    Fault location on radial distribution networks via distributed synchronized traveling wave detectors

    Wolfs, PJ ORCiD: 0000-0001-7048-1231This paper presents a new fault location algorithm for radial distribution networks employing synchronized distributed voltage traveling wave (TW) observers. A robust and accurate fault location algorithm significantly improves the distribution networks reliability and reduces the risk of bush fires and electrocution resulting from sustained undetected faults. The medium voltage distribution networks include numerous junctions and many shunt and series connected devices, such as capacitor banks, transformers and cables, which makes fault location far more complicated. This paper investigates the effect of power system components on the propagation of traveling waves and proposes a method for a fault location in heavily branched radial distribution feeders. Results show that parasitic shunt capacitances in transformers have a significant impact on traveling time of incident waves to the location of the TW observers and compensation for this effect will improve the accuracy of fault location

    Identifying and solving issues with acquiring skills in computer programming for non-English speakers

    Nnass, IA ORCiD: 0000-0001-8304-3943Since computers have become widely used, programming has become a critical skill, as indicated by a recent push by many governments to make it a core part of the secondary school curriculum. Programming languages are built upon English language words and phrases like “for” and “while”, as well as concepts framed in English, like the idea of an “if” statement, representing a choice. It is possible that this could make learning an English-based programming language for non-English language speakers especially challenging. So, what solutions could be developed to solve the problem? With this question in mind, this research investigates non-English language speakers’ grasp of programming. This research started with the question of whether or not needing to understand English would be an extra challenge for students learning programming. Experience from the researcher’s own practice suggested that this was the case; however, what did the literature indicate? An extensive literature review revealed that, in actuality, the literature did not say much. While many focused on solutions to teaching programming, and some researchers focused on the problems that led to these solutions, very few researchers made any distinction between the language capabilities of novices. Even among those projects that were conducted in non-English speaking countries, little attention was given to the demographics of the cohort of participants, and what this meant to the results presented. Based on the literature, this research study highlights issues that directly influence beginners learning programming, looking particularly at the difficulties faced by those that do not have English as a first language. So, the task became to determine whether English was an issue in learning programming or not. A major contribution of this work to the theory and the literature is the observation that issues with programming are different for English language speakers and non-English language speakers. This is something that has not been sufficiently highlighted in the literature in the past. The other contribution of this work is to practice, with the suggestion that strategies such as guidebooks and block programming can help to solve the problems with error messages and syntax for all students. Future work in the area should build upon this contribution, looking to expand experiments on how to solve this issue for non-English language speakers through interventions like those that were trialled. In this way, a greater uptake of programming by all students, both English language speakers and non-English language speakers, can be achieved

    Writing systematic, scoping, and app reviews: Summarising and appraising best evidence

To continue to support authors to submit the highest quality review articles, this editorial presents further guidance on the kinds of reviews BJOT prioritises for consideration for publication. It also provides information on the critical appraisal and quality review tools that authors can use to review both literature and health applications (software ‘apps’). When submitting a review, please also see the journal’s web page and submission guidance for information on our current policy regarding review submission, as this information changes as we update and revise our priorities for the journal. For example, at present we particularly encourage systematic reviews, and we plan to include at least one systematic review in any special issue

    The association between workload, sleep, and performance in basketball players

    Fox, J ORCiD: 0000-0001-8367-5297In basketball, delivering appropriate workload stimuli while managing recovery between training sessions and competition is essential to promote favourable adaptations in players and to optimise performance. Sleep is a modifiable factor recognised as one of the most effective recovery interventions available to basketball players. While workload and sleep are conceptually important for player performance, investigations directly examining the associations between workload, sleep, and performance in basketball players are limited. To address this gap, the aims of this thesis were to: 1) review current literature to identify the associations between workload and performance in team sports; 2) review current literature examining sleep in athletes, including factors affecting sleep and subsequent performance; 3) examine player monitoring approaches used by basketball coaches, along with barriers and facilitators to player monitoring; 4) assess the impact of training and game workloads on sleep duration and sleep quality in basketball players; 5) determine the associations between acute player workloads and in-game performance; and 6) identify the cumulative effects of sleep over 1-4 nights prior to competition on in-game performance. Review of the literature revealed limited available research on the association between workload and performance in team sports including basketball. Furthermore, investigations documenting the associations between workload and sleep, and sleep and performance in athletes are lacking. The online survey demonstrated that while basketball practitioners find potential value in player monitoring, the implementation of monitoring is limited. One of the primary barriers to implementing player monitoring in basketball is a lack of understanding regarding which outcomes should be monitored, and how player monitoring data should be utilised in practice. As such, the overall findings of this thesis are extremely valuable to basketball practitioners given insight is provided regarding scenarios which may leave players susceptible to poor sleep as well as identifying which workload and sleep variables may be most useful to monitor in practice to optimise performance potential of players. The original research reported in this thesis revealed that following games where physical (PlayerLoad [PL]) and perceptual (session-rating of perceived exertion [sRPE]) demands were high, sleep duration was significantly restricted in basketball players, which may have implications for recovery following competition. Regarding workload, all investigated variables possessed non-significant relationships with in-game performance. However, overall and high-intensity external workload (PL and high-intensity inertial movement analysis [IMA] events [accelerations, decelerations, changes of direction, and jumps combined]) accumulated over the 7 days prior to competition and expressed per minute revealed small, positive associations with in-game performance in basketball players. For sleep variables, sleep efficiency captured 1 night prior to competition and subjective sleep quality accumulated over 1, 2, 3, and 4 nights prior to competition were significantly associated with in-game performance in basketball players. Furthermore, later wake times were significantly associated with favourable in-game performance in basketball players. In combination, the thesis findings support routine monitoring of player workloads and sleep across the season; however, monitoring of acute sleep variables may be more important to understand in-game performance potential than monitoring of acute workload variables in basketball players. Specifically, following competition, particularly where in-game workload demands are high, sleep duration in players appears particularly important to monitor. Suboptimal sleep duration following competition may be mitigated by adjusting training or travel schedules that enable players to increase their opportunity for sleep via later wake times. Basketball practitioners should implement objective and subjective monitoring of sleep quality leading into competition and avoid early wake times where possible to maximise sleep duration and promote favorable in-game performance

