Asymmetries between the climate responses to CO2 and stratospheric aerosol forcing

    No full text
Understanding Earth’s temperature response to radiative perturbations is pivotal in climate science, as emphasized in the World Climate Research Program’s Grand Challenge on Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity. Surprisingly, a radiative perturbation from stratospheric aerosol produces a smaller temperature response than a radiative perturbation of the same magnitude from CO2. Resolving this apparent paradox is the core motivation behind this thesis, with the ambition to understand the atmospheric processes that cause this climate response asymmetry. The climate response asymmetry can be quantified by the feedback parameter, which is more negative (i. e., more stabilizing) for stratospheric aerosol than CO2 forcing. The pattern effect framework provides a modern interpretation of variations of the feedback parameter in time. I apply this framework to explain differences of the feedback parameter among forcing agents, in this particular case between CO2 and stratospheric aerosol forcing. I employ an earth system modelling approach, testing hypotheses with simulations with the general circulation model MPI-ESM 1.2, and demonstrating the identified key mechanisms in the CMIP6 multi model ensemble. I identify two essential ingredients to explain the climate response asymmetry between CO2 and stratospheric aerosol forcing: temperature change in the warm pool (tropical Indian and Western Pacific Ocean, 30°S - 30°N, 50°E - 160°W), and the Brewer-Dobson circulation. I show that the warm pool is the dominant region causing feedback differences between CO2 and stratospheric aerosol forcing. In an ensemble of 120 decadal simulations forced with CO2 and stratospheric aerosol forcing, a simple measure for warm pool temperature change explains 50 % of the variance of the feedback parameter. I prove that the warm pool cools particularly strongly from stratospheric aerosol forcing, and that the stratospheric circulation is a key ingredient to explain this. Stratospheric aerosol heats the stratosphere, leading to an acceleration of the Brewer-Dobson circulation and hence to an increased poleward energy transport. This provides additional cooling to the tropical surface that is not reflected in the forcing pattern at the top of the atmosphere, highlighting the role of surface forcing for understanding the evolution of temperature patterns. My results engender conclusions about climate feedback beyond the response to stratospheric aerosol forcing. To understand temperature pattern formation, the surface forcing must be considered, which is in contrast to the established method of measuring forcing at the top of the atmosphere. Although climate feedback mainly refers to processes at the surface and in the troposphere, I show that the stratospheric circulation influences surface forcing patterns and thus temperature patterns and feedback

Phthalate esters (PAEs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as plasticizers and flame retardants in various industrial and consumer products, making them ubiquitous in the environment. Both PAEs and OPEs persist in the environment and can accumulate in organisms. They are currently of environmental concern due to their toxicity and endocrine-disrupting effects. Understanding their distribution and transport in marine environments is very important for assessing their environmental impact and developing mitigation strategies. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the distribution patterns and transport mechanisms of PAEs and OPEs in the Chinese marginal seas, with a particular focus on the roles of air-sea exchanges in these processes. In the South China Sea, atmospheric concentrations of OPEs ranged from 66 to 550 pg/m³, while seawater concentrations averaged 1180 ± 910 pg/L. Air-sea exchange fluxes indicated volatilization of some OPEs and deposition of others. Atmospheric particle deposition fluxes ranged from 5 to 71 ng/m²/day. The input of ∑OPEs via atmospheric deposition was estimated at 22 ± 19 tons/year, with net fluxes indicating volatilization from seawater to air at 44 ± 33 tons/year. PAEs were measured in the air and seawater of the Bohai and Yellow Seas in spring 2019. Atmospheric PAE concentrations ranged from 9.59 to 51.3 ng/m³, with seawater concentrations averaging 466 ± 268 ng/L. In summer 2019, PAEs in the South China Sea showed atmospheric concentrations ranging from 2.84 to 24.3 ng/m³ and seawater concentrations averaging 3.05 ng/L. Monsoon currents and cyclones significantly influence their concentrations and transport. The input of ∑PAEs via atmospheric deposition was about 579 ± 222 tons/year, with net fluxes showing a predominance of PAEs moving from seawater to air at 1540 ± 1430 tons/year in the Bohai and Yellow Seas. In the South China Sea, net atmospheric depositions were 3740 tons/year for DMP, DEP, DiBP, and DnBP, and DEHP volatilization was 900 tons/year. Additionally, sedimentation has been identified as a significant sink for PAEs in the Bohai and Yellow Seas, with an inventory of 20.73 tons/year in the Bohai Sea and 65.87 tons/year in the Yellow Sea. These results suggest that air-sea exchange and atmospheric deposition are important processes in the transport of PAEs and OPEs in the Chinese marginal seas

