    A general Greenlees–May splitting principle

    In equivariant topology, Greenlees and May used Mackey functors to show that, rationally, the stable homotopy category of G-spectra over a finite group G splits as a product of simpler module categories. We extend the algebraic part (also independently proved by Thévenaz and Webb) of this classical result to Mackey modules over an arbitrary Green functor, and use the case of the complex representation ring Green functor to obtain an algebraic model of the rational equivariant Kasparov category of G-cell algebras

    An integrated precision medicine approach in major depressive disorder: a study protocol to create a new algorithm for the prediction of treatment response

    Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common psychiatric disease worldwide with a huge socio-economic impact. Pharmacotherapy represents the most common option among the first-line treatment choice; however, only about one third of patients respond to the first trial and about 30% are classified as treatment-resistant depression (TRD). TRD is associated with specific clinical features and genetic/gene expression signatures. To date, single sets of markers have shown limited power in response prediction. Here we describe the methodology of the PROMPT project that aims at the development of a precision medicine algorithm that would help early detection of non-responder patients, who might be more prone to later develop TRD. To address this, the project will be organized in 2 phases. Phase 1 will involve 300 patients with MDD already recruited, comprising 150 TRD and 150 responders, considered as extremes phenotypes of response. A deep clinical stratification will be performed for all patients; moreover, a genomic, transcriptomic and miRNomic profiling will be conducted. The data generated will be exploited to develop an innovative algorithm integrating clinical, omics and sex-related data, in order to predict treatment response and TRD development. In phase 2, a new naturalistic cohort of 300 MDD patients will be recruited to assess, under real-world conditions, the capability of the algorithm to correctly predict the treatment outcomes. Moreover, in this phase we will investigate shared decision making (SDM) in the context of pharmacogenetic testing and evaluate various needs and perspectives of different stakeholders toward the use of predictive tools for MDD treatment to foster active participation and patients’ empowerment. This project represents a proof-of-concept study. The obtained results will provide information about the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed approach, with the perspective of designing future clinical trials in which algorithms could be tested as a predictive tool to drive decision making by clinicians, enabling a better prevention and management of MDD resistance

    Beyond oscillations—Toward a richer characterization of brain states

    Our moment-to-moment conscious experience is paced by transitions between states, each one corresponding to a change in the electromagnetic brain activity. One consolidated analytical choice is to characterize these changes in the frequency domain, such that the transition from one state to the other corresponds to a difference in the strength of oscillatory power, often in pre-defined, theory-driven frequency bands of interest. Nonetheless, recent computational advances allow us to explore new ways to characterize electromagnetic brain activity and its changes. Here, we assembled a set of multiple transformations aiming to describe time series in a multidimensional feature space. On an MEG dataset with 29 human participants, we tested how the features extracted in this way described some of those state transitions known to elicit prominent changes in the frequency spectrum, such as eyes-closed versus eyes-open resting-state or the occurrence of visual stimulation. We then compared the informativeness of multiple sets of features by submitting them to a multivariate classifier (SVM). We found that the new features outperformed traditional ones in generalizing states classification across participants. Moreover, some of these new features yielded systematically better decoding accuracy than the power in canonical frequency bands that has been often considered a landmark in defining these state changes. Critically, we replicated these findings, after pre-registration, in an independent EEG dataset (N = 210). In conclusion, the present work highlights the importance of enriching our perspective on the characteristics of electromagnetic brain activity, by considering other features of the signal on top of power in theory-driven frequency bands of interest

    Computed tomography hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch vs. automated perfusion mismatch to identify stroke patients eligible for thrombolysis

    Background and purpose: Automated perfusion imaging can detect stroke patients with unknown time of symptom onset who are eligible for thrombolysis. However, the availability of this technique is limited. We, therefore, established the novel concept of computed tomography (CT) hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch, i.e., an ischemic core lesion visible on cerebral perfusion CT without visible hypodensity in the corresponding native cerebral CT. We compared both methods regarding their accuracy in identifying patients suitable for thrombolysis. Methods: In a retrospective analysis of the MissPerfeCT observational cohort study, patients were classified as suitable or not for thrombolysis based on established time window and imaging criteria. We calculated predictive values for hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch and automated perfusion imaging to compare accuracy in the identification of patients suitable for thrombolysis. Results: Of 247 patients, 219 (88.7%) were eligible for thrombolysis and 28 (11.3%) were not eligible for thrombolysis. Of 197 patients who were within 4.5 h of symptom onset, 190 (96.4%) were identified by hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch and 88 (44.7%) by automated perfusion mismatch (p < 0.001). Of 22 patients who were beyond 4.5 h of symptom onset but were eligible for thrombolysis, 5 patients (22.7%) were identified by hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch. Predictive values for the hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch vs. automated perfusion mismatch were as follows: sensitivity, 89.0% vs. 50.2%; specificity, 71.4% vs. 100.0%; positive predictive value, 96.1% vs. 100.0%; and negative predictive value, 45.5% vs. 20.4%. Conclusion: The novel method of hypoperfusion-hypodensity mismatch can identify patients suitable for thrombolysis with higher sensitivity and lower specificity than established techniques. Using this simple method might therefore increase the proportion of patients treated with thrombolysis without the use of special automated software.     Als Hauptredner trug Robert Menasse diesen Text beim Festakt zum 30-jährigen Bestehen des Hauses der Niederlande am 15. Mai 2025 in der Stadtbücherei Münster vor. Im Haus der Niederlande sind seit 1995 die drei Einrichtungen der Universität Münster untergebracht, die sich mit dem niederländischen Sprach- und Kulturraum beschäftigen: das Institut für Niederländische Philologie (INP), das Zentrum für Niederlande-Studien (ZNS) und die Bibliothek im Haus der Niederlande (BHN). Gemeinsam haben diese drei Institute das Haus in den letzten 30 Jahren als einen Ort der universitären Lehre und Forschung sowie des grenzüberschreitenden Austausches etablieren können. Es ist der Ort an dem Deutsche, Niederländer, Belgier und andere über die Gestaltung der gemeinsamen Zukunft in Europa nachdenken und diskutieren

    Employer attractiveness in the Chemical Industry: Investigating the impact of product novelty, product relevance, and work meaningfulness

    While research on employer attractiveness has traditionally focused on external employer branding, less is known about what attracts employees to stay. This study examines how product-related factors—specifically perceived novelty and societal relevance—relate to internal employer attractiveness, and whether these relationships are mediated by meaningful work. We develop and test a mediation model using two-wave survey data from 138 employees of a global chemical company. Results show that perceived product novelty has a significant positive relationship with employer attractiveness, partially mediated by meaningful work. Perceived product relevance, however, does not show a direct relationship, but an indirect one via meaningful work. These results highlight that perceived product characteristics - beyond traditional HR instruments - can contribute to how employees evaluate their employer. The study extends the internal employer branding literature by integrating product-driven perceptions and meaningfulness into the understanding of organizational attractiveness

    Environmental movements in a material world. A relational perspective on single-use plastic in Penzance, UK

    In the discursive battle about the big and important ideas, some topics are considered more important than others and more likely to mobilize society. More recently, marine plastic pollution has become a key topic for environmental movements. In this study, we aimed to contribute to a more detailed understanding of how specific issues of sustainability are brought forth. Conceptually, we argue that recourse to relational theories from science and technology studies might help to strengthen the conceptualization of social movement research. By drawing on the concept of "boundary objects", we extend the range of social movement approaches in order to better understand how the process of framing is put to work materially. The focus on boundary objects can therefore explain the selective formation of environmental discourses and policies when applied to the field of environmental protection and sustainability
