No full textInternational audienceThrough the study of ornamental and symbolic traditions, post-doctoral work with the Fyssen Foundation has opened new research perspectives on the Natufian culture (15,000- 11,650 cal. BP), atthecrossroadsoftheprocessesofSedentarisationandNeolithisationintheSouthwestAsia(froma mobile to a sedentary lifestyle and from a predatory economy to production). This original insight suggests that these primo-sedentary societies were the crucible for a twofold revolution linked to the creation of individual and collective identities: the revolution in ornamental practices and symbolic production. Two simultaneous, broad-spectrum and interdependent processes. The ‘Wolqayt question’ from c. 2015 to the Tigray war: agrarian claims in Amhara nationalism
No full textInternational audienceThe emergence of Amhara nationalism as a central political trend in Ethiopia can be dated to 2016. It soon gained considerable audience within the Amhara region and beyond. This article analyses a spearheading claim of Amhara nationalists: the annexation of ‘Wolqayt’ – constitutionally known as Western Tigray – to the Amhara region. The article shows that beyond identity discourses, material claims related to agrarian questions were central in how a committee made of agricultural investors, rich peasants, and civil servants first articulated their grievances. After many activists spent months in jail, the Amhara cause was militarized in the lead-up to the Tigray war, within and without state structures. Drawing on a firsthand ethnographic account of the increasingly polarized political crisis and the Tigray war, the article shows how wartime government practices and violence paved the way for the politicization of other identity categories in Western Tigray and Wolqayt, once again anchored in claims over resources – notably land – and state services. A qualitative methodology unveils strong material dimensions of current contentious politics in Ethiopia

No full textInternational audienceÀ partir de deux enquêtes menées en contexte carcéral, cet article analyse les effets du genre des chercheuses sur la relation d’enquête et le recueil du matériau. Il montre comment, en tant que femmes, les autrices ont bénéficié d’un accès privilégié à l’intimité des enquêté·e·s, tout en étant assignées à des rôles genrés : figure maternelle ou sexuelle, aidante, confidente. Le croisement de leurs expériences souligne l’intérêt d’une réflexion conjointe pour objectiver les mécanismes à l’œuvre sur le terrain. Ici se révèle la centralité du genre comme facteur structurant, souvent plus déterminant que d’autres variables sociodémographiques

Trajectories of Engagement: Challenging the Materiality of Participatory Research
No full textInternational audienceParticipatory research is no longer an option; it’s an injunction. While the social consequences of this approach are often described through their effects on so-called participants, what happens to the scholars themselves, those who are moved, reshaped, or even implicated in these processes? And how do they navigate the constraints of a research model that has become both fashionable and mandatory? This book brings together more than twenty research projects from across diverse disciplines, each experimenting with participatory and collaborative forms of inquiry. Rather than prescribing what engagement should be, it investigates how it happens: the sparks that ignite it, the frictions that sustain or destabilise it, and the material and institutional conditions that make it possible or constrain it. Research projects are described through open-ended trajectories, negotiated in the heat of genuine encounters between institutions, publics, and material infrastructures. Born from an international meeting held at the University of Paris Nanterre in September 2023, this collective work extends a shared effort to think through the trajectories of engagement that characterise today’s research landscape. Combining conceptual reflection with diagrammatic elicitation methodologies, it maps how researchers and non-academic actors move, connect, and transform one another throughout the research process. At once analytical and experimental, this volume invites readers to question the forms, ethics, and politics of participation. Rather than approaching engagement as a fixed model or moral ideal, it proposes reframing it as a dynamic, situated practice

No full textInternational audienceL'ouvrage réunit un ensemble de travaux consacrés aux discours et aux langues d'Amazonie et du monde maya, rédigés par des spécialistes de renommée internationale. Les analyses abordent des thématiques phares de l'anthropologie linguistique, à partir d'études de cas issues d'enquêtes de terrain ou d'archives. Des aspects structurels de certaines langues amérindiennes – portant notamment sur l'espace, le temps ou l'agentivité – sont examinés dans une approche discursive et pragmatique. Différentes formes orales, en particulier celles de registres rituels, mais aussi mythiques ou conversationnels, sont étudiées tant pour leurs qualités poétiques que pour leurs modes spécifiques de significations et d'efficacité. La polyphonie énonciative ainsi que l'intertextualité de ces paroles sont mises en lumière, de même que les usages de la vocalité, de la gestualité et d'autres modes co-expressifs de la communication. L'ouvrage met en valeur les paroles étudiées dans leur langue originale et s'interroge, dans une perspective réflexive à la fois contemporaine et historique, sur les révélations et effets produits par la traduction de langues si éloignées des nôtres. Le livre est dédié à Aurore Monod Becquelin, américaniste et ethnolinguiste dont les contributions essentielles aux différents domaines abordés constituent une source d'inspiration pour les auteurs. L'introduction et le chapitre final offrent une présentation historique inédite du parcours de cette chercheuse et du champ des études qu'elle a largement contribué à fonder et à animer en France, en dialogue constant, depuis plus de cinquante ans, avec ses terrains et ses collègues du proche et du lointain
