Affective spaces. Experiencing atmosphere in the visual arts.

    No full text
Atmospheric perception is a vital aspect of how viewers engage with works of visual art. Yet art historical discourse has barely paid attention to atmosphere as a critical concept. To remedy this deficit this essay explores how works of visual art afford atmospheric experiences. Drawing on philosophical work on atmosphere and mood by Heidegger, Schmitz, Böhme and Griffero, it will be argued that atmospheres are at the core of our affective involvement with art. How an artwork solicits this affective involvement depends, among other things, on the media it employs. This will be demonstrated by discussing two examples: a painting and a work of installation art. Both works seem to articulate the same atmospheric character but the perceptual conditions they offer for experiencing this atmosphere are different. As a result, the works emphasize different stages in the process of atmospheric perception. Juxtaposing them helps to better understand – and enjoy – this process

When investing in a small parts warehouse, choosing the right automation technology is a major challenge, as the selected system is a long-term investment. Both, shuttle and AS/RS systems have proven themselves successfully in practice in this context and are characterised by a number of individual advantages and disadvantages. This article presents a quantitative decision model for the selection of the automation technology best suited for the application-specific case. In the model, suitable alternatives for both system variants are generated based on defined input parameters and system requirements and evaluated with regard to essential criteria (e.g. handling performance). Based on a multi-criteria evaluation model, the warehouse alternative to be selected is output as a recommendation to be implemented

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been increasingly used in object detection in recent years due to their high detection accuracy and high detection speed. Despite fast and reliable classifications, one of the biggest disadvantages is that the training of such a network is very time consuming. The reason for this is that, depending on the complexity of the object to be detected, several hundred already classified learning images are required. Until now, the creation of these learning images was mainly done manually. For this reason, an assistance system was developed at the Institute for Material Handling and Logistics (IFL), which accelerates the learning of new objects considerably compared to the traditional manual method

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a broadly accepted and well established tool for simulating bulk materials. However, cohesion and adhesion is one field of DEM where a lot of questions still remain unanswered. One of the methods employed to answer this question is calibration and validation, by performing a detailed study of the DEM parameter fields and comparing them with experimental results, in order to zero in on a unique set of parameters which satisfy the experimental results. A lot of contact models exist which explain cohesion in their own unique ways, however, JKR model is widely used for cohesive simulations due to its robustness and a relatively wide area of application. The JKR model tackles cohesion by introducing Surface Energy Density and increased particle overlap. Cohesive DEM simulations were performed using a combination set of Friction coefficients, Young’s Modulus and Surface Energy Density. These were then compared with the reference experiments to narrow down on a specific set of parameters. Hence a systematic analytically driven calibration protocol will be established which can be used to calibrate different other cohesive materials. Further investigations will be carried out to assess the effect of cohesion and adhesion on rolling resistance. Various parameter calibration and validation endeavours in recent years have been quite successful in answering those questions on a macroscopic level. In this work a Draw Down setup, rightly classified as Uniaxial Rapid Flow Low Consolidation test, was chosen to study the cohesive behavior of under study materials. One of the drawbacks of calibration is that a very large number of simulations should be performed to have an acceptable result. For this purpose High Performance Cluster (HPC) computing is a valuable asset. In this exercise the simulations were done using highly parallel computing ability of ‘‘OvGU HPC Neumann’’. Parallel computing greatly reduces the time required for the whole exercise, which otherwise would have been deemed too computationally intensive to undertake.

3D reconstruction with a markerless tracking method of flexible and modular molecular physical models: towards tangible interfaces

    No full text
Physical models have always been used in the field of molecular science as an understandable representation of complex molecules, particularly in chemistry. Even if physical models were recently completed by numerical in silico molecular visualizations which offer a wide range of molecular representations and rendering features, they are still involved in research work and teaching, because they are more suitable than virtual objects for manipulating and building molecular structures. In this paper, we present a markerless tracking method to construct a molecular virtual representation from a flexible and modular physical model. Our approach is based on a single RGB camera to reconstruct the physical model in interactive time in order to use it as a tangible interface, and thus benefits from both physical and virtual representations. This method was designed to require only a light virtual and augmented reality hardware setup, such as a smartphone or HMD & mounted camera, providing a markerless molecular tangible interface suitable for a classroom context or a classical biochemistry researcher desktop. The approach proposes a fast image processing algorithm based on color blob detection to extract 2D atom positions of a user-defined conformation in each frame of a video. A tracking algorithm recovers a set of 2D projected atom positions as an input of the 3D reconstruction stage, based on a Structure From Motion method. We tuned this method to robustly process a few key feature points and combine them within a global point cloud. Biological knowledge drives the final reconstruction, filling missing atoms to obtain the desired molecular conformation