Unfortunately, there are no guidelines or uniform recommendations for pediatric mechanical ventilation even though it is a vital and highly complex treatment strategy that poses a challenge even for experienced intensive care medical personnel. We sought out to significantly improve the theoretical and practical knowledge of our employees through our interprofessional educational initiative. Additionally, we wanted to standardize our ventilation management in our intensive care units and thus improve the quality of care. Furthermore, we aimed to increase the adherence to patient-specific treatment goals to >90% in the first twelve months after intervention. Using OSCE exams, multiple-choice tests and an educational film we were able to train our employees in pediatric mechanical ventilation. In addition, pocket cards and checklists in the intensive care units guaranteed significant long-term learning success. Clinical checks of the ventilation parameters and display settings, as well as of the ventilators themselves, showed that the educational initiative also significantly improved compliance with treatment goals and that the target of >90% was successfully achieved

Radar rainfall observations at sub-kilometre and sub-minute scales

Knowledge of the true rainfall variability at sub-kilometre and sub-hourly scales is required for several meteorological and hydrological applications, especially in urban areas due to the large proportion of impervious surfaces and the stormwater infrastructure. However, variability at these scales is a blind spot for both operational rain gauge networks and operational radar networks. In the urban area of Hamburg, rainfall measurements of a local area X-band weather radar (LAWR) operating at high temporal (30 s), range (60 m), and azimuthal sampling (1°) resolutions within a 20 km scan radius address this observational gap. This dissertation provides new insights into (urban) rainfall variability based on the reanalysis of multi-year high-resolution weather radar observations. In a first study, the reanalysis of the raw radar data is described in detail, the radar performance for the years 2013 to 2021 is outlined, and open issues and limitations of the data set are discussed. Several sources of radar-based errors were adjusted gradually affecting the radar reflectivity and rainfall measurements, e.g. noise, alignment, non-meteorological echoes, radar calibration, and attenuation. The deployment of additional vertically pointing micro rain radars (MRRs) yields drop size distributions at the radar beam height. These MRR measurements serve as a reference, effectively reduce errors concerning the radar calibration and attenuation correction and monitor the radar data quality. The LAWR radar reflectivities and rainfall rates are in very good agreement with independent MRR measurements. The reanalysed, quality-tested radar reflectivities and rainfall rates were made available as an open-access data set. This multi-year data set enables studies requiring rainfall data at hectometre spatial and sub-minute temporal resolution. In a second study, the added value of a refined spatio-temporal resolution for weather radar observations at sub-hourly temporal and sub-kilometre spatial scales using the reanalysed radar data set is discussed. In fact, the smaller radar volumes of the LAWR result in a closer agreement in terms of radar reflectivity with local radar observations by MRRs compared to C-band radar systems, which are operational at coarser spatial (250 m) and temporal (5 min) resolutions than the LAWR. However, this advantage does not translate in a better match to rainfall accumulations recorded by rain gauges, as differences in the Z-R relation and sample volume sizes between radar and rain gauge dominate the uncertainty for both the LAWR and operational radar systems. Nevertheless, spatial rainfall structures captured by LAWR and rain gauge measurements are similar at sub-hourly timescales. Conventional available rainfall data sets, like the C-band radar measurement and radar-rainfall climatology RADKLIM, fail to capture the sub-hourly rainfall variability. As expected, RADKLIM underestimates rainfall variability due to the kilometre spatial scale. But interestingly, the operational C-band radar observations tend to overestimate spatial variability at sub-hourly temporal scale. This effect is caused by their intermittent scan strategy, taking just a snapshot every five minutes. The LAWR measurements benefit from its scan strategy, resulting to all measurements taken every 2.5s. As a consequence, the LAWR is clearly superior in describing spatial rainfall structure. The refined spatio-temporal resolution and scan strategy is also beneficial for measuring rainfall peaks and measuring steeper gradients. Consequently, the LAWR is capable to capture the microscale rainfall variability better than conventional radars. In summary, this dissertation provides an open-access data set of reanalysed radar reflectivities and rainfall rates at sub-kilometre spatial and minute temporal scales, that can be used for studies on the spatial and temporal scales of precipitation and hydrological research, e.g. input data for high-resolution modelling, in an urban area. The dissertation demonstrates that a LAWR operating at hectometre spatial and 30 s temporal resolutions fills a gap in rainfall observations compared to conventional rainfall measurements.

