    The Effects of Postseason College Football Bowl Games on Recruiting: A Discontinuity-Based Approach

    Many colleges with NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs lose money by participating in postseason bowl games.  Despite these losses, most colleges are eager to accept invites to play in bowl games on the premise that playing in these games brings increased attention and notoriety to their institution. In particular, football coaches often state that playing in a bowl game positively impacts their ability to recruit future student-athletes. This study used regression discontinuity design to estimate whether bowl game participation affects recruiting class quality. Contrary to previous research, I found no statistically significant relationship between bowl game participation and reciting class quality.

    Deriving best use data from NEON for mosquito research applications: A practical guide with code

    The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a long-term monitoring program at the continental scale designed to understand and forecast ecological responses to environmental change at local to broad scales. However, despite robust and nearly continuous collections, NEON mosquito data have been underused in downstream analyses. Here, we provide species-level estimated abundances for nighttime collected female mosquitoes derived from the mosquitoes sampled from CO2 traps (DP1.10043.001) (RELEASE-2024; NEON, 2024). By including zero counts, our derived data complement existing data sets and provide an analysis-ready time series useful for investigating mosquito phenology, abundances, and diversity at the species or community level. We also outline a set of considerations specific to filtering NEON mosquito data by sex and for day or nighttime collections, highlighting factors that could introduce uncertainty to abundance estimates. Along with the data set, we provide an R Markdown file that includes annotated code and documents our data filtering and QC/QA steps, as well as data files used to filter the mosquito data based on QC/QA criteria. All files are freely available for download through the Environmental Data Initiative data portal. Our reproducible and fully documented workflow can be easily adapted for specific needs or other NEON surveillance data.     Incarceration, Harm, and Accountability in Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage

    Tayari Jones’s 2018 novel An American Marriage depicts the corrosive impact of incarceration on the marriage between Black newlyweds Roy and Celestial after Roy is imprisoned for a rape he did not commit. The novel illustrates the injustices of the American criminal punishment system, not least of which is the harm caused to the families of incarcerated people, as a manifestation of structural racism. Moreover, it both engages with and subverts tropes common to fictional depictions of incarceration that perpetuate reformist imaginings of a safer, kinder prison and suggests instead the efficacy of transformative justice approaches to harm. In doing so, it reveals the increased influence of abolitionist thinking within mainstream discourse on race and incarceration in the United States. It also shows the potential for literary depictions of mass incarceration to move beyond and even challenge the acceptance and normalization of prisons within American society. Contextualizing the novel within this debate and the practices of transformative justice, moreover, helps us to retain focus on the characters are individuals who are accountable for their own choices even as they operate within systems that constrain those choices, as transformative justice also asks us to do

    Creating Fair Game, an Online Computer Game on Fair Use

    Fair Game is an online computer game that teaches undergraduate students about ethically using copyrighted materials in course assignments. The game, created in a collaboration between Augusta University Libraries and the Center for Instructional Innovation, focuses on the doctrine of fair use and its four factors. This article presents a case study on the game’s design and development following a recommended practice from the literature: mapping an information literacy model to gameplay using the game design theory of aligning game mechanics to learning mechanics. The authors discuss their experience with mapping portions of the Association of College and Research Libraries framework (2015) and using the Learning Mechanics–Game Mechanics Model (Arnab et al., 2015) for designing Fair Game. The authors recommend future game makers also consider aligning motivational learning theories to game design
