Maritime traffic specialization and environmental health impacts in European port cities
No full textThis paper investigates the influence of multiple vessel traffics on air pollution and public health in European port cities. A sample of 120 Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) is analysed over the period 2000-2019, confronting container, cruise, liquid bulk, and solid bulk traffic with environmental (emissions of CO², PM2.5, NO²), public health (life expectancy, mortality rate), and socio-economic features like population density and GDP per inhabitant. Results from the fixed effects model show that population density is the major cause of all pollutions, followed by GDP and solid bulks, while life expectancy and mortality are mainly influenced by the nature of the local socio-economic environment (population density, age, GDP, bed rates, educational level). This is complemented by a factor analysis and a hierarchical clustering, which reveal the existence of three types of port cities: critical, tourism, and metropolitan. The typology of port cities is further discussed based on ground observation in particular sites
Consonant-Vowel division
No full textInternational audienceAll theories assume that phonological inventories are made of consonants on the one hand and vowels on the other, yet the division between these two sets is not straightforward: to wit, neither consonants nor vowels are regarded as phonological primes. In addition, independently of their phonetics, consonants and vowels behave differently in phonology. It is well-known that some consonants may pattern with vowels and are therefore usually referred to as syllabic consonants, whereas some vowels (glides) display the opposite behaviour, i.e. they pattern with consonants when adjacent to vowels. Phonological theories adopt a range of formal solutions to capture the distribution of consonants and vowels, spanning from features such as [consonantal], [vocalic], or [syllabic] to the use of distinct autosegmental slots such as O(nset) or C(onsonant) on the one hand, and N(ucleus) or V(owel) on the other. It is argued here that such a view, in which consonants and vowels are distinguished by positional properties, is the most adequate in explaining phonological patterns
Comic strips in Buddhist temples? Narratives of Śākyamuni Buddha in Kinnauri temples (western Indian Himalayas)
No full textInternational audienceKinnaur, a historical passageway between India and Tibet, forms the eastern part of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In this Himalayan region, Hinduism and Buddhism have been inextricably intertwined since at least the 10th century. Many people follow both religions, and it is common to find a Hindu temple and a Buddhist temple in the same compound, facing each other and built according to the same architectural rules. The arrival of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala has led to a significant influx of Tibetan refugees into Himachal Pradesh, contributing to a revival of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. In Kinnaur, many stupas have been built and Buddhist temples renovated or completely rebuilt in the last few decades. This paper will examine recent paintings depicting the life of the Buddha that adorn the walls of some of these newly renovated temples and question their sources of inspiration. While there are similarities in terms of arrangement in registers and the presence of inscriptions providing information about the scenes painted, these paintings differ from the wall paintings of western Tibet in terms of aesthetics and style. However, the main focus of this study is the choice of episodes and the manner in which they are depicted. For instance, the birth and youth of the future Buddha are depicted without reference to the sage Aśita's prediction or the various tournaments in which the young prince participated, such as the archery, wrestling, and swimming contests. In contrast, the paintings include episodes that are rarely seen in Tibetan temples, such as the episode of the goose wounded by his cousin Devadatta, which is generally omitted in favour of the episode of the white elephant killed in a fit of jealousy. No full textInternational audienceCe poster présente l’avancée de mes travaux de thèse au début de la troisième année, consacrés à l’étude du passage à la majorité des jeunes de Mayotte. Il montre le cheminement actualisé de ma démarche de recherche, de mes questions exploratoires à mes enquêtes de terrain, achevées au printemps 2025. La version rédigée de ce poster sert de base pour écrire les premiers chapitres de ma thèse.Les jeunes de Mayotte sont confrontés à de multiples difficultés, à commencer par d’importants problèmes de scolarisation (Mathon-Cécillon et Séraphin, 2023). Le contexte institutionnel mouvant de l’île est propice aux dispositions législatives dérogatoires (Carayol, 2024), qui renforcent une situation d’« exception néfaste » (Fondacci, 2025). Les reconfigurations institutionnelles issues de la départementalisation du territoire rendent visibles les souffrances des mineurs non accompagnés (Lemercier, 2019), dans une société dont l’organisation traditionnelle est centrée sur l’appartenance forte au concept mahorais de dago, c’est-à-dire à la communauté villageoise (Blanchy, 2012). Le passage à la majorité y constitue une étape particulièrement complexe (Temporal, 2023), quelle que soit la trajectoire de vie et la situation des jeunes à cet âge.À travers une analyse de la dotation en capitaux économique, social et culturel, complétée par la proposition d’un « capital citoyen », reflétant l’expérience et l’usage des institutions, je cherche dans cette thèse à montrer comment les jeunes de Mayotte se représentent à l’âge de 18 ans, et comment iels se projettent dans leur majorité.Une particularité de mes deux phases de terrain est qu’elles se situent avant (enquête par questionnaire) et après le passage du cyclone Chido (enquête par entretiens), qui a durement frappé Mayotte en décembre 2024. L’analyse des conséquences de cet évènement dans les discours des jeunes révèle des manières d’y répondre différentes, et in fine, des situations de vie aux antipodes selon les catégories de population étudiées