Host factors and T cell responses in congenital cytomegalovirus infection and T cell diagnostics in SARS-CoV-2

Viral infections remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Of these, congenital infection with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the leading non-genetic cause of long-lasting disabilities in newborns. However, the precise mechanisms underlying increased susceptibility to congenital HCMV infection and disease are unclear. While mouse models are the most used to study virus-host interactions, the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) is not able to cross the materno-fetal barrier and infect the fetus, and the mechanisms of fetal protection are incompletely understood. This thesis aimed to decipher cellular mechanisms at the materno-fetal barrier that prevent the fetus from being infected with MCMV. Primary placental cells and placenta trophoblast cell lines exhibited low susceptibility to infection with MCMV. This was associated with a low expression of the host factor neuropilin-1, and artificial expression of this protein increased cell susceptibility to infection. These results suggest a new mechanism of protection where cells that form the murine materno-fetal barrier exhibit low susceptibility to MCMV infection, resulting in protection of the fetus from vertical infection in utero. T cells are important in clearing CMV infections, but their role in congenital CMV disease is unclear. In a mouse model of congenital disease, neonates exhibited a delayed expansion of MCMV-specific T cells which was associated with a low number of T cells in early life. Adoptive transfer of polyclonal or antigen-specific T cells into neonates were not protective due to a deficient CD8 T cell differentiation into cytotoxic phenotypes. This deficiency was associated with lower concentrations of gamma-chain cytokines critical for priming and maintenance of cytotoxic CD8 T cells. In a clinical cohort of HCMV-exposed newborns, low frequencies of highly cytotoxic CD8 T cell subsets were detected, in line with the increased susceptibility to HCMV disease in early life. In summary, deficient priming of CD8 T cells in congenital CMV infection can contribute to increased disease susceptibility. Virus-specific T cell responses are generated upon viral infections, but their diagnostic potential is under-recognized. With the advent of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, this thesis aimed to establish cell-mediated immunity (CMI) tests that identify previous SARS-CoV-2 infections. A total of 522 individuals were enrolled in the early phases of the pandemic and, using a certified chemiluminescence immunoassay, interferon-gamma release into supernatants was measured after T cell stimulations with spike and nucleocapsid peptide pools. Test performances were calculated applying cutoff values with the highest Youden indices and compared to a commercially available serologic test. CMI tests performed similarly to a commercially available SARS-CoV-2 antibody test and were less affected by confounding effects such as time from positive PCR result, diabetes and dyslipidemia. In conclusion, CMI tests are simple, cost-effective tests that accurately identify adaptive T cell immunity in SARS-CoV-2 convalescent individuals.

Property and liability rules in the light of bargaining under asymmetric information

