    Development of Thixotropic Molecular Oleogels Comprising Alkylanilide Gelators by Using a Mixing Strategy

    Molecular oleogels have the potential to be used as materials in healthcare applications. However, their design and synthesis are complex, thus requiring simple and effective methods for their preparation. This paper reports on alkylanilides that are low molecular-weight organogelators, which when appropriately mixed with different alkyl chain lengths could result in the formation of mixed molecular gels that exhibit excellent gel-forming ability and mechanical properties. In addition, the single and mixed molecular organogel systems were found to be applicable as single and mixed molecular oleogel systems capable of gelling oils such as olive oil and squalane. This has been found to be true, especially in molecular oleogel systems consisting of squalane, which is used as solvents in healthcare. The mixed squalene-molecular oleogel systems showed an increase in the critical (minimum) gelation concentration from 1.0 to 0.1 wt.% in the single system and an improvement in the thixotropic behavior recovery time. The thixotropic behavior of the molecular oleogels in the mixed system was quantitatively evaluated through dynamic viscoelasticity measurements; however, it was not observed for the single-system molecular oleogels. Scanning electron microscopy of the xerogels suggested that this behavior is related to the qualitative improvement of the network owing to the refinement of the mesh structure. These mixed molecular oleogels, composed of alkylanilides displaying such thixotropic behavior, could be used as candidates for ointment-base materials in the healthcare field.journal articl

    Microbial redox cycling enhances ecosystem thermodynamic efficiency and productivity

    Microbial life in low-energy ecosystems relies on individual energy conservation, optimizing energy use in response to interspecific competition and mutualistic interspecific syntrophy. Our study proposes a novel community-level strategy for increasing energy use efficiency. By utilizing an oxidation–reduction (redox) reaction network model that represents microbial redox metabolic interactions, we investigated multiple species-level competition and cooperation within the network. Our results suggest that microbial functional diversity allows for metabolic handoffs, which in turn leads to increased energy use efficiency. Furthermore, the mutualistic division of labour and the resulting complexity of redox pathways actively drive material cycling, further promoting energy exploitation. Our findings reveal the potential of self-organized ecological interactions to develop efficient energy utilization strategies, with important implications for microbial ecosystem functioning and the co-evolution of life and Earth.journal articl

    An atonal homolog, lin-32, regulates hypodermal morphogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans

    The transcription factor atonal contributes to patterning and cell fate determination in specialized epithelial cells in various animals, but its function in hypodermis is unknown. Here, we analyzed the atonal homolog lin-32 in C. elegans to clarify whether atonal acts in hypodermal development. The lin-32 null mutants exhibited bulges and cavities in their head, which were prevented by LIN-32 expression. Fluorescent protein was expressed in hypodermis cells at the embryonic stage by the lin-32 promoter. These results certify that atonal plays an essential role in the development of a broader range of tissues as hypodermis than initially thought.journal articl

    Averages of b -hadron, c -hadron, and τ -lepton properties as of 2021

    This paper reports world averages of measurements of -hadron, -hadron, and -lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available before April 2021. In rare cases, significant results obtained several months later are also used. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, ⁢ violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements.journal articl

    時間的展望と非行の関係について : 時間的展望のプロフィールを用いた検討

    Time perspective (TP) is a vital psychological component that has been observed to be related to numerous human behaviors as well as psychological elements. Using the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), a person’s TP profiles in the past, present, and future can be identified simultaneously. This study examined the association between presence in profiles based on the ZTPI and delinquency. A total of 102 male university students participated in the study. Cluster analysis identified four TP profiles. Among these, the profile characterized by high scores on PN, PH, and PF and low scores on PP and F was found to be positively related to delinquency, while the balanced profile and the profile characterized by low scores on PN, PP, PH, and PF seemed to have a relatively inhibitory effect on delinquency. This result indicates that a balanced TP is not the only temporal profile that can inhibit delinquency. Therefore, further discussions on the balanced TP profile and other profiles are necessary.journal articl

    Typology on exterior design of townhouses in a World Cultural Heritage Site of a Nepali City

    The paper deals with the exterior design of townhouses in an urban block of theeastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley. The primary purpose is to pro-vide an analysis method to determine the typical combination among exteriordesign components of Nepalese townhouses. By using multiple correspondenceanalysis and cluster analysis, 118 samples are grouped into 13 clusters. Secondly,all the clustered samples were put onto the original plots on the map to see thecharacteristics of their locations. Such a process would help a designer/plannerreflect on how they should compose a proper facade in reconstruction works oftownhouses after the earthquake in 2015.The Japanese version of this paper was published in volume 84, number 756, pages 425–435, https://doi.org/10.3130/aija.84.425, of the Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering (Transactions of AIJ).
