An important challenge of higher educational institutions is the inclusion of non-traditional learners. The following paper presents a project, which researched the challenges and special needs of student top athletes. First the paper will present the results of a qualitative study about the challenges and conditions of their study programs and commitments of student top athletes at the University of Applied Science Mittweida. Based on this results a blended learning scenario in combination with the flipped classroom has been introduced and tested

Against the Dehumanisation of Decision-Making – Algorithmic Decisions at the Crossroads of Intellectual Property, Data Protection, and Freedom of Information

    No full text
This work presents ten arguments against algorithmic decision-making. These re-volve around the concepts of ubiquitous discretionary interpretation, holistic intu-ition, algorithmic bias, the three black boxes, psychology of conformity, power of sanctions, civilising force of hypocrisy, pluralism, empathy, and technocracy. Nowadays algorithms can decide if one can get a loan, is allowed to cross a bor-der, or must go to prison. Artificial intelligence techniques (natural language pro-cessing and machine learning in the first place) enable private and public deci-sion-makers to analyse big data in order to build profiles, which are used to make decisions in an automated way. The lack of transparency of the algorithmic deci-sion-making process does not stem merely from the characteristics of the relevant techniques used, which can make it impossible to access the rationale of the deci-sion. It depends also on the abuse of and overlap between intellectual property rights (the “legal black box”). In the US, nearly half a million patented inventions concern algorithms; more than 67% of the algorithm-related patents were issued over the last ten years and the trend is increasing. To counter the increased mo-nopolisation of algorithms by means of intellectual property rights (with trade se-crets leading the way), this paper presents three legal routes that enable citizens to ‘open’ the algorithms. First, copyright and patent exceptions, as well as trade se-crets are discussed. Second, the EU General Data Protection Regulation is critical-ly assessed. In principle, data controllers are not allowed to use algorithms to take decisions that have legal effects on the data subject’s life or similarly significantly affect them. However, when they are allowed to do so, the data subject still has the right to obtain human intervention, to express their point of view, as well as to contest the decision. Additionally, the data controller shall provide meaningful in-formation about the logic involved in the algorithmic decision. Third, this paper critically analyses the first known case of a court using the access right under the freedom of information regime to grant an injunction to release the source code of the computer program that implements an algorithm. Only an integrated ap-proach – which takes into account intellectual property, data protection, and free-dom of information – may provide the citizen affected by an algorithmic decision of an effective remedy as required by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and the European Convention on Human Rights

Participants in university courses have different types of education and knowledge. In this case the didactic principle of differentiation is very important. We present the Analyzed Classroom teaching concept using an IT-system for analyze the learning progress. Students use tablets working on their exercises. The system creates a documented assessment of competence level for each student. The teacher can use the results for planning next steps into current exercise. We evaluated this concept in summer semester 2016 at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

This article gives a first overview over student-teacher-relationships on the social networking sites (SNS) Facebook and WhatsApp. Twelve problem-centered interviews with students were held and interpreted using a qualitative content analysis. Results show, that students interact with their teachers in different formats and speak about topics ranging from school matters to private life. Students’ ideas about their teachers’ roles include authority figures and persons of trust, experts and leaders

This contribute describes a new approach for rapid physical prototyping of machine components in material flow systems. First, current stipulations and evaluation methods for machine design such as laws, technical norms and industry standards are examined with regards to their implications for the human factor. This status quo is contrasted with the requirements that result from the central ideas of the Social Networked Industry and research gaps are derived. The requirements take functional and ergonomic aspects into account. A procedure to use Motion Capturing as a reference tool is demonstrated. It enables a quantitative analysis of the interdependency of machine design and the human perspective

Order picking systems with serial kinematic axis setup are limited in performance. There is a loss in efficiency with increasing payload ratio. Especially high-frequency storage systems with extremely fast picking operations require new solutions. Hence, a new concept of a cable-robot with fiber-ropes has been developing since 2016. High efficiency in terms of payload-ratio is achieved as well as high dynamics in positioning. Furthermore low acoustical emission is a characteristic of such systems. As a matter of principle the system is an overhead conveyor
