From Ostpolitik to Putinpolitik: the AfD’s Affinity for Russia
This project aims to identify why pro-Putin or pro-Russia sentiments are more common among Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD) members from the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). The project contributes to the ongoing discussion on populism, economic nationalism, and right-wing extremism by using the AfD in Eastern Germany as a case study. Using historical materialism as a theoretical lens, the paper investigates how the historical and material conditions in Eastern Germany contributed to pro-Putin sentiments among Eastern AfD members. The study analyzed social media posts and public statements from AfD members in the German parliament (Bundestag) to classify all 80 AfD MPs in the Bundestag on a scale from pro-Putin to anti-Putin. The study then utilized thematic coding, regression analysis, and content analysis to investigate the relationship between the pro-Putin MPs and economic, historic, or social conditions that may contribute to the AfD’s support for Russia. This project argues that Eastern German MPs are more likely to advocate for pro- Russia policies due to historic and economic conditions in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and post-reunification. By examining AfD MPs’ statements in favor of Russia or Putin, this project demonstrates how the historical, social, and economic conditions during and after German reunification have affected German politics today. Ultimately, the research contributes to a better understanding of the political divide between Western and Eastern Europe, demonstrating how the legacy of the Cold War still influences contemporary European politics
Malinche, Malinches, de Juliana Faesler: história/histórias da mulher/mulheres no cenário mexicano do século XXI
La Malinche is one of the most controversial characters in Mexican history and, therefore, one of those who has provoked the most interesting reflections from the scholarly field and from the literary and theatrical creation. Malinche, Malinches, by Juliana Faesler, is a dramatic piece premiered in 2010 that is part of a previous tradition of interpreting the character from a gender perspective. The play offers a peculiar approach to the historical figure and also an inquiry into the condition of women in contemporary Mexico. The historical Malinche (only accessible through the writing of others) is reconstructed throughout the play in a complex way, while many other women\u27s voices of the most varied conditions inhabit the scene in a dialogue that allows to question the hegemonic patriarchal discourse.La Malinche es uno de los personajes más controvertidos de la historia mexicana y, por ello, también uno de los que ha provocado reflexiones de mayor interés desde el ámbito académico y desde la creación literaria y teatral. Estrenada en 2010, Malinche, Malinches, de Juliana Faesler, es una pieza dramática que se inscribe en toda una tradición previa de interpretación del personaje desde una perspectiva de género y que, en este sentido, ofrece a un tiempo un peculiar acercamiento a la figura histórica y una indagación en torno a la condición de la mujer en el México actual. Measurement of the impact-parameter dependent azimuthal anisotropy in coherent ρ0 photoproduction with ALICE
Coherent vector meson photoproduction in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions is a well established tool to probe the gluon structure of the colliding nuclei. We will focus on the observation of quantum interference effects in the ρ 0 meson photoproduction, in the form of angular anisotropy. Such an anisotropy appears due to two different factors: first, the photons involved in the process are linearly polarized along the impact parameter, and, second, quantum interference occurs between the two amplitudes that contribute to the ρ0 photoproduction cross section. Furthermore, the interference effect strongly depends on the impact parameter of the collision, which acts as the distance between the openings of a two-slit interferometer. We present the first measurement of this anisotropy in coherent ρ0 photoproduction from ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √sNN = 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, as a function of the impact parameter of the collision. The latter is estimated by classifying the events in nuclear-breakup classes defined by neutron emission. The ρ0 mesons are detected by the ALICE experiment through their decay into a pion pair. The anisotropy occurs as a function of ϕ, defined as the azimuth angle between the two vectors formed by the sum, and the difference, of the transverse-momentum of the pions, respectively. It results in a cos(2ϕ) modulation of the photoproduced ρ0; the amplitude of the modulation is found to increase by about one order of magnitude from large to small impact parameters. This trend is compatible with the available theoretical prediction
Quantum mechanical aspects of coherent photoproduction: the limits of coherence, and multiple vector mesons
Quantum mechanics is central to coherent photoproduction in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs). This writeup will discuss some surprising aspects of UPCs that stem from these quantum mechanical roots. The Good-Walker (GW) paradigm, which connects coherent photoproduction with the target nucleus remaining in its ground state. This contrasts with a semi-classical picture, where coherence depends on the positions of the individual nucleons and the momentum transfer. Unlike the GW approach, the semiclassical picture is consistent with the observed data on coherent photoproduction with nuclear breakup, and with coherent photoproduction in peripheral collisions. The semiclassical approach allows for a wider variety of coherent UPC reactions, such as coherent photoproduction of charged mesons, including some non-quark-antiquark exotica. Quantum mechanics is also key to the coherent photoproduction of multiple vector mesons by the interactions of a single ion pair. The vector mesons share a common impact parameter, and so can exhibit richer interference patterns than single mesons. At forward rapidities, the cross sections to produce multiple identical vector mesons are enhanced due to superradiance. With enough statistics, multi-meson events may provide an opportunity to observe stimulated decays
Extracellular matrix in prostate cancer anti-androgen resistance
Extracellular matrix (ECM) within the tumour microenvironment (TME) of prostate cancer has been extensively reported to be associated with the development of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) resistance in prostate cancer. Recent-year investigations have illustrated that the deposition of ECM proteins contribute to this resistance by regulating cell behaviours of cancer cells directly or indirectly through modulating immune cells within the TME, thereby protecting cancer cells from the tumour-suppressing effects of ADT. Here we review these findings, offering new perspectives on prostate cancer research and highlighting the potential of ECM proteins as novel clinical targets for predicting and treating ADT-resistance
