Living City, A Collaborative Browser-Based Massively Multiplayer Online Game
This work presents the design and implementation of our Browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Game, Living City, a simulation game fully developed at the University of Messina. Living City is a persistent and real-time digital world, running in the Web browser environment and accessible from users without any client-side installation. Today Massively Multiplayer Online Games attract the attention of Computer Scientists both for their architectural peculiarity and the close interconnection with the social network phenomenon. We will cover these two aspects paying particular attention to some aspects of the project: game balancing (e.g. algorithms behind time and money balancing); business logic (e.g., handling concurrency, cheating avoidance and availability) and, finally, social and psychological aspects involved in the collaboration of players, analyzing their activities and interconnections
Łukasiewicz-Moisil Many-Valued Logic Algebra of Highly-Complex Systems
A novel approach to self-organizing, highly-complex systems (HCS), such as living organisms and artificial intelligent systems (AIs), is presented which is relevant to Cognition, Medical Bioinformatics and Computational Neuroscience. Quantum Automata (QAs) were defined in our previous work as generalized, probabilistic automata with quantum state spaces (Baianu, 1971). Their next-state functions operate through transitions between quantum states defined by the quantum equations of motion in the Schroedinger representation, with both initial and boundary conditions in space-time. Such quantum automata operate with a quantum logic, or Q-logic, significantly different from either Boolean or Łukasiewicz many-valued logic. A new theorem is proposed which states that the category of quantum automata and automata--homomorphisms has both limits and colimits. Therefore, both categories of quantum automata and classical automata (sequential machines) are bicomplete. A second new theorem establishes that the standard automata category is a subcategory of the quantum automata category. The quantum automata category has a faithful representation in the category of Generalized (M,R)--Systems which are open, dynamic biosystem networks with defined biological relations that represent physiological functions of primordial organisms, single cells and higher organisms
Exploring the N-th Dimension of Language
This paper is aimed at exploring the hidden fundamental\ud
computational property of natural language that has been so elusive that it has made all attempts to characterize its real computational property ultimately fail. Earlier natural language was thought to be context-free. However, it was gradually realized that this does not hold much water given that a range of natural language phenomena have been found as being of non-context-free character that they have almost scuttled plans to brand natural language contextfree. So it has been suggested that natural language is mildly context-sensitive and to some extent context-free. In all, it seems that the issue over the exact computational property has not yet been solved. A Model for the Rehabilitation of Witness Perspective-The Path of Knowledge:The Knowledge of Path
The sound producing machinery of change is a viral element in the problems of\ud
civilization. A silent relation that is unmoved, as it is unexposed to the power of the\ud
discourse of change and a silent logic of volumetric processes, together illustrated to\ud
companion empirical nature are employed for the elaboration of historical conceptual\ud
paradox involving mind and matter. Mind, conceived as an enduring state of the\ud
becoming of energy into a state of matter, and matter as the constantly becoming\ud
environment, are tested with criteria of witnessibility for consistency to capture an\ud
acceptably reasoned description, from a modern perspective, of cultural evolution. A\ud
self-generating friction at the conceptual border of the social and natural sciences, as the\ud
recurring source of the problems of civilization, is discussed. The philosophies of logical\ud
positivism and post modernism referenced from the elaborated philosophy are determined\ud
to reflect a need for a representation of nature that is independent of temporal and\ud
physical parameters of perspective. Emergence is discussed within the framework of first\ud
witness perspective and a visually based mathematical-physical model of space is\ud
elaborated.\u
Imperative Content and the Painfulness of Pain
Abstract Representationalist theories of phenomenal consciousness have problems in accounting for pain, for at least two reasons. First of all, the negative affective phenomenology of pain (its painfulness) does not seem to be representational at all. Secondly, pain experiences are not transparent to introspection in the way perceptions are. This is reflected, e. g., in the fact that we do not acknowledge pain hallucinations. In this paper I defend that representationalism has the potential to overcome these objections. Defenders of representationalism have tried to analyse every kind of phenomenal character in terms of indicative contents. But there is another possibility: affective phenomenology, in fact, depends on imperative representational content. This provides a satisfactory solution to the aforementioned difficulties
