Beaches scatter the majority of the Australian island coastline, and regardless of specific location, beach landscapes play a thriving role in building a region’s identity. One way of investigating how the landscape emerges as a site of meaning-making for a region is to examine the emergence of curated, site-specific arts festivals in the location. This chapter examines how arts and sculpture festivals utilise the landscape (beachscape) to encourage participants’ engagement with the artworks. A spatial analysis has been used to incorporate both arts and tourism perspectives and examine three case studies of regional Queensland arts festivals: Currumbin’s SWELL Sculpture Festival, Noosa’s Floating Land festival, and Townsville’s Strand Ephemera festival. The findings suggest that the beachscape functions as more than a backdrop and is instead a site of meaning-making by enabling festival participants to engage with both the artworks and the beachscape

    Fakamuria, K ORCiD: 0000-0001-5598-0438Schools in the Republic of Vanuatu began using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the mid-1990s for learning and teaching. The rationale given then for using ICT was that it would improve learning and prepare students for the future work force. Over the years however, it was observed that the practice of integrating ICT into schools was not systematic and this led to the implementation of many school information systems (SIS) that could not be sustained over the long term. This research set out to explore factors that had an impact on the sustainable integration of ICT into schools in Vanuatu. The research used an exploratory case study methodology to examine ICT implementation practices in schools and factors in the school external context that had an impact on ICT implementation in schools. Sustainability literature was used to explore ICT integration into schools in other settings and to examine factors identified in these settings that were considered important to SIS sustainability in the Vanuatu school setting. The findings of the research revealed three broad categories of factors that impacted on SIS sustainability in Vanuatu schools: the first category was concerned with the importance of using standard information systems development methodologies and practices to implement and operate the SIS; the second was concerned with the importance of the school as an organisation within the Vanuatu school system to align the SIS’s functions to its strategic school objectives while at the same time adapting itself to accommodate the SIS; and the third category was concerned with the importance of taking into account the impact of external factors on the integration of ICT to schools. These include such physical factors as the remoteness of small islands, the contributions of the school stakeholder community to SIS development and support and the influence of Vanuatu traditional culture. The findings of the research have been used to develop a set of guidelines for the establishment of a sustainable school information system (SIS) in Vanuatu

    The future for ATBC conservation declarations

    Turton, SM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6279-7682The Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) is the world's largest international and professional organization whose mission is to promote research, education, and communication about the world's tropical ecosystems. A core component of ATBC’s mandate is to engage in conservation science and capacity-building activities on a global and regional basis. It therefore has a critical role to play in advocating the use of science and other evidence-based approaches to inform conservation practices and policies at local, national, and global levels, as described further in the 2015–2025 Strategic Plan.1 The main purpose of our commentary is to enlighten members of ATBC and the wider tropical conservation community of the importance and value of ATBC conference declarations as instruments for identifying and tackling significant conservation issues across the tropics. We also share our combined insights and recommendations on how to prepare, deliver, and evaluate any future ATBC conference declarations

    The effect of ethanol-methanol-diesel-microalgae blends on performance, combustion and emissions of a direct injection diesel engine

    Azad, M ORCiD: 0000-0001-8258-6057To explore the effect of hybrid fuels containing microalgae, ethanol, methanol and diesel fuel (base fuel) were blends on combustion, performance and emission characteristics and compare with base fuel. The hybrid fuels were calculated using a single-cylinder, four-stroke, naturally aspirated engine, water-cooled, direct injection, diesel engine was used for the experiments under 20%, 50%, 75%, 100% load and simulated by using a thermodynamic engine simulation tool software. The results show that engine brake torque (EBT) of hybrid fuel (ethanol) emulsions were found to be high and exhaust gas temperature to be low compared with that of base fuel. Hybrid fuel (methanol) emulsions helps to increase the cylinder pressure. With the hybrid fuels blend, the ignition delay period and combustion duration of hybrid fuel blends is increased. With the addition of spirulina microalgae, the ignition delay period of spirulina microalgae-diesel blend fuel is shortened. Engine emission results indicated that spirulina microalgae emulsions fuel reduces the specific particulate matter (PM), soot and smoke emissions except nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions but carbon dioxide (CO2) emission to be higher compared with base fuel

