Synthesis of MOF@aluminum saline slag-based composites for CO2 capture at moderate temperatures
Combining metal–organic framework (MOF) materials and aluminum-containing saline slag residues opens a promising research avenue. This approach reduces the environmental impact of aluminum production by integrating industrial waste in the development of advanced materials that adhere to circular economy principles. It also addresses some inherent stability issues observed in pure MOFs. This study is the first to propose the use of this industrial by-product as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly modulator for controlling the phase transition between MIL-96(Al) and MIL-110(Al). For the first time, novel MOFs composites (MOF@RW1*-n; n = 25, 50, 75% waste) and saline slag waste (RW1*)—a by-product of initial aluminum extraction in an acidic medium—were synthesized in situ by preparing the MOF on RW1* via hydrothermal treatment and subsequently tested as CO2 adsorbents at up to 225 ◦C and 80 kPa. The optimized RW1* content in the composite proved critical in determining the formation of specific crystalline structures (MIL-96(Al) or MIL-110(Al)), ultimately yielding hybrid materials with enhanced textural properties and thermal stability. The authors are grateful for financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, EU) and the Government of Navarra (Department of Rural Development and Environment, Waste Fund 2023) through projects PID2023-146935OB-C21, PID2023-146935OB-C22 and 0011-4387-2023-000001.
Introduction: out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major public health issue, with
relatively poor survival rates regarding favorable neurological outcome (CPC 1–2 less
than 10%). Some patients do not respond to conventional advanced life support (ALS)
measures. The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenaLon (ECMO) in the seang of
refractory OHCA has recently been proposed as an alternative in these cases.
Objectives: to analyze the current evidence on extracorporeal cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (ECPR) in refractory OHCA, comparing its effectiveness to ALS.
Additionally, to identify predictive factors of successful CPR.
To design a care protocol for the treatment of refractory OHCA with ECPR in
Navarra.
Material and Methods: a literature review was conducted in PubMed and Cochrane databases
(January 2014 – February 2025). 15 original studies with primary data and defined
protocols were selected.
Results: in the 15 selected studies, 1,234 patients received treatment with ECPR. In 6
of them, survival with CPC 1–2 was higher in the ECPR group compared to the
conventional ALS group. A shorter time from initial diagnosis of cardiac arrest until
the start of ECPR was associated with higher survival rates with favorable neurological
outcomes (CPC 1–2) and was identified as a predictive factor. Likewise, patients with
shockable rhythms showed higher survival rates with favorable neurological
outcomes.
Conclusions: ECPR represents a logistical challenge and requires interdisciplinary
collaboration for its implementation. The literature suggests that ECPR may improve
survival rates with CPC 1–2 in selected patients.Graduado o Graduada en Medicina por la Universidad Pública de NavarraMedikuntzan graduatua Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
Wine for the new generation: exploring youth consumption patterns in Navarra
This market study explores the consumption of wine among young people in Navarra, with
the goal of providing insights and strategic recommendations for the local winery Bodega
Tandem. The research focuses on consumers aged between 18 and 25, a demographic group
increasingly disconnected from traditional wine culture. Even though Navarra has a strong
winemaking heritage, the industry struggles to engage younger audiences. The study
combines a complete market analysis (characteristics, regulations, trends...), a theoretical
framework on consumer behavior and theories combined with the latest empirical results
linked to the topic, and finally a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews. These
interviews were conducted with young individuals from Navarra, and organized into three
thematic blocks: habits and motivations, perceptions and associations, and product and
communication opportunities. Results show that wine is often perceived as complex, formal,
and less accessible than beer or mixed drinks. Key barriers include price sensitivity, lack of
knowledge, and limited adaptability to casual settings. However, participants also pointed to
opportunities related to design, branding, digital communication, events and sustainability.