Inherited hemolytic disorders with high occurrence of b-thalassemia in Sindhi community of Jabalpur town in Madhya Pradesh, India
Hereditary hemolytic disorders such as hemoglobin disorders, β-thalassemia syndrome, G6PD deficiency, and ABO and Rhesus blood groups are the most common public health problems in India. Community genetic screening provides multifaceted information for finding prevalence, level of health education, preventive strategies such as genetic/marriage counseling to relieve the burden of vulnerable communities. However, such genetic screening studies are scanty in India. This study aims to find the prevalence of inherited hemolytic disorders in Sindhi community, identify the persons for genetic/marriage counseling and to suggest the relevant strategies for prevention and control to the affected families. A cross-sectional random study of 508 persons of Sindhi community belonging to all ages and both sexes was conducted for screening of hemoglobin disorders, G6PD deficiency and ABO and Rhesus (D) blood groups following the standard procedures and techniques from Jabalpur town in Central India. High frequency of β-thalassemia trait (20.5%), Hb D trait (2.2%) and hemoglobin D/β-thalassemia (0.2%), G6PD deficiency (0.8%), and a low prevalence of Rhesus negative (3.0%) blood group was observed in Sindhi community of Jabalpur town in Madhya Pradesh. A case of β-thalassemia major and Hb D-thalassemia were also encountered. Double heterozygosity of Hb D/β-thalassemia showed hypochromic and microcytic red cell morphology with mild anemia. Inherited hemolytic disorders are an important public health challenge in Sindhi community. Preventive genetics program needs to be vigorously taken up to ameliorate the sufferings of at risk communities in India
A comparative study of frequency of postnatal depression among subjects with normal and caesarean deliveries
Background: Prevalence of postnatal depression (PND) is 12-15%. Recent studies are equivocal about the earlier inference that PND is higher among caesarian than normal delivery. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of PND among the Indian women and the association between the mode of delivery and PND. Material and method: Fifty subjects each; having delivered normally and by caesarian section was chosen. All the women were within 3 months post delivery and could understand Kannada language. Those who consented were asked to complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Those found to have scores suggestive of depression on EPDS were assessed for depression according to ICD-10. The data was analyzed using paired t test and chi square test. Result and conclusion: Among Post caesarean subjects, depression was diagnosed in 20% (n=10) as compared to 16% (n=8) in subjects that delivered normally. However there was no significant difference in the frequency of depression among the two groups. Due to the small sample size the results cannot be generalized

become increasingly more evident that this type of data should provide an adequate basis for modeling social systems. In particular, it has been shown that there is a spectrum of cognitive styles with respect to the differential handling of novel or corroborating information.\ud
Furthermore this spectrum is correlated to political affiliation. Here we use methods of statistical mechanics to characterize the collective behavior of an agent-based model society whose interindividual interactions due to information exchange in the form of opinions, are in qualitative agreement with neurocognitive and psychological data. The main conclusion derived from the model is\ud
that the existence of diversity in the cognitive strategies yields different statistics for the sets of moral foundations and that these arise from the cognitive interactions of the agents. Thus a simple interacting agent model, whose interactions are in accord with empirical data about moral dynamics, presents statistical signatures\ud
consistent with those that characterize opinions of conservatives and liberals. The higher the difference in the treatment of novel and corroborating information the more agents correlate to liberals.\u
Sporadic Medullary Microcarcinoma in a Young Patient - A Rare Case
Sporadic medullary microcarcinoma of thyroid is a rare disease detected usually in 0.15% of all thyroid malignancy. We report a case of sporadic medullary microcarcinoma (MMC) of thyroid in a 24 year old male presenting as solitary thyroid nodule. There was no family history of medullary carcinoma of thyroid. Although medullary carcinoma in a familial setting have been reported, sporadic MMC is rare especially in a young patient
