A scoping review of factors within the higher education ecosystem influencing student-athlete mental health and wellbeing in North America: Insights and a model for mental health promotion
The purpose of this research was to synthesize peer-reviewed literature identifying factors in the organizational ecosystem that impact post-secondary student-athlete mental health in North America. We adopted a holistic definition of mental health considering outcomes related to both mental illness and multidimensional wellbeing (i.e., psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing). A structured scoping review method was used to search seven databases. Data from included studies (N = 57), were summarized according to the socioecological model of health and analyzed using thematic synthesis.
Post-secondary sport environments that promoted mental health and wellbeing supported student-athlete psychological need satisfaction and were characterized by: (1) growth-oriented motivational climates, (2) harmony between academic and athletic roles, (3) equity and inclusion, (4) social support, (5) positive relationships, (6) ethical leadership, and (7) health-promoting organizational operations. We propose a theoretically and empirically informed conceptual model illustrating features of post-secondary sport that interact to promote student-athlete mental health and wellbeing. These findings illustrate the need for multidimensional approaches to mental health promotion and further organizational research, particularly in Canada. This review highlights the mental health impacts of environmental demands and resources that can support effective institutional interventions to safeguard student-athlete mental health despite inherent stressors of competitive sport.
The role of athletic identity and sport motivation in collegiate eSport burnout
College eSports have experienced rapid growth, yet research on psychological aspects of eSports is lacking, which has resulted in calls for greater understanding in this area. In traditional sports, athletic identity (Gustafsson et al., 2007) and sport motivations (Li et al., 2013) have been linked to athlete burnout, and as collegiate eSports become more structured and eSport athletes’ training becomes more intensive, their athletic identities and motivations may influence their burnout potential. While eSport athletes’ identity and sport motivations have been studied separately, no research has examined their relationship with college eSport athlete burnout. Therefore, the purpose was to determine the extent to which participation frequency, athletic identity (AI), and eSport motivations predicted college eSport athletes’ burnout. Collegiate eSport athletes (N = 98; M age = 20.55, SD = 2.33) were assessed on their self-reported eSport frequency, athletic identity, sport motivations, and burnout. A series of separate multiple regression analyses on burnout dimensions and global burnout showed that amotivation and external regulation were positive predictors of global burnout, and amotivation was also a positive predictor of reduced sense of accomplishment. In addition, amotivation, AI-self-presentation, and external regulation were positive predictors of eSport athletes’ exhaustion. Finally, amotivation and AI self-identity were positive and negative predictors (respectively) of eSport devaluation. Results suggest that amotivation is a predictor of burnout in college Sports and that certain aspects of athletic identity may buffer against burnout in eSport athletes

Rediscovering the Child: Review of Montessori Educator Research Projects 2024–2025
This article is part of our annual series “Rediscovering the Child” which began as an effort to disseminate high quality practitioner and classroom-based action research (CBAR) that does not typically have a widely accessible forum. CBAR is powerful because it is conducted in real classrooms with real children by practitioners with real-world problems they wish to address. We highlight several studies each year that we hope will inspire other practitioners to formalize their classroom inquiry to share with the wider community. We also hope that practitioners in the field can reflect on their own practice by learning about how other educators are addressing the challenges they face. First, we include with studies that focus on the whole child by exploring the impact of outdoor play and engagement with nature through papers by two authors: Speakmanova and Lederer. We also consider work by Dinkler that looks at the role of music in holistic development and prosocial behavior. Next, we examine papers addressing the academic subjects of reading and math. The first of the academic focused papers is by Allred and Johnson who explore reading development for early childhood students who did not have 3-year-old Montessori experiences while in the second Thompson investigates the use of goal-setting strategies on math fluency for elementary students. We conclude this year’s review with a practitioner inquiry paper by Sadrnafisi who develops a supportive teacher community to address the causes of teacher turnover
The Phytosociological study of fire impacted tropical grasslands in northeast India: Phytosociological study of fire impacted tropical grasslands
Tropical grasslands in South Assam, northeast India originated as a result of secondary succession on the abandoned lands after cultivation or deforestation. The grasslands are dominated by Imperata cylindrica and maintained under fire management as a customary practice. The rice farming communities exploit these grasslands for obtaining thatch leaves. This paper therefore, explores the culturally old grassland in Dorgakona, South Assam, northeast India and the impact of fire regime on its herbaceous flora and grasses. It presents 1) vegetation study to generate quantitative information on analytical characters of grasses and associated species and 2) an analysis of life-forms, biological spectrum and phenology of the grassland herbaceous flora followed by citing the significance of the current vegetation studies. Imperata cylindrica was dominant based on IVI (132. 27 and 141.68) for the burnt and unburnt plots respectively. Borreria pusilla (co-dominant) with IVI of (63.10 and 29.75) was fire dependent species as revealed by the data sequentially placed for burnt and unburnt plots respectively. Fire induced grasses (Chrysopogon aciculatus and Sacciolepis indica), tuber (Colocasia esculenta) were restricted to burnt plot. Multifold proliferation in the therophytes and cryptophytes occurred over Raunkiaer’s spectrum assigned with thero-cryptophytic climate. Plant phenological study revealed sequential changes in the phenoogical events. The tropical grasslands are predominated with fire resistant I. cylindrica and are adapted to the indigenous management procedures. It is recommended that the outcome of this study will generate valuable database for future researches on the degraded lands