The study concludes with practical suggestions for Bodega Tandem to better connect with
younger consumers. By adapting their strategies to this audience's preferences and values, the
winery can position itself more effectively in a changing market and build stronger
relationships with future generations of wine drinkers.Graduado o Graduada Internacional en Administración y Dirección de Empresas/Graduado o Graduada Internacional en Economía por la Universidad Pública de NavarraEnpresen Administrazio eta Zuzendaritzan Nazioarteko Graduatua / Ekonomian Nazioarteko Graduatua Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa

The influence of loneliness, social support and income on mental well-being
Mental well-being is a multifaceted concept that reflects emotional stability, psychological resilience and social connectedness. This study examines how demographic factors, perceived loneliness, and social support influence mental well-being in Spain. Participants were surveyed online and provided personal information along with responses to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale, the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). Our findings support previous research on mental well-being in Spain and again show significant associations between income, loneliness, social support and overall mental health. In particular, perceived loneliness was found to be a strong predictor of mental well-being. Furthermore, income and social support were found to partially mediate the relationship between loneliness and mental well-being. These findings highlight the critical role of social connections and financial stability in promoting mental health. Overall, this research contributes to the growing understanding of the factors influencing mental well-being and provides valuable insights for improving mental health outcomes
External validation of cardiovascular risk scores in patients with Type 2 diabetes using the Spanish population-based CARDIANA cohort
Aims. There is an overabundance of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk-prediction models applicable to patients with Type 2 diabetes (T2D), but most of them still require external validation. Our aim was to assess the performance of 18 CVD risk scores in a Spanish cohort of patients with T2D.
Methods and results. The CARdiovascular Risk in patients with DIAbetes in Navarra (CARDIANA) cohort, which includes 20 793 individuals with T2D and no history of CVD, was used to externally validate 13 models developed in patients with T2D [Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease (ADVANCE), Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities, Basque Country Prospective Complications and Mortality Study risk engine, Cardiovascular Healthy Study, Diabetes Cohort Study, DIAL2, DIAL2-extended, Fremantle, Kaasenbrood, Swedish National Diabetes Register (NDR), PREDICT1-diabetes, SCORE2-diabetes, and Wan] and 5 models developed in the general population (ASCVD, PREVENT-basic, PREVENT-full, QRISK2, and SCORE2). Harrell's C-statistic and calibration plots were used as measures of discrimination and calibration, respectively. There were 991 incident CVD events within 5 years of follow-up, resulting in a cumulative incidence of 5.0% (95% confidence interval 4.7-5.3). Discrimination ability was moderate for all the models, with SCORE2-diabetes, NDR, PREDICT1-diabetes, PREVENT-full, Wan, ADVANCE, and both DIAL2 models showing the highest C-index values. All models showed good calibration, although most of them required recalibration, with the exception of ADVANCE-, DIAL2-, and SCORE2-related models.
Conclusion. In our context, models derived for or adapted to diabetes patients, as well as models derived in the general population but incorporating diabetes-related metabolic measures (such as Hb1Ac) as predictors, demonstrated better performance than the others. DIAL2, DIAL2-extended, SCORE2-diabetes, and ADVANCE showed optimal calibration even without recalibration, which implies greater applicability, especially for SCORE2-diabetes and ADVANCE because of their simplicity.
Lay summary. There are many tools to predict cardiovascular risk for patients with Type 2 diabetes (T2D), but most of them need to be validated in other contexts. This study evaluates the performance of 18 risk-prediction tools in a Spanish cohort of patients with T2D (CARDIANA). Five models (DIAL2, DIAL2-extended, SCORE2-diabetes, PREDICT1-diabetes, and Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease (ADVANCE)], specially designed for people with diabetes, together with the PREVENT-full model, designed for the general population but including diabetes-related metabolic control measures, such as Hb1Ac as a predictor, demonstrated the best accuracy in predicting cardiovascular risk for Spanish patients with T2D, with the DIAL2-extended model performing best, closely followed by the SCORE2-diabetes and ADVANCE models, which are easier to use in clinical settings for their simplicity. This research provides valuable and updated information on CVD risk-prediction models for patients with T2D. These results may help clinicians to choose the most suitable risk-prediction tool for their specific clinical setting and patient population and may help healthcare providers make better decisions regarding preventive interventions and patient care, improving healthcare quality and efficiency. This research was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, via grant PI15/02196, and via CONCEPT project (grants PI19/00154 and PI19/00381). Irrigation agriculture and income redistribution
This paper advances the hypothesis and establishes empirically that the adoption of irrigation agriculture during the preindustrial era is a predictor of current cross-country differences in income redistribution. Countries whose populations historically relied on irrigation agriculture as their primary subsistence mode tend to exhibit lower levels of redistribution today, confirming that certain historical practices related to agriculture can have lasting effects on present-day outcomes. The research employs several empirical strategies to address concerns about the potential endogeneity of ancestral irrigation, including an instrumental variable approach that exploits cross-country variation in irrigation suitability. Furthermore, the results remain unaffected after controlling for an extensive set of geographic, historical and contemporary factors that may be correlated with both historical irrigation and redistribution. The analysis also reveals that the contribution of ancestral irrigation to income redistribution has partly operated through its impact on the individualistic-collectivist dimension of culture and political institutions.Open Access funding provided by Universidad Pública de Navarra. Rhizosphere bacteria isolates from drylands promote alfalfa (Medicago sativa var. Capitana) establishment under nitrogen-limited conditions.
