Effectiveness and Mechanisms of Change in Imagery-Based Techniques
Imagery-based techniques have received increasing interest in psychotherapy research. Whereas their effectiveness has been shown for various psychological disorders, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Current research predominantly investigates intrapersonal processes, while interpersonal processes have received no attention to date. The aim of the current dissertation was to fill this lacuna. The three interrelated studies comprising this dissertation were the first to examine the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques in the treatment of test anxiety, relate physiological arousal to emotional processing, and investigate the association between physiological synchrony and multiple process measures.
Study I investigated the feasibility of a newly developed protocol, which integrates imagery-based and cognitive-behavioral components, to treat test anxiety in a sample of 31 students. The results indicated the protocol as acceptable, feasible, and effective in the treatment of test anxiety. Additionally, the imagery-based component was positively associated with therapeutic bond, session evaluation, and emotional experience.
Study II shifted the focus from the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques to client-therapist physiological synchrony as a putative mechanism of change in the same sample. The results suggested that physiological synchrony was greater than chance during both imagery-based and cognitive-behavioral components. Variability of physiological synchrony on the session-level during the imagery-based components and variability on both levels (session and dyad) during the cognitive-behavioral components were demonstrated. Furthermore, physiological synchrony of the imagery-based segments was positively assocatied with therapeutic bond. No association was found for the cognitive-behavioral components.
Study III examined both intrapersonal (i.e., clients’ electrodermal activity) and interpersonal (i.e., client-therapist electrodermal activity synchrony) processes and their associations with emotional processing in a sample of 49 client-therapist-dyads. The results suggested that higher client physiological arousal and a moderate level of physiological synchrony were associated with deeper emotional processing.
Taken together, the results highlight the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques in the treatment of test anxiety. Furthermore, the results of Studies II and III support the idea of physiological synchrony as a mechanism of change in imagery with and without rescripting. The current dissertation takes an important step towards optimizing process research within psychotherapy and contributes to a better understanding of the potency and mechanisms of change of imagery-based techniques. We hope that these studies’ implications will support everyday clinical practice
Das Entscheidungsverhalten von Social Entrepreneurship unterstützenden Organisationen bei der Auswahl von Social Ventures: Eine Untersuchung der Unterstützungslandschaft für Social Entrepreneurship im DACH-Raum
This work deals with the current support landscape for Social Entrepreneurship (SE) in the DACH region. It provides answers to the questions of which actors support SE, how and why they do so, and which social ventures are supported. In addition, there is a focus on the motives for supporting SE as well as the decision-making process while selecting social ventures. In both cases, it is examined whether certain characteristics of the decision-maker and the organization influence the weighting of motives and decision-making criteria. More precise, the gender of the decision-maker as well as the kind of support by the organization is analyzed. The concrete examples of foundations and venture philanthropy organizations (VPOs) will give a deeper look at the SE support motives and decision-making behavior. In a quantitative empirical data collection, by means of an online survey, decision-makers from SE supporting organizations in the DACH region were asked to participate in a conjoint experiment and to fill in a questionnaire. The results illustrate a positive development of the SE support landscape in the German-speaking area as well as the heterogeneity of the organizational types, the financial and non-financial support instruments and the supported social ventures. Regarding the motives for SE-support, a general endeavor to change and to create an impact has proven to be particularly important at the organizational and the individual level. At the individual level female and male decision-makers have subtle differences in their motives to promote SE. Robustness checks by analyzing certain subsamples provide information about that. Individuals from foundations and VPOs, on the other hand, hardly differ from each other, even though here individuals with a rather social background face individuals with a business background. At the organizational level crucial differences can be identified for the motives, depending on the nature of the organization's support, and again comparing foundations with VPOs. Especially for the motives 'financial interests', 'reputation' and 'employee development' there are big differences between the considered groups. Eventually, by means of cluster analysis and still with respect to the support motives, two types of decision-makers could be determined on both the individual and the organizational level.