    No full text
My thesis examines the efficiency and welfare implications of property rules and liability rules as legal mechanisms for protecting entitlements in scenarios of bargaining under asymmetric information. These rules, which are key in many legal areas like torts, contracts, intellectual property or antitrust law, differ in that property rules require consent of the entitlement holder for transfer, while liability rules allow non-consensual transfers subject to compensation. The choice between these two types of rules has been extensively debated in the law and economics literature. The conventional belief suggests that liability rules are superior when transaction costs are high, and property rules when costs are low. Others even argue that liability rules always enhance welfare by enabling efficient takings, regardless of transaction costs. The novelty of my thesis lies in considering asymmetric information, a significant source of transaction costs that alters bargaining behavior and can lead to inefficient or no trade. My thesis analyzes whether this effect of asymmetric information on bargaining and efficiency differs between property and liability rules and identifies the factors influencing the optimal rule choice. My thesis combines theoretical models and empirical analysis, covering both one-sided and two-sided asymmetric information. It comprises three main chapters, each based on a distinct paper. Chapter 2 begins with a game-theoretic approach, modeling the interaction between an entitlement owner and a potential taker as a bargaining game with one-sided asymmetric information, the owner‘s valuation being private information. Chapter 3 extends this analysis to two-sided asymmetric information, the owner‘s and the taker’s valuation being private information. In both scenarios, I apply two bargaining models where either the potential taker or the owner makes a take-it-or-leave-it offer. This allows for an examination of how the distribution of bar-gaining power influences the outcomes. These theoretical models are then paired with a laboratory experiment involving two-sided asymmetric information. Unlike the formal theoretical analysis, which necessitates restrictive assumptions on the bargaining process, the experimental approach implements a more realistic bargaining protocol permitting players to freely and simultaneously make and accept offers. This experiment, focusing on contract remedies, provides insights into how real-world players would renegotiate a contract under two-sided asymmetric information. Such unstructured bargaining approaches may not be as popular, but they have the potential to inform future theories and test broader predictions that stem from theoretical analysis. Our approach follows this line of thought, aiming to test a more general prediction. We argue that, compared to expectation damages (liability rule), specific performance (property rule) increases the surplus from an agreement when the contract performance has become inefficient. This leads us to the hypothesis that specific performance improves the likelihood of reaching an agreement. The experimental design focuses on individual incentives, removing the contractual context. This is not to deny the importance of normative preconceptions and preferences for promise keeping or contract breaching with compensation. However, it’s beneficial to distinguish various factors influencing the optimal remedy choice. An important assumption throughout my thesis is that the court compensates the owner based on his true valuation if his entitlement is taken. This “variable” liability rule leaves the owner indifferent between retaining the entitlement or being compensated. In contrast, “fixed” liability rules, where damages are set in advance or based on market value, do not make the owner indifferent. While fixed rules are argued to favor bargaining, real-world liability rules are typically variable. For example, in the US, liability for torts follows the make-whole principle, extends to consequential damages, and covers even unforeseeable harm rooted in the plaintiff’s conditions (American Law Institute 2010, §§ 2, 4, 6, 7). My thesis models the law based on its actual content, not its “presumable” ideal form or judicial shortcomings. The main findings of my thesis are as follows: First, liability rules allowing for unilateral takings against monetary compensation might give them an efficiency advantage over property rules when transaction costs impede consensual transfer of an entitlement. My thesis shows that transaction costs themselves depend on the mode of entitlement protection. The game theoretic model with one-sided asymmetric information, the owner’s valuation being private information, and costly enforcement of compensation, reveals, that only a property rule achieves the first best when the owner of the entitlement has all the bargaining power. The property rule is more efficient than the liability rule when the informed party makes the take-it-or-leave-it offer, as it induces truthful revelation and trade in all efficient cases. In the opposite case with a take-it-or-leave-it offer from the potential taker as the uninformed party, a property rule is more efficient than a liability rule for most parameter values. In that regard it is important to note that my model of one-sided asymmetric information assumes that liability rule administration involves costs. Damage assessment replaces agreed transfers with court-designed transactions. These costs reflect the time, effort, and expense devoted to determining damages, including evidence collection and settlement bargaining to avoid higher litigation costs. Conflict costs burden the liability rule, but the competition between property and liability entitlement protection involves more than a simple tradeoff between these costs and allocative efficiency. Welfare losses result from both misallocation of the entitlement and conflict costs. While liability rules can overcome bargaining impasse, they hamper the exchange of information and raise the cost of voluntary transactions. The liability rule often loses on both counts. Second, the game theoretic model with two-sided asymmetric information reveals that even with high transaction costs due to two-sided asymmetric information, the liability is not superior. This contradicts the conventional belief that liability rules are ideal in scenarios characterized by high transaction costs. Conventional theory recommends liability rules as they allow for unilateral takings of entitlements when parties fail to trade under a property rule. However, the analysis reveals that asymmetric information complicates the efficiency of the rules in a nuanced manner. It shows that liability rules entail negative side-effects, as it results in inefficient takings and less effective bargaining. The model demonstrates that neither rule achieves the first best outcome, as both rules suffer from inefficiencies due to either non-trade or over-trade. The relative performance of the rules depends on the distribution of player types. The liability rule works better than the property rule when the expected benefit of transferring the entitlement is high and certain. Conversely, the property rule works better than the liability rule when the expected benefit of transferring the entitlement is low and uncertain. This is because the property rule allows parties to reveal their type through their offers, which helps to determine if the transfer is efficient. Third, the bargaining experiment with two-sided asymmetric information confirms the theory that both property and liability rules have their benefits. In particular, the experiment supports the theoretical prediction, that property rules facilitate the bargaining process. The analysis reveals that giving the buyer a right to specific performance, which is the equivalent to a property rule, promotes efficient bargaining: The parties more often agree on non-performance, or continue to execute the contract, when it is optimal to do so. The seller’s ability to breach the contract, which is the equivalent to take unilaterally, can correct bargaining failure. But in the experiment the benefits are small and outweighed by losses from inefficient breach and costly conflict. Conflict costs arise if the parties do not find an agreement as both property and liability rule involve equal administration costs in the experiment. The seller is emboldened to take a tougher bargaining position and thereby prevents agreements for which a subsequent breach is only a poor substitute. At the general level, this finding supports the key advantage of property over liability rules: making an agreement strictly necessary for value creation can reduce the transaction cost of reaching it. The findings of my thesis have wide-ranging implications. They offer valuable perspectives for lawmakers designing remedies in various legal fields, including patent law, contract law, and antitrust law. These insights are also useful for parties negotiating a contract and deciding on appropriate remedies. Beyond conventional legal environments, my results are relevant to other regulatory bodies, such as FIFA, deciding on the penalties to be imposed when a player breaches a contract to move to a different club. This underscores the thesis’s broad relevance and applicability across diverse legal and contractual scenarios. It is important to note that the analysis is subject to some limitations. The thesis is gradually moving towards more realistic assumptions, from one-sided asymmetric information to two-sided asymmetric information and from extreme bargaining situations in the models to a more open bargaining protocol in the experiment. However, lab negotiation is still far from real high-stakes contracting. Future research should include the normative preferences to the game. Furthermore, the experiment could be replicated with different distributions of types, to test whether the distribution influences the efficiency of the rules as predicted by the game theoretic model of two-sided asymmetric information. Another interesting research question stipulated by this thesis will be to analyze whether private information is related to the variation of remedies in real-world contracts.