Nitrogen deficit in cultivable soils is one of the main challenges nowadays to obtain high and sustainable crop yields. This limitation is particularly aggravated in arid and semi-arid soils, where N availability is strongly influenced by precipitation. While nitrogen fertilizers are widely over-used to overcome nitrogen deficiency, over-application can alter soil characteristics as pH and structure and disrupt microbial communities. In this context, plant-associated microorganisms, especially nitrogen-fixing bacteria, play a pivotal role in enhancing soil fertility and supporting plant growth through key interactions with the rhizosphere. Despite their potential to support plant growth in nutrient-poor conditions, degraded or marginal soils, the plant microbe interactions under nitrogen-limited conditions, particularly in drylands remain insufficiently understood. Understanding these dynamics represents an important step toward developing sustainable agricultural practices.
This study evaluates the potential effects of four bacterial genera -Bacillus spp., Sinorhizobium spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Variovorax spp.- isolated from the rhizosphere of Medicago sativa var. Capitana (alfalfa) growing in the dryland soils of Bardenas Reales (Navarra-Spain), to support seed germination and plant development of alfalfa under nitrogen-free conditions. Two complementary experiments were conducted: a germination essay to assess the impact of bacterial inoculation on alfalfa seed germination rates, and a plant growth experiment comparing seed-priming (pre-germination inoculation) and plant-priming (post-germination inoculation). A range of physiological (chlorophyll content, EVT, stomatal conductance) and morphological (shoot, root and total length and fresh weight, secondary roots number, nodulation, leaves number and leaf area) parameters were measured.
Bacterial presence had no significant effect on alfalfa seeds germination. In contrast, inoculation substantially improved plant growth, specially when bacteria were applied after germination. In
plant-priming treatments Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Variovorax spp. showed more pronounced positive effects on plant performance than Sinorhizobium spp., although the
combined inoculation of all four bacteria demonstrated synergistic benefits. Each genus influences specific aspects of plant development: Bacillus spp. mainly enhanced aerial development, while Pseudomonas spp. and Variovorax spp. promote both aerial and root development. The combined inoculation of all four bacteria potentiates overall plant development more than treatments with any single species.
These findings suggest that target bacteria inoculation after germination may support alfalfa cultivation in nutrient-poor and degraded soils, potentially reducing the need for nitrogen fertilizers. This contributes to a more sustainable agricultural model in drylands systems affected by climate change, by leveraging rhizosphere microbial communities to enhance plant productivity and resilience.Máster Universitario en Agrobiología AmbientalUnibertsitate Masterra Ingurumen Agrobiologia
Stress and emotional overload played a crucial role in both the personal and professional lives of healthcare
professionals during and after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Burnout is a common illness among healthcare
professionals. Currently, certain factors that impact the health of nursing professionals, such as emotional
exhaustion, remain prevalent. Gender, age, marital status, or the number of children do not appear to
contribute as much to the development of burnout, while workload, shift work, and social support appear
to be more determining factors. Techniques such as consciously paying attention to the experience of the
moment derived from mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral skills such as self-instruction, or viewing activities
as challenges and enjoying them, have been shown to be effective in the treatment and prevention of
burnout. Preventive strategies should not simply aim to reduce burnout, but rather promote a positive mental
state based on regular practice by both the individual and the institutions or organizations in order to achieve
satisfactory results.Máster Universitario en Prevención de Riesgos Laborales por la Universidad Pública de NavarraLaneko Arriskuen Prebentzioko Unibertsitate Masterra Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
