Pleurodira: Chelidae) in Brazil
Turtles are one of the most threatened groups of vertebrates, with about 60% of species classified at some level of extinction risk. Compounding this extinction crisis are cryptic species and species complexes that are evaluated under a single species epithet but harbor multiple species, each of which needs to be evaluated independently. The Phrynops geoffroanus species group is a classic example. Described first in 1812, it is currently thought to harbor multiple species. To test this hypothesis, we collected mitochondrial and nuclear genomic data, morphometric data, and distribution and associated biome information. We applied statistically rigorous species delimitation analyses, taxonomic hypotheses tests, and fully coalescent phylogenetic reconstruction methods, concluding that the Phrynops geoffroanus species complex comprises four geographically structured species/lineages that diverged during the Pleistocene and are currently geographically structured along the main South American river basins and biomes. These species/lineages show subtle and largely non-significant differences in shape but are characterized by differences in coloration and patterns of marks on the head and plastron. Our results contribute to the understanding of species diversity and diversification of biodiversity in South America and provide an important basis for the conservation of freshwater turtles
