An Electron/Ion Dual Conductive Integrated Cathode Using Cationic/Anionic Redox for High‐Energy‐Density All‐Solid‐State Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries
All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSB), composed of sulfur cathode and lithium metal anode with high theoretical capacity, have a potentially higher energy density by weight than a typical lithium-ion battery (LIB). However, due to insulating sulfur, a relatively large proportion of electronic (carbon) and ionic (solid electrolyte) conductors are mixed for cathode fabrication, leading to inferior practical capacity. Herein, we report a novel integrated cathode Li2S-LiI-MoS2 which has relatively high electronic and ionic conductivities (the order of 10−4 S cm−1) without any carbon and solid electrolyte. The ASSLSB with integrated Li2S-LiI-MoS2 cathode delivers a remarkably high energy density of 1020 Wh kg−1 at the cathode level at room temperature. By applying precise X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis and X-ray computed tomography, it is found that the formation of an ionic conducting phase composed mainly of LiI during discharge is responsible for the high rate capability. Furthermore, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) has also revealed the charge compensation mechanism and ascertained the involvement of both Mo 3d and S 3p orbitals during the charging and discharging process. It is believed the strategy will pave the way for developing high practical energy density at room temperature for all-solid-state batteries.journal articl
journal articl
Transition of the Bifurcations in the Rotation of a Camphor-Coated Elliptical Paper Disk
An elliptical camphor-coated paper disk whose center of mass is fixed at the rotational axis rotates spontaneously with a constant angular velocity when placed on the surface of water. In our experiments, we observed bifurcation by controlling the water depth, i.e., the disk rotated and was stationary at higher and lower water depths, respectively. Further, the bifurcation type depended on the aspect ratio of the elliptical camphor disk; subcritical and supercritical bifurcations were observed in the high- and low-aspect-ratio experiments, respectively. Thus, the experiments and phenomenological models indicated that the friction between the acrylic rod as the rotational axis and the center pore of the disk penetrated by the rod determined the bifurcation type.journal articl
The Role of Momentum Partitioning in Covariance Ion Imaging Analysis
We present results from a covariance ion imaging study, which employs extensive filtering, on the relationship between fragment momenta to gain deeper insight into photofragmentation dynamics. A new data analysis approach is introduced that considers the momentum partitioning between the fragments of the breakup of a molecular polycation to disentangle concurrent fragmentation channels, which yield the same ion species. We exploit this approach to examine the momentum exchange relationship between the products, which provides direct insight into the dynamics of molecular fragmentation. We apply these techniques to extensively characterize the dissociation of 1-iodopropane and 2-iodopropane dications prepared by site-selective ionization of the iodine atom using extreme ultraviolet intense femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 95 eV. Our assignments are supported by classical simulations, using parameters largely obtained directly from the experimental data.journal articl
Multifaceted well‐being experienced by community dwelling older adults engaged in volunteering activities of frailty prevention in Japan
Aim
This study aims to elucidate what volunteering activities mean for older adults in Japan by analyzing their emotions and evaluations from hedonic (e.g., happiness), eudaimonic (e.g., self-growth), and social (e.g., social coherence) well-being.
Methods
The qualitative research was conducted to describe the subjective experience of older adults' volunteering activities (frailty checkups) in the community-setting. Eight older adults were interviewed about their experiences during these activities. The interview data were analyzed from two assumption frameworks: first, three aspects of well-being, and second, timeframes of well-being, during the activity, medium-term, and long-term. Previous studies have not focused on the polysemy or the timeframe of well-being.
Results
Our results showed that hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well-being are not independent, but overlap. Furthermore, even if older adults experience certain emotions at a point of time, they may change in the long term. This implies that it is important to analyze older adults' feelings and experiences from not only one aspect but from different perspectives and measure their feelings not just at a particular moment but in the long term. This is the first empirical study to examine qualitatively the holistic experiences of well-being among older adults who volunteer.
Conclusions
We conclude that this study is unique in that it attempted to associate empirically the experiences of older adults during volunteering with their general psychological status of well-being. These findings could help make volunteering activities more meaningful for older adults and create or promote an active community. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 273–278.journal articl
Magnetic Relaxations of Chromium Nitride Porphyrinato Complexes Driven by the Anisotropic g-Factor
Molecule-based magnetic materials are useful candidates as the spin qubit due to their long coherence time and high designability. The anisotropy of the g-values of the metal complexes can be utilized to access the individual spin of the metal complexes, making it possible to achieve the scalable molecular spin qubit. For this goal, it is important to evaluate the effect of g-value anisotropy on the magnetic relaxation behaviour. This study reports the slow magnetic relaxation behaviour of chromium nitride (CrN2+) porphyrinato complex (1), which is structurally and magnetically similar with the vanadyl (VO2+) porphyrinato complex (2) which is known as the excellent spin qubit. Detailed analyses for vibrational and dynamical magnetism of 1 and 2 revealed that g-value anisotropy accelerates magnetic relaxations greater than the internal magnetic field from nuclear spin does. These results provide a design criterion for construction of multiple spin qubit based on g-tensor engineering.journal articl
Phase Transition Mechanism of ZnMn2O4 Spinel Oxide with Electrochemical Magnesium-Ion Insertion
Spinel oxides with 3d transition metals are expected to be cathode materials with high energy density for magnesium rechargeable batteries. Although it is important to control their phase transitions in order to reduce the polarization during charge/discharge processes for practical use, the relationship between the electrochemical properties and the phase transition mechanism of spinel oxides is not well understood. In this study, we examined the electrochemical properties and the phase transition mechanism of Mg2+ insertion into ZnMn2O4 spinel oxide by using the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and compared them to those of MgMn2O4 spinel oxide. Compared to MgMn2O4, the polarization was relatively small in ZnMn2O4 in the early stage of the Mg2+ insertion process (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) because the ZnMn2O4 spinel phase has a larger solid-solution limit for Mg2+ insertion. On the other hand, in the late stage of the Mg2+ insertion process (0.3 < x ≤ 0.58), the polarization of ZnMn2O4 was larger than that of MgMn2O4 due to the larger volume change between the spinel and rocksalt phases. The finding that the use of zinc stable at the tetrahedral configuration in spinel oxides can expand the solid-solution limit for Mg2+ insertion into the spinel phase and reduce the polarization is significant for the development of cathode materials in magnesium rechargeable batteries.journal articl