But are restauranteurs’ views of the importance of car parking to their trade in line with reality? To explore this question this study surveyed restaurant businesses and customers in parallel at three restaurant precincts in inner-city Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The survey results indicate that restauranteurs and restaurant patrons have asymmetric views about the role of parking and the way it affects restaurant spend. This paper identifies two very different market segments when exploring the customer's travel mode preferences to access restaurants. These two segments are influenced by the built environment in their choice of restaurant location which in turn, gives implications for planning practice. The results show the way in which customers access a restaurant is influenced by the built environment of the location of restaurant. The analysis has also highlighted that an investigation of trip chaining behaviour as part of the access decision for dining would be a future avenue for research. This paper provides evidentiary support for planning policy in relation to parking. On the one hand, this paper shows how planning authorities can make better decisions about transport infrastructure supply and parking control in conjunction with the restaurant sector. On the other hand planners can use the outcome of this paper as a way to help businesses to understand that sustainable transport options may, contrary to their view, be beneficial to their bottom line

    Citrate esterification of debranched waxy maize starch: Structural, physicochemical and amylolysis properties

    Strappe, P ORCiD: 0000-0003-0100-0558Considering that the content of resistant starch (RS) in original starch is very low, chemical modification is one of choices to increase RS level for enhancing its application. The current study applied debranched waxy maize starch (DBS) to produce a citrate-esterified debranched starch (CADS) and investigated impact of the modification on RS formation. Native starch was also citrate esterified without debranching treatment as the control (CANS). Physicochemical and digestion properties of each sample were characterized, and the results indicated an absorption at 1724 cm −1 in FTIR spectrum was determined in either CADS or CANS, indicating the occurrence of the esterification. Debranching of starch molecules led to a higher degree of substitution (DS) of 0.793 for CADS than CANS. Furthermore, re-association of debranched starch achieved a B type crystalline pattern rather than an A type from its native starch granules. Esterification greatly destroyed crystalline regions until completely disappeared in CADS. The loss of crystalline region was highly consistent with the absence of endothermic peak both in CADS and CANS as revealed by DSC. Hydrolysis rate and digestibility of each sample followed the order: native starch > DBS > CANS > CADS, which may indicate that the introduction of the citric anhydride onto the starch molecules led to an increased space steric hindrance that delayed the enzyme contacting within glucosidic bonds. It could be the first report to prepare a citrate-esterified debranched starch with a higher resistance to amylolysis, and the current investigation may highlight a potent to produce a starch derivative with a higher RS content. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

    Analysis of the physiochemical properties of rice induced by postharvest yellowing during storage

    Strappe, P ORCiD: 0000-0003-0100-0558© 2019 Pasting properties indicated that the yellowing process led to a reduced peak viscosity and breakdown value of the postharvest yellowing (PHY) rice compared to corresponding normal one. More importantly, the current study revealed that both moduli of G′ and G″ of the gel formed from the PHY rice was lower than that of its corresponding rice and the yellowing significantly reduced the area of the hysteresis curve. Thus, it is proposed that PHY may inhibit the formation of a continuous network structure. Studies of moisture absorption dynamics and low-field NMR suggested that the yellowing process led to a faster moisture absorption and de-absorption, indicating a faster moisture fluidity in rice kernels induced by yellowing process. Potent of the “capillary channels” might be formed during rice yellowing, and these structural characteristics may be associated with its higher digestibility due to the accelerated diffusion of the digestive enzymes in rice kernels

Introduction Current perspectives present feedback as a dynamic, dialogic process. It is widely accepted that feedback can have an impact on workplace performance, however, how dialogic feedback is enacted with the learner in authentic healthcare settings is less apparent. This paper seeks to describe the design and development of an implementation study to promote the learner voice in the feedback process and improve feedback encounters between learners and learning partners in healthcare settings. Methods and analysis A quasi-experimental study design will be used to evaluate whether implementation of a work-based intervention to improve feedback impacts student performance during clinical placements in healthcare settings. Student performance will be measured at three time points: baseline (pre), mid-placement (post-Test 1) and end-placement (post-Test 2) in keeping with standard assessment processes of the participating university. The intervention is underpinned by Normalisation Process Theory and involves a layered design that targets learners and learning partners using best-practice education strategies. Data regarding participants' engagement with feedback during clinical placements and participants' level of adoption of the intervention will be collected at the completion of the clinical placement period. Ethics and dissemination This study has ethics approval from both Griffith University and Metro South Health Human Research and Ethics committees. Dissemination of results will be local, national and international through forums, seminars, conferences and publications. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020