    Winging it: Key issues and perceptions around regulation and practice of aircraft maintenance in Australian General Aviation

    Naweed, A ORCiD: 0000-0002-5534-4295The very diverse character of General Aviation (GA) within Australia poses challenges for its effective management of risk and safety in the sector. Improvements for human performance and perceptions of safety within the maintenance environment are among the areas which regulators have targeted for continuous improvement. This paper provides a timely empirical exploration of maintenance engineer perspectives around: (1) Changes in the role of the regulator/regulation that have impacted the sector and diminished safe operations; and (2) specific practical and operational challenges that the GA industry must deal with to sustain safe operations going forward. A thematic analysis of transcribed qualitative data revealed five key themes and identified a number of key issues from sector changes including a decline in training and education, drift in working practices, and wider power-distance gap. Issues with auditing and bureaucratization, negative safety climate, and underlying values and philosophies were also found. Practical and operational challenges going forward included an array of concerns associated with safety, the mismatch between GA and commercial aviation, workforce development and the financial burden in the sector. The results draw attention to the interconnectedness between various components of the GA system, and carry timely implications for regulation in the GA sector. Future research directions are discussed

    The WIL to learn: Students’ perspectives on the impact of work-integrated learning placements on their professional readiness

Under recent Australian government initiatives affecting teacher education, placement forms of WIL have been touted as the panacea for perceived problems with graduate teacher quality; resulting in the national regulation of placement design and length in this discipline. This article reports the findings of a qualitative study into the perspectives of fifteen teacher education students from one regional Australian university. The study investigated these students’ placement experiences and the impact of these experiences on their perceptions of readiness for a career in the teaching profession. Thematic analysis is the method used to identify two key themes in the data collected through semi-structured interviews. Despite recognising the benefits of real-world opportunities for skill development and practice inherent in WIL placement experiences, the study highlights important limitations of these forms of WIL on the development of professional readiness arising from the contextual features of particular placement sites; relationships with workplace supervisors and performance pressure associated with assessment during placements. These findings not only confirm the importance of social processes in the preparation of work-ready graduates but question reliance on placement forms of WIL learning for nurturing graduates’ readiness for professional work. © 2019, © 2019 HERDSA

    Quantification and distribution of a Tetragonula carbonaria swarm (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

    Johnson, JB ORCiD: 0000-0002-9172-8587Manual mark-by-mark image analysis was used to quantify the number of individuals present in a Tetragonula carbonaria swarm. A total of 7328 bees were identified in the swarm. The distribution of individuals within the swarm followed a Gaussian distribution, with the distances to the nearest neighbour strongly positively skewed. The clustering of bees in the centre of the swarm is likely a mechanism for reducing predation risk. In the case of male mating swarms, large aggregations may increase the mating success of the species. © 2020 Korean Society of Applied Entomolog

    How to manage travel fatigue and jet lag in athletes? A systematic review of interventions

    Lastella, AM ORCiD: 0000-0003-1793-3811; Sargent, C ORCiD: 0000-0001-5340-4701; Vincent, GE ORCiD: 0000-0002-7036-7823Objectives: We investigated the management of travel fatigue and jet lag in athlete populations by evaluating studies that have applied non-pharmacological interventions (exercise, sleep, light and nutrition), and pharmacological interventions (melatonin, sedatives, stimulants, melatonin analogues, glucocorticoids and antihistamines) following long-haul transmeridian travel-based, or laboratory-based circadian system phase-shifts. Design: Systematic review Eligibility criteria Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), and non-RCTs including experimental studies and observational studies, exploring interventions to manage travel fatigue and jet lag involving actual travel-based or laboratory-based phase-shifts. Studies included participants who were athletes, except for interventions rendering no athlete studies, then the search was expanded to include studies on healthy populations. Data sources: Electronic searches in PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar and SPORTDiscus from inception to March 2019. We assessed included articles for risk of bias, methodological quality, level of evidence and quality of evidence. Results: Twenty-two articles were included: 8 non-RCTs and 14 RCTs. No relevant travel fatigue papers were found. For jet lag, only 12 athlete-specific studies were available (six non-RCTs, six RCTs). In total (athletes and healthy populations), 11 non-pharmacological studies (participants 600; intervention group 290; four non-RCTs, seven RCTs) and 11 pharmacological studies (participants 1202; intervention group 870; four non-RCTs, seven RCTs) were included. For non-pharmacological interventions, seven studies across interventions related to actual travel and four to simulated travel. For pharmacological interventions, eight studies were based on actual travel and three on simulated travel. Conclusions: We found no literature pertaining to the management of travel fatigue. Evidence for the successful management of jet lag in athletes was of low quality. More field-based studies specifically on athlete populations are required with a multifaceted approach, better design and implementation to draw valid conclusions.