"Activity Matters was great - I now realize: If I move, I'm fitter.": development and process evaluation of a web-based program for persons with multiple sclerosis

Research shows that persons with mild to moderate multiple sclerosis are less physically active than healthy controls even though they would benefit from it. This study focusses on the feasibility testing and process evaluation of the pilot study of Activity Matters, a twelve-week web-based program, from Ireland, to increase physical activity in this population. The intervention was adapted to local circumstances in Hamburg, Germany, and consists of eleven modules incorporating behavior change techniques. After feasibility had been confirmed, 43 persons with multiple sclerosis participated in a pilot study with a pre-post, single-group intervention design. Qualitative data was collected with questionnaires and semi structured interviews. Physical activity level and stage of change was measured quantitatively. Participants had a mean age of 49.5 years (SD 9.29) and an average Patient Determined Disease Step Score of 2.2 (SD 1.47). Thirty-six participants answered the follow-up questionnaire. On average 9.8 modules were processed within 13 weeks. Each tool for behavior change was perceived as helpful except the chat group. Physical activity levels increased significantly from pre- to post intervention (p-value 0.042, Cohen’s d = 0.35). The results indicate that Activity Matters is feasible and satisfactory and may change activity levels

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) have been used to improve the strength and functionality of various materials, such as lightweight composites and eco-friendly packaging. However, their use in 3D printing is still under research. CNF is derived from wood pulp and have a tendency to aggregate making their use challenging. This research focuses on modifying CNF surfaces to overcome this issue and make them suitable for 3D printing. The study successfully extracted CNF from wood pulp and modified its surface to prevent aggregation. By adding chemical groups to CNF, it becomes more stable and easier to blend with other materials. One method involved grafting a hydrophobic (water-repellent) substance onto CNF, making it compatible with non-polar plastics like high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This modified CNF (CNF-g-SA) improved the plastic's stiffness and reduced warping during 3D printing, leading to better shape accuracy. Another part of the research explored creating a self-healing gel using modified CNF. This gel, made by combining CNF with a special copolymer, showed improved mechanical properties and the ability to heal itself when heated, making it useful for 3D printing complex objects with high resolution. Lastly, the study developed a 3D printable gel using a peptide (Fmoc-FF) combined with CNF. The resulting composites had improved mechanical properties and printability, allowing the creation of detailed 3D objects that retained their shape well after drying. Overall, the research demonstrated that modifying CNF surfaces enhances their compatibility with various materials, making them suitable for advanced 3D printing applications and leading to stronger, more flexible, and eco-friendly printed objects