In terms of the decision-making behavior, and the weighting of certain decision-making criteria respectively, it has emerged that it is worthwhile having a closer look: The 'importance of the social problem' and the 'authenticity of the start-up team' are consistently the two most important criteria when it comes to selecting social ventures for supporting them. However, comparing male and female decision-makers, foundations and VPOs, as well as the two groups of financially and non-financially supporting organizations, there are certain specifics which are highly relevant for SE practice. Here as well a cluster analysis uncovered patterns of criteria weighting by identifying three different types of decision-makers
Remote Sensing of Antarctic Sea Ice: A Novel Lead Retrieval Algorithm and Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Variability of Sea Ice Concentration
Leveraging OSM and GEOBIA to create and update forest type maps
Up-to-date information about the type and spatial distribution of forests is an essential element in both sustainable forest management and environmental monitoring and modelling. The OpenStreetMap (OSM) database contains vast amounts of spatial information on natural features, including forests (landuse=forest). The OSM data model includes describing tags for its contents, i.e., leaf type for forest areas (i.e., leaf_type=broadleaved). Although the leaf type tag is common, the vast majority of forest areas are tagged with the leaf type mixed, amounting to a total area of 87% of landuse=forests from the OSM database. These areas comprise an important information source to derive and update forest type maps. In order to leverage this information content, a methodology for stratification of leaf types inside these areas has been developed using image segmentation on aerial imagery and subsequent classification of leaf types. The presented methodology achieves an overall classification accuracy of 85% for the leaf types needleleaved and broadleaved in the selected forest areas. The resulting stratification demonstrates that through approaches, such as that presented, the derivation of forest type maps from OSM would be feasible with an extended and improved methodology. It also suggests an improved methodology might be able to provide updates of leaf type to the OSM database with contributor participation
This work is placed in the area of information extraction and combines several methods from machine learning. An algorithm is presented which uses semi-supervised learning and active learning. Starting point is the approach on the data, by creating several views on it. The input of different persons is used. Separated from each other the algorithm uses classifiers to generate models, which are built upon the individual annotations of the persons. To create the dataset needed in the algorithm crowdsourcing is used, which allows to incorporate a big amount of persons. Their task is to annotate texts. On the one hand, this is initially done for a historical text corpus. In the course of this it is explained, which steps are necessary, to offer the annotation task in crowdsourcing platforms. On the other hand, a current dataset of a short message service is used. The algorithm is set up to process these example datasets. In experiments optimal parameters for the algorithm are determined. Finally, the results are evaluated in comparison to the results of existing algorithms
On the cemetery of the church of St. Matthias in the south of Trier, four Roman burial chambers are visible today. Until now they have been interpreted as being the basements of separate tombs. The area in which they were found had been part of the southern necropolis of the Roman city of Trier. Mainly used for inhumations this part of the necropolis is outlined and described by the archaeological findings for the first time in the work at hand.
Several investigations concerning the chambers had taken place earlier, the most extensive ones in summer 1931 and during the 1960s. The analysis of the documentations made during these campaigns combined with the author’s own observations are the main objects of the present work. They proved that most of the chambers were never parts of separate buildings but belonged to a huge complex of buildings. This consisted of a rectangular main building incorporating the basement of just one older tomb as a kind of cellar with water supply. The main building had a solid ground floor and painted wall plaster. Shortly after construction it was extended: Two chambers were inserted, and annexes attached on its east side. The southernmost annex had an apsidal shape and a subterranean burial chamber that displays an impressive relief sarcophagus until today.
Following the archaeological findings this complex of buildings was erected during the time of Emperor Constantine (306–337 AD) and was destroyed by the middle of the 5th century AD.
While the nearby Roman provinces lack architectural parallels, the northern necropolis of Trier provides a comparison: Beneath the church of St. Maximin, the remains of another huge complex of buildings had come to light. This complex had been erected since the middle of the 4th century AD and was used by the Christian community. While its development and planning bear analogies to the building at St. Matthias, a big difference can be observed in the burial practice. At St. Maximin, a huge amount of stone sarcophagi had been embedded into the ground inside the main building and in most of the annexes, erected without a solid ground floor and resembling the funerary basilicas in Rome. The building near St. Matthias, by contrast, showed a solid floor and chambers, but inside the complex only the relief sarcophagus can be appointed to the time of use. This indicates that the idea of separated burials may have been in focus beside other functions. These functions might have been the providing of water and roofed assembly space for the cult of the dead. Therefore, the search for such functional elements could enable a more appropriate access to Roman sepulchral architecture in further studies