Big Data in the Insurance Industry: Leeway and Limits for Individualising Insurance Contracts

    No full text
With the advent of big data analytics, the individualisation of mass market insurance policies has become commercially attractive. While this development would have positive economic effects, it could also undermine the principle of solidarity in insurance. This paper aims to outline the different regulatory approaches currently in place for dealing with this fundamental challenge by analysing the insurance, anti-discrimination and data protection laws of Switzerland and the U.S./California pertaining to health, renters and automobile insurance. It will be shown that the leeway for individualising insurance contracts is vanishingly small for (mandatory) health insurance on both sides of the Atlantic. By contrast, the two legal systems pursue different regulatory approaches with regard to the other two types of insurance. Renters and automobile insurance are predominantly governed by the freedom of contract principle in Switzerland, whereas in California sector specific regulations significantly limit the informational basis of insurance companies, thereby limiting the leeway for individualisation to a large extent. While Swiss anti-discrimination law hardly restricts the individualisation of insurance contracts, U.S. and California law prohibit such individualisation based on protected characteristics, in this way further restricting the remaining leeway. While privacy laws in the U.S. and California set some significant but rather specific limits for the individualisation of insurance contracts based on the use of personal data, the all-encompassing Swiss (and European) data protection law is clearly the most important barrier to individualisation in Switzerland. Namely, it remains unclear whether the processing of personal data for the purpose of individualising insurance contracts may be based on the legitimate interests of the insurer. As a consequence, insurance companies are advised to always obtain their customers’ consent for making individual offers based on big data analytics. The authors conclude that instead of indirectly hindering the individualisation of insurance contracts through data protection law, Swiss (and European) lawmakers should initiate a dialogue involving all stakeholders to determine which sectors of insurance should be dominated by the principle of solidarity and in which sectors and on what informational basis the individualisation of insurance contracts should be allowed

Recht der öffentlichen Werkwiedergabe im harmonisierten Urheberrecht

This article analyses the criteria which the European Court applies to interpret the right of communication to the public. It shows that the criteria that determine the concepts “public” and “act of communication” are not adequate to outline this right. The concept “public” remains vague because the applied criteria do not make clear under which conditions an act of communication is directed to a private or public group. The concept “act of communication” is unspecific because it fails to distinguish the right of communication to the public from the distribution right. The jurisdiction of the European Court neglects to acknowledge that the granted exclusive rights of authors are not only rights to prohibit the use of their works, but primarily to authorize them. Authors should be able to control the exploitation of their works and negotiate a fair remuneration. It is to be hoped that the recently adopted Directive 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market, which harmonizes the European copyright contract law, will help to eliminate these deficits.

Conception of a modular load carrier for the transportation of Euro containers for the aircraft production

    No full text
Euro containers are established in almost every industry for the transport and storage of small-parts. However, a fully automated transport between storage location and point-of-use is not always possible and instead realized by manual transport with rollable load carriers. State of the art load carrier concepts for con-tainers are not scalable and need to be repacked and densified very often. In order to encounter this problem, this article deals with connectable load carrier modules which can be combined to individual load carrier units. This improves the volume efficiency and flexibility and enables leaner logistics processes

For realizing of long conveyor lines, a sequence of several individual conveyors is necessary. This segmentation creates critical transfer points for goods transport, the conveyor trenches. With direct drives based on magnetic toothed belts and hinged carriers attached to the mat chain, the number of conveyor trenches and the height of the conveyor can be minimized. Because of this, a modular belt conveyor with a height of 100mm with a width of 1m can reach a length of well over 10m. By using textile sliding support, the friction between the mat chain and the sliding plane can be reduced. This increases process reliability and occupational safety and makes the system energy-efficient

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in particular machine learning algorithms to solve problems in practice and research is widespread and established in several areas. However, there is still a research gap in the formation of storage strategies in high-bay warehouses with autonomous vehicles (AVS/RS). One of the AI methods that has recently attracted attention is Reinforcement Learning (RL), which includes deep learning. This paper presents how deep reinforcement learning can be used to develop a sequencing policy for AVS/RS
